The Tradition of the Elders (Mark 7:1–13)
UEB Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem. They said, BSB BSB: Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,
UEB "Why do your disciples violate the traditions of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat." BSB BSB: “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They do not wash their hands before they eat.”
UEB He answered and said to them, "Then why do you violate the commandment of God for the sake of your traditions? BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?
UEB For God said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'He who speaks evil of his father or mother, will surely die.' BSB BSB: For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’
UEB But you say, 'Whoever says to his father or mother "Whatever help you would have received from me is now a gift given to God,"' BSB BSB: But you say that if anyone says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would have received from me is a gift devoted to God,’
UEB that person does not need to honor his father. In this way you have made void the word of God for the sake of your traditions. BSB BSB: he need not honor his father or mother with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
UEB You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you when he said, BSB BSB: You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you:
UEB They worship me in vain, because they teach as their doctrines the commandments of people.'" BSB BSB: They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men.’”
What Defiles a Man (Mark 7:14–23)
UEB Then he called the crowd to himself and said to them, "Listen and understand— BSB BSB: Jesus called the crowd to Him and said, “Listen and understand.
UEB Nothing that enters into the mouth defiles a person. Instead, what comes out of the mouth, this is what defiles a person." BSB BSB: A man is not defiled by what enters his mouth, but by what comes out of it.”
UEB Then the disciples came and said to Jesus, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?" BSB BSB: Then the disciples came to Him and said, “Are You aware that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”
UEB Jesus answered and said, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. BSB BSB: But Jesus replied, “Every plant that My heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by its roots.
UEB Let them alone, they are blind guides. If a blind person guides another blind person, both will fall into a pit." BSB BSB: Disregard them! They are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”
UEB Peter responded and said to Jesus, "Explain this parable to us." BSB BSB: Peter said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”
UEB Jesus said, "Are you also still without understanding? BSB BSB: “Do you still not understand?” Jesus asked.
UEB Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is then passed out into the latrine? BSB BSB: “Do you not yet realize that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then is eliminated?
UEB But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart. They are the things that defile a person. BSB BSB: But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a man.
UEB For from the heart proceed evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, and slander. BSB BSB: For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander.
UEB These are the things that defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a person." BSB BSB: These are what defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile him.”
The Faith of the Canaanite Woman (Mark 7:24–30)
UEB Behold, a Canaanite woman came out from that region. She shouted out and said, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed." BSB BSB: And a Canaanite woman from that region came to Him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is miserably possessed by a demon.”
UEB But she came and bowed down before him, saying, "Lord, help me." BSB BSB: The woman came and knelt before Him. “Lord, help me!” she said.
UEB He answered and said, "It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs." BSB BSB: But Jesus replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
UEB She said, "Yes, Lord, but even the little dogs eat some of the crumbs that fall from their masters' tables." BSB BSB: “Yes, Lord,” she said, “even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
The Feeding of the Four Thousand (2 Kings 4:42–44; Mark 8:1–10)
UEB Jesus left that place and went near to the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up a hill and sat there. BSB BSB: Moving on from there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee. Then He went up on a mountain and sat down.
UEB Large crowds came to him. They brought with them lame, blind, mute, and crippled people, and many others who were sick. They presented them at Jesus' feet, and he healed them. BSB BSB: Large crowds came to Him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and laid them at His feet, and He healed them.
UEB So the crowd marveled when they saw the mute persons speak, the crippled made well, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. They praised the God of Israel. BSB BSB: The crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.
UEB Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion on the crowd, because they have stayed with me for three days already and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away without eating, or they may faint on the way." BSB BSB: Then Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “I have compassion for this crowd, because they have already been with Me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may faint along the way.”
UEB The disciples said to him, "Where can we get enough loaves of bread in such a deserted place to satisfy so large a crowd?" BSB BSB: The disciples replied, “Where in this desolate place could we find enough bread to feed such a large crowd?”
UEB Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" They said, "Seven, and a few small fish." BSB BSB: “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”
UEB Then Jesus commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. BSB BSB: And He instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground.
UEB He took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks, he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples. The disciples gave them to the crowd. BSB BSB: Taking the seven loaves and the fish, He gave thanks and broke them. Then He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
UEB The people all ate and were satisfied. Then they gathered up seven baskets full of the broken pieces that were left over. BSB BSB: They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
UEB Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. BSB BSB: A total of four thousand men were fed, besides women and children.
UEB Then Jesus sent the crowds away and got into the boat and went into the region of Magadan. BSB BSB: After Jesus had dismissed the crowds, He got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.
