The Demons and the Pigs (Matthew 8:28–34; Luke 8:26–39)
UEB They came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes. BSB BSB: On the other side of the sea, they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes.
UEB When Jesus was getting out of the boat, immediately there came up to him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. BSB BSB: As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, He was met by a man with an unclean spirit, who was coming from the tombs.
UEB The man lived in the tombs. No one could restrain him anymore, not even with a chain. BSB BSB: This man had been living in the tombs and could no longer be restrained, even with chains.
UEB He had been bound many times with shackles and with chains. He tore the chains apart and his shackles were shattered. No one had the strength to subdue him. BSB BSB: Though he was often bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and shattered the shackles. Now there was no one with the strength to subdue him.
UEB Every night and day in the tombs and in the mountains, he cried out and cut himself with sharp stones. BSB BSB: Night and day in the tombs and in the mountains he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones.
UEB When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran to him and bowed down before him. BSB BSB: When the man saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him.
UEB He cried out with a loud voice, "What do I have to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you by God himself, do not torment me." BSB BSB: And he shouted in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God not to torture me!”
UEB For he had been saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit." BSB BSB: For Jesus had already declared, “Come out of this man, you unclean spirit!”
UEB He asked him, "What is your name?" He answered him, "My name is Legion, for we are many." BSB BSB: “What is your name?” Jesus asked. “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”
UEB He begged him again and again not to send them out of the region. BSB BSB: And he begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of that region.
UEB Now a great herd of pigs was there feeding on the hill, BSB BSB: There on the nearby hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding.
UEB and they begged him, saying, "Send us into the pigs; let us enter into them." BSB BSB: So the demons begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.”
UEB So he allowed them; the unclean spirits came out and entered into the pigs, and they rushed down the steep hill into the sea, and about two thousand pigs drowned in the sea. BSB BSB: He gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the water.
UEB Then those who were feeding the pigs ran away and reported what had happened in the city and in the countryside, and so people went out to see what had happened. BSB BSB: Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
UEB Then they came to Jesus and they saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had been possessed by Legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. BSB BSB: When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
UEB Those who had seen what happened to the demon-possessed man told them about it in detail, and they also them told about the pigs. BSB BSB: Those who had seen it described what had happened to the demon-possessed man and also to the pigs.
UEB Then they started to beg him to leave their region. BSB BSB: And the people began to beg Jesus to leave their region.
UEB When he was getting into the boat, the demon-possessed man begged him that he might be with him. BSB BSB: As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by the demons begged to go with Him.
UEB But Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, "Go to your house and to your people and tell them what the Lord has done for you, and how he has shown you mercy." BSB BSB: But Jesus would not allow him. “Go home to your own people,” He said, “and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy He has shown you.”
UEB So he went away and began to proclaim the great things that Jesus had done for him in the Decapolis, and everyone was amazed. BSB BSB: So the man went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And everyone was amazed.
The Healing Touch of Jesus (Matthew 9:18–26; Luke 8:40–56)
UEB Now when Jesus had crossed over again to the other side, in the boat, a great crowd gathered around him, as he was beside the sea. BSB BSB: When Jesus had again crossed by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him beside the sea.
UEB Then one of the leaders of the synagogue, named Jairus, came, and when he saw him, fell at his feet. BSB BSB: A synagogue leader named Jairus arrived, and seeing Jesus, he fell at His feet
UEB He begged again and again, saying, "My little daughter is near death. I beg you, come and lay your hands on her that she may be made well and live." BSB BSB: and pleaded with Him urgently, “My little daughter is near death. Please come and place Your hands on her, so that she will be healed and live.”
UEB So he went with him, and a great crowd followed him and pressed close around him. BSB BSB: So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around Him.
UEB Now a woman was there who had a flow of blood for twelve years. BSB BSB: And a woman was there who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years.
UEB She had suffered much from many doctors and had spent everything that she had, but instead of getting better she grew worse. BSB BSB: She had borne much agony under the care of many physicians and had spent all she had, but to no avail. Instead, her condition had only grown worse.
UEB For she said, "If I touch just his clothes, I will be healed." BSB BSB: For she kept saying, “If only I touch His garments, I will be healed.”
UEB When she touched him, the bleeding stopped, and she felt in her body that she was healed from her affliction. BSB BSB: Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction.
UEB Jesus immediately realized in himself that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched my clothes?" BSB BSB: At once Jesus was aware that power had gone out from Him. Turning to the crowd, He asked, “Who touched My garments?”
UEB His disciples said to him, "You see this crowd pressed around you, and you say, 'Who touched me?'" BSB BSB: His disciples answered, “You can see the crowd pressing in on You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me?’”
UEB But Jesus looked around to see who had done it. BSB BSB: But He kept looking around to see who had done this.
UEB The woman, knowing what had happened to her, feared and trembled. She came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. BSB BSB: Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him trembling in fear, and she told Him the whole truth.
UEB He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be healed from your disease." BSB BSB: “Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction.”
UEB While he was speaking, some people came from the leader of the synagogue, saying, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any longer?" BSB BSB: While He was still speaking, messengers from the house of Jairus arrived and said, “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore?”
UEB But when Jesus overheard what they said, he said to the leader of the synagogue, "Do not be afraid. Just believe." BSB BSB: But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe.”
UEB He did not permit anyone to accompany him, except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. BSB BSB: And He did not allow anyone to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.
UEB They came to the house of the leader of the synagogue and he saw there people making a lot of noise; they were weeping and wailing loudly. BSB BSB: When they arrived at the house of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw the commotion and the people weeping and wailing loudly.
UEB When he entered the house, he said to them, "Why are you upset and why do you weep? The child is not dead but sleeps." BSB BSB: He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but asleep.”
UEB They laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the father of the child and the mother and those who were with him, and he went in where the child was. BSB BSB: And they laughed at Him. After He had put them all outside, He took the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and went in to see the child.
UEB He took the hand of the child and said to her, "Talitha, koum!" which being translated would be, "Little girl, I say to you, get up." BSB BSB: Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!” 42 UEB Immediately the child got up and walked (for she was twelve years of age). They were immediately astonished with overwhelming amazement. BSB BSB: Immediately the girl got up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). And at once they were utterly astounded.
UEB He strictly ordered them that no one should know about this. Then he told them to give her something to eat. BSB BSB: Then Jesus gave strict orders that no one should know about this, and He told them to give her something to eat.
