The Parable of the Ten Virgins 1 UEB Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. BSB BSB: “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
UEB Five of them were foolish and five were wise. BSB BSB: Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.
UEB For when the foolish virgins took their lamps, they did not take any oil with them. BSB BSB: The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take along any extra oil.
UEB But the wise virgins took containers of oil along with their lamps. BSB BSB: But the wise ones took oil in flasks along with their lamps.
UEB Now while the bridegroom was delayed, they all got sleepy and slept. BSB BSB: When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
UEB But at midnight there was a cry, 'Look, the bridegroom! Go out and meet him.' BSB BSB: At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
UEB Then all those virgins rose up and trimmed their lamps. BSB BSB: Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.
UEB The foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil because our lamps are going out.' BSB BSB: The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’
UEB But the wise answered and said, 'Since there will not be enough for us and you, go instead to those who sell and buy some for yourselves.' BSB BSB: ‘No,’ said the wise ones, ‘or there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
UEB While they went away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. BSB BSB: But while they were on their way to buy it, the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut.
UEB Afterward the other virgins also came and said, 'Master, master, open for us.' BSB BSB: Later the other virgins arrived and said, ‘Lord, lord, open the door for us!’
UEB But he answered and said, 'Truly I say to you, I do not know you.' BSB BSB: But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’
UEB Watch therefore, for you do not know the day or the hour. BSB BSB: Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
The Parable of the Talents (Luke 19:11–27)
UEB For it is like when a man was about to go into another country. He called his own servants and gave over to them his wealth. BSB BSB: For it is just like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted them with his possessions.
UEB To one of them he gave five talents, to another he gave two, and to yet another he gave one talent. Each one received an amount according to his own ability, and that man went on his journey. BSB BSB: To one he gave five talents, to another two talents, and to another one talent—each according to his own ability. And he went on his journey.
UEB The one who received the five talents went at once and invested them and made another five talents. BSB BSB: The servant who had received the five talents went at once and put them to work and gained five more.
UEB Likewise the one who had received two talents made another two. BSB BSB: Likewise, the one with the two talents gained two more.
UEB But the servant who had received one talent went away, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master's money. BSB BSB: But the servant who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master’s money.
UEB Now after a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. BSB BSB: After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.
UEB The servant who had received the five talents came and brought another five talents. He said, 'Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five talents more.' BSB BSB: The servant who had received the five talents came and presented five more. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’
UEB His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful over a few things. I will put you in charge over many things. Enter into the joy of your master.' BSB BSB: His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master!’
UEB The servant who had received two talents came and said, 'Master, you gave me two talents. See, I have made two more talents.' BSB BSB: The servant who had received the two talents also came and said, ‘Master, you entrusted me with two talents. See, I have gained two more.’
UEB Then the servant who had received one talent came and said, 'Master, I know that you are a strict man. You reap where you did not sow, and you harvest where you did not scatter. BSB BSB: Finally, the servant who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Master, I knew that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed.
UEB I was afraid, so I went away and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have here what belongs to you.' BSB BSB: So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what belongs to you.’
UEB But his master answered and said to him, 'You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sowed and harvest where I have not scattered. BSB BSB: ‘You wicked, lazy servant!’ replied his master. ‘You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed.
UEB Therefore you should have given my money to the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. BSB BSB: Then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received it back with interest.
UEB Therefore take away the talent from him and give it to the servant who has ten talents. BSB BSB: Therefore take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten talents.
UEB For to everyone who possesses, more will be given—even more abundantly. But from anyone who does not possess anything, even what he does have will be taken away. BSB BSB: For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. But the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
UEB Throw the worthless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.' BSB BSB: And throw that worthless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
The Sheep and the Goats 32 UEB Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate the people one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. BSB BSB: All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate the people one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
UEB He will place the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on his left. BSB BSB: He will place the sheep on His right and the goats on His left.
UEB Then the King will say to those on his right hand, 'Come, you who have been blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. BSB BSB: Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
UEB For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me a drink; I was a stranger and you took me in; BSB BSB: For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in,
UEB I was naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you cared for me; I was in prison and you came to me.' BSB BSB: I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me.’
UEB Then the righteous will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you a drink? BSB BSB: Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink?
UEB When did we see you a stranger and take you in? Or naked and clothe you? BSB BSB: When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You?
UEB When did we see you sick or in prison and come to you?' BSB BSB: When did we see You sick or in prison and visit You?’
UEB Then the King will answer and say to them, 'Truly I say to you, what you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it for me.' BSB BSB: And the King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.’
UEB because I was hungry, but you did not give me food; I was thirsty, but you did not give me a drink; BSB BSB: For I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink,
UEB I was a stranger, but you did not take me in; naked, but you did not clothe me; sick and in prison, but you did not care for me.' BSB BSB: I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, I was naked and you did not clothe Me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after Me.’
UEB Then they will also answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not serve you?' BSB BSB: And they too will reply, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’
UEB Then he will answer them and say, 'Truly I say to you, what you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.' BSB BSB: Then the King will answer, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me.’
