The Ministry of the Twelve (Mark 6:7–13; Luke 9:1–6)
UEB Go instead to the lost sheep of the house of Israel; BSB BSB: Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.
UEB and as you go, preach and say, 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.' BSB BSB: As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’
UEB Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, and cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. BSB BSB: Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.
UEB Do not carry any gold, silver, or copper in your purses. BSB BSB: Do not take along any gold or silver or copper in your belts.
UEB Do not take a traveling bag for your journey, or an extra tunic, or sandals, or a staff, for a laborer deserves his food. BSB BSB: Take no bag for the road, or second tunic, or sandals, or staff; for the worker is worthy of his provisions.
UEB Whatever city or village you enter, find who is worthy in it, and stay there until you leave. BSB BSB: Whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy there and stay at his house until you move on.
UEB As you enter into the house, greet it. BSB BSB: As you enter the home, greet its occupants.
UEB If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it is not worthy, let your peace come back to you. BSB BSB: If the home is worthy, let your peace rest on it, but if it is not, let your peace return to you.
UEB As for those who do not receive you or listen to your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet. BSB BSB: And if anyone will not welcome you or heed your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town.
UEB Truly I say to you, it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city. BSB BSB: Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.
Sheep among Wolves (2 Timothy 1:3–12)
UEB See, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be as wise as serpents and harmless as doves. BSB BSB: Behold, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
UEB Watch out for people! They will deliver you up to councils, and they will whip you in their synagogues. BSB BSB: But beware of men, for they will hand you over to their councils and flog you in their synagogues.
UEB Then you will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. BSB BSB: On My account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.
UEB When they deliver you up, do not be anxious about how or what you will speak, for what to say will be given to you in that hour. BSB BSB: But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to respond or what to say. In that hour you will be given what to say.
UEB For it is not you who will speak, but the Spirit of your Father who will speak in you. BSB BSB: For it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
UEB Brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against their parents and cause them to be put to death. BSB BSB: Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rise against their parents and have them put to death.
UEB You will be hated by everyone because of my name. But whoever endures to the end, that person will be saved. BSB BSB: You will be hated by everyone because of My name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
UEB When they persecute you in this city, flee to the next, for truly I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man has come. BSB BSB: When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next. Truly I tell you, you will not reach all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
UEB A disciple is not greater than his teacher, nor a servant above his master. BSB BSB: A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.
UEB It is enough for the disciple that he should be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much worse would be the names they call the members of his household! BSB BSB: It is enough for a disciple to be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!
Fear God Alone (Luke 12:4–7)
UEB Therefore do not fear them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, and nothing hidden that will not be known. BSB BSB: So do not be afraid of them. For there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, and nothing hidden that will not be made known.
UEB What I tell you in the darkness, say in the daylight, and what you hear softly in your ear, proclaim upon the housetops. BSB BSB: What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops.
UEB But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. BSB BSB: And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
UEB Do not fear. You are more valuable than many sparrows. BSB BSB: So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Confessing Christ (Luke 12:8–12)
UEB But he who denies me before men, I will also deny before my Father who is in heaven. BSB BSB: But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father in heaven.
Not Peace but a Sword (Micah 7:1–6; Luke 12:49–53)
UEB For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. BSB BSB: For I have come to turn ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
UEB A man's enemies will be those of his own household. BSB BSB: A man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’
UEB He who finds his life will lose it. But he who loses his life for my sake will find it. BSB BSB: Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
The Reward of Service (2 Kings 4:8–17)
UEB He who welcomes you welcomes me, and he who welcomes me also welcomes him who sent me. BSB BSB: He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives the One who sent Me.
UEB He who welcomes a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and he who welcomes a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward. BSB BSB: Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward.
UEB Whoever gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink because he is a disciple, truly I say to you, he will in no way lose his reward." BSB BSB: And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is My disciple, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.”
