Jesus Heals a Paralytic (Matthew 9:1–8; Luke 5:17–26)
UEB So many gathered there that there was no more space, not even at the door, and Jesus spoke the word to them. BSB BSB: they gathered in such large numbers that there was no more room, not even outside the door, as Jesus spoke the word to them.
UEB Then some men came to him who were bringing a paralyzed man; four people were carrying him. BSB BSB: Then a paralytic was brought to Him, carried by four men.
UEB When they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof that was above Jesus, and after they made an opening, they lowered the bed the paralyzed man was lying on. BSB BSB: Since they were unable to get to Jesus through the crowd, they uncovered the roof above Him, made an opening, and lowered the paralytic on his mat.
UEB Now some of the scribes were sitting there, and they reasoned in their hearts, BSB BSB: But some of the scribes were sitting there and thinking in their hearts,
UEB "How can this man speak this way? He blasphemes! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" BSB BSB: “Why does this man speak like this? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
UEB Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit what they were thinking among themselves. He said to them, "Why are you thinking this in your hearts? BSB BSB: At once Jesus knew in His spirit that they were thinking this way within themselves. “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?” He asked.
UEB What is easier to say to the paralyzed man, 'Your sins are forgiven' or to say 'Get up, take up your bed, and walk'? BSB BSB: “Which is easier: to say to a paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk’?
UEB But in order that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins," he said to the paralytic, BSB BSB: But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...” He said to the paralytic,
UEB He got up and immediately took up the mat, and went out of the house in front of everyone, so that they were all amazed and they gave glory to God, and they said, "We never saw anything like this." BSB BSB: And immediately the man got up, picked up his mat, and walked out in front of them all. As a result, they were all astounded and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
Jesus Calls Levi (Matthew 9:9–13; Luke 5:27–32)
UEB He went out again by the lake, and all the crowd came to him, and he taught them. BSB BSB: Once again Jesus went out beside the sea. All the people came to Him, and He taught them there.
UEB As he passed by, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector's tent and he said to him, "Follow me." He got up and followed him. BSB BSB: As He was walking along, He saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him, and Levi got up and followed Him.
UEB Jesus was having a meal in Levi's house and many tax collectors and sinful people were dining with him and his disciples, for there were many and they followed him. BSB BSB: While Jesus was dining at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Him and His disciples—for there were many who followed Him.
UEB When the scribes, who were Pharisees, saw that Jesus was eating with the sinful people and tax collectors, they said to his disciples, "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinful people?" BSB BSB: When the scribes who were Pharisees saw Jesus eating with these people, they asked His disciples, “Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
Questions about Fasting (Matthew 9:14–15; Luke 5:33–35)
UEB Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and said to him, "Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?" BSB BSB: Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were often fasting. So people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t Your disciples fast like John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees?”
UEB Jesus said to them, "Can the wedding attendants fast while the bridegroom is still with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with them? As long as He is with them, they cannot fast.
UEB But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and in those days, they will fast. BSB BSB: But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.
The Patches and the Wineskins (Matthew 9:16–17; Luke 5:36–39)
UEB No man sews a piece of new cloth on an old garment, otherwise the patch will tear away from it, the new from the old, and there will be a worse tear. BSB BSB: No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the new piece will pull away from the old, and a worse tear will result.
UEB No man puts new wine into old wineskins, otherwise the wine will burst the skins and both the wine and the wineskins will be lost. Instead, put new wine into fresh wineskins." BSB BSB: And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins.”
The Lord of the Sabbath (1 Samuel 21:1–7; Matthew 12:1–8; Luke 6:1–5)
UEB The Pharisees said to him, "Look, why are they doing something that is not lawful on the Sabbath day?" BSB BSB: So the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
UEB how he went into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the presence, which it is unlawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he even gave some to those who were with him?" BSB BSB: During the high priesthood of Abiathar, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which was lawful only for the priests. And he gave some to his companions as well.”
UEB Jesus said, "The Sabbath was made for mankind, not mankind for the Sabbath. BSB BSB: Then Jesus declared, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
UEB Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord, even of the Sabbath." BSB BSB: Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
