The Parable of the Wicked Tenants (Matthew 21:33–46; Luke 20:9–18)
UEB Then Jesus began to teach them in parables. He said, "A man planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, and dug a pit for a winepress. He built a watchtower and then leased the vineyard to vine growers. Then he went away on a journey. BSB BSB: Then Jesus began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a wine vat, and built a watchtower. Then he rented it out to some tenants and went away on a journey.
UEB At the right time, he sent a servant to the vine growers to receive from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. BSB BSB: At harvest time, he sent a servant to the tenants to collect his share of the fruit of the vineyard.
UEB But they took him, beat him, and sent him away with nothing. BSB BSB: But they seized the servant, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.
UEB Again he sent to them another servant, and they wounded him in the head and treated him shamefully. BSB BSB: Then he sent them another servant, and they struck him over the head and treated him shamefully.
UEB He sent yet another, and this one they killed. They treated many others in the same way, beating some and killing others. BSB BSB: He sent still another, and this one they killed. He sent many others; some they beat and others they killed.
UEB He had still one more person to send, a beloved son. He was the last one he sent to them. He said, 'They will respect my son.' BSB BSB: Finally, having one beloved son, he sent him to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said.
UEB But the vine growers said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.' BSB BSB: But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’
UEB They seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. BSB BSB: So they seized the son, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
UEB Therefore, what will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the vine growers and will give the vineyard to others. BSB BSB: What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.
UEB Have you not read this scripture? 'The stone which the builders rejected has been made the cornerstone. BSB BSB: Have you never read this Scripture: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
UEB This was from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes.'" BSB BSB: This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”
UEB They sought to arrest Jesus, but they feared the crowd, for they knew that he had spoken this parable against them. So they left him and went away. BSB BSB: At this, the leaders sought to arrest Jesus, for they knew that He had spoken this parable against them. But fearing the crowd, they left Him and went away.
Paying Taxes to Caesar (Matthew 22:15–22; Luke 20:19–26)
UEB Then they sent some of the Pharisees and the Herodians to him to trap him with words. BSB BSB: Later, they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to catch Jesus in His words.
UEB When they came, they said to him, "Teacher, we know that you care for no one's opinion, and you do not show partiality between people. You truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay or not?" BSB BSB: “Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are honest and seek favor from no one. Indeed, You are impartial and teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay them or not?”
UEB But Jesus knew their hypocrisy and said to them, "Why do you test me? Bring me a denarius so I can look at it." BSB BSB: But Jesus saw through their hypocrisy and said, “Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius to inspect.”
UEB They brought one to Jesus. He said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" They said, "Caesar's." BSB BSB: So they brought it, and He asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they answered.
UEB Jesus said, "Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." They marveled at him. BSB BSB: Then Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” And they marveled at Him.
The Sadducees and the Resurrection (Matthew 22:23–33; Luke 20:27–40)
UEB Then Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him. They asked him, saying, BSB BSB: Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and questioned Him:
UEB "Teacher, Moses wrote for us, 'If a man's brother dies and leaves a wife behind him, but no child, the man should take the brother's wife, and raise up a descendant for his brother.' BSB BSB: “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man is to marry his brother’s widow and raise up offspring for him.
UEB There were seven brothers; the first took a wife and then died, leaving no children. BSB BSB: Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died, leaving no children.
UEB Then the second took her and died, leaving no children, and the third likewise. BSB BSB: Then the second one married the widow, but he also died and left no children. And the third did likewise.
UEB The seven left no children. Last of all, the woman also died. BSB BSB: In this way, none of the seven left any children. And last of all, the woman died.
UEB In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For all seven brothers had her as their wife." BSB BSB: In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be? For all seven were married to her.”
UEB Jesus said, "Is this not the reason you are mistaken, because you do not know the scriptures nor the power of God? BSB BSB: Jesus said to them, “Aren’t you mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?
UEB For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but they are like angels in heaven. BSB BSB: When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven.
UEB He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are quite mistaken." BSB BSB: He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!”
The Greatest Commandment (Deuteronomy 6:1–19; Matthew 22:34–40)
UEB You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' BSB BSB: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
UEB The second commandment is this, 'You must love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other greater commandment than these." BSB BSB: The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”
UEB The scribe said, "Good, Teacher! You have truly said that God is one, and that there is no other besides him. BSB BSB: “Right, Teacher,” the scribe replied. “You have stated correctly that God is One and there is no other but Him,
UEB To love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is even more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices." BSB BSB: and to love Him with all your heart and with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself. This is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
UEB When Jesus saw that he had given a wise answer, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." After that, no one dared to ask Jesus any more questions. BSB BSB: When Jesus saw that the man had answered wisely, He said, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And no one dared to question Him any further.
Whose Son Is the Christ? (Matthew 22:41–46; Luke 20:41–44)
UEB While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he said, "How is it that the scribes say the Christ is the son of David? BSB BSB: While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, He asked, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David?
UEB David himself, in the Holy Spirit, said, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool."' BSB BSB: Speaking by the Holy Spirit, David himself declared: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet.”’
UEB David himself calls him 'Lord,' so how can the Christ be David's son?" The large crowd gladly listened to him. BSB BSB: David himself calls Him ‘Lord.’ So how can He be David’s son?” And the large crowd listened to Him with delight.
Beware of the Scribes (Luke 20:45–47)
UEB In his teaching Jesus said, "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk in long robes and they like the greetings they receive in the marketplaces BSB BSB: In His teaching Jesus also said, “Watch out for the scribes. They like to walk around in long robes, to receive greetings in the marketplaces,
UEB and they like to have the chief seats in the synagogues and chief places at feasts. BSB BSB: and to have the chief seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
UEB They also devour widows' houses, and they pray long prayers for people to see. These men will receive greater condemnation." BSB BSB: They defraud widows of their houses, and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will receive greater condemnation.”
The Widow’s Offering (Luke 21:1–4)
UEB Then Jesus sat down across from an offering box in the temple area; he was watching people as they dropped their money into the box. Many rich people put in large amounts of money. BSB BSB: As Jesus was sitting opposite the treasury, He watched the crowd putting money into it. And many rich people put in large amounts.
UEB Then a poor widow came and put in two mites, worth about a penny. BSB BSB: Then one poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amounted to a small fraction of a denarius.
UEB He called his disciples and said to them, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them who contributed to the offering box. BSB BSB: Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more than all the others into the treasury.
UEB For all of them gave out of their abundance. But this widow, out of her poverty, put in all of the money which she had to live on." BSB BSB: For they all contributed out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”
