A Call to Repentance (Joel 1:13–20; Amos 5:4–15; Zephaniah 2:1–3)
UEB Jesus answered and said to them, "Do you think that these Galileans were more sinful than all the other Galileans because they suffered in this way? BSB BSB: To this He replied, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered this way?
UEB No, I tell you. But if you do not repent, all of you will perish in the same way. BSB BSB: No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish.
UEB Or those eighteen people in Siloam on whom a tower fell and killed them, do you think they were worse sinners than other men in Jerusalem? BSB BSB: Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam collapsed on them: Do you think that they were more sinful than all the others living in Jerusalem?
UEB No, I say. But if you do not repent, all of you will also perish." BSB BSB: No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”
The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree (Isaiah 5:1–7)
UEB The man said to the gardener, 'Look, for three years I came and tried to find fruit on this fig tree and found none. Cut it down. Why let it waste the ground?' BSB BSB: So he said to the keeper of the vineyard, ‘Look, for the past three years I have come to search for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Therefore cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’
UEB The gardener answered and said, 'Leave it alone this year while I dig around it and put manure on it. BSB BSB: ‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone again this year, until I dig around it and fertilize it.
UEB If it bears fruit next year, good; but if it does not, cut it down!'" BSB BSB: If it bears fruit next year, fine. But if not, you can cut it down.’”
Jesus Heals a Disabled Woman 10 UEB Now Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues during the Sabbath. BSB BSB: One Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,
UEB Behold, a woman was there who for eighteen years had a spirit of weakness. She was bent over and was not able to straighten up completely. BSB BSB: and a woman there had been disabled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was hunched over and could not stand up straight.
UEB When Jesus saw her, he called to her and said, "Woman, you are freed from your weakness." BSB BSB: When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your disability.”
UEB He placed his hands on her, and immediately she was straightened up and she glorified God. BSB BSB: Then He placed His hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and began to glorify God.
UEB But the synagogue ruler was indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath. So the ruler answered and said to the crowd, "There are six days in which it is necessary to work. Come and be healed then, not on the Sabbath day." BSB BSB: But the synagogue leader was indignant that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath. “There are six days for work,” he told the crowd. “So come and be healed on those days and not on the Sabbath.”
UEB The Lord answered him and said, "Hypocrites! Does not each of you untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead it to drink on the Sabbath? BSB BSB: “You hypocrites!” the Lord replied. “Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it to water?
UEB So too this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, should her bonds not be untied on the Sabbath day?" BSB BSB: Then should not this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be released from her bondage on the Sabbath day?”
UEB As he said these things, all those who opposed him were ashamed, but the whole crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things he did. BSB BSB: When Jesus said this, all His adversaries were humiliated. And the whole crowd rejoiced at all the glorious things He was doing.
The Parable of the Mustard Seed (Matthew 13:31–32; Mark 4:30–34)
UEB Then Jesus said, "What is the kingdom of God like, and what can I compare it to? BSB BSB: Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? To what can I compare it?
UEB It is like a mustard seed that a man took and threw into his garden, and it grew into a big tree, and the birds of heaven built their nests in its branches." BSB BSB: It is like a mustard seed that a man tossed into his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.”
The Parable of the Leaven (Matthew 13:33)
UEB Again he said, "To what can I compare the kingdom of God? BSB BSB: Again He asked, “To what can I compare the kingdom of God?
UEB It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of flour until it spread through all the flour." BSB BSB: It is like leaven that a woman took and mixed into three measures of flour, until all of it was leavened.”
The Narrow Door (Matthew 7:13–14)
UEB Then Jesus traveled through the towns and villages, teaching and making his way toward Jerusalem. BSB BSB: Then Jesus traveled throughout the towns and villages, teaching as He made His way toward Jerusalem.
UEB Someone said to him, "Lord, are only a few people to be saved?" So he said to them, BSB BSB: “Lord,” someone asked Him, “will only a few people be saved?” Jesus answered,
UEB "Struggle to enter through the narrow door, because, I say to you, many will want to enter, but will not be able to enter. BSB BSB: “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able.
UEB Once the owner of the house gets up and locks the door, then you will stand outside and pound the door and say, 'Lord, Lord, let us in.' He will answer and say to you, 'I do not know you or where you are from.' BSB BSB: After the master of the house gets up and shuts the door, you will stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ But he will reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’
UEB Then you will say, 'We ate and drank in front of you and you taught in our streets.' BSB BSB: Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’
UEB But he will reply, 'I say to you, I do not know where you are from. Get away from me, you evildoers!' BSB BSB: And he will answer, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers.’
UEB There will be crying and the grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in God's kingdom, but you are thrown out. BSB BSB: There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves are thrown out.
UEB They will come from the east, west, north, and south, and be seated at a table in the kingdom of God. BSB BSB: People will come from east and west and north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God.
UEB Know this, those who are least important will be first, and those who are most important will be last." BSB BSB: And indeed, some who are last will be first, and some who are first will be last.”
Lament over Jerusalem (Matthew 23:37–39)

UEB Jesus said, "Go and tell that fox, 'Look, I cast out demons and perform healings today and tomorrow, and the third day I will reach my goal.' BSB BSB: But Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘Look, I will keep driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach My goal.’
UEB In any case, it is necessary for me to continue on today, tomorrow, and the following day, since it is not acceptable to kill a prophet away from Jerusalem. BSB BSB: Nevertheless, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day, for it is not admissible for a prophet to perish outside of Jerusalem.
UEB Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those sent to you. How often I desired to gather your children the way a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you did not desire this. BSB BSB: O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those sent to her, how often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling!
UEB See, your house is abandoned. I say to you, you will not see me until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'" BSB BSB: Look, your house is left to you desolate. And I tell you that you will not see Me again until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
