The Second Census of Israel (Numbers 1:1–4)
1 UEB It came about after the plague that Yahweh spoke to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron the priest. He said, BSB BSB: After the plague had ended, the LORD said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron the priest,
2 UEB "Count all the community of the people of Israel, from twenty years old and up, by their ancestor's families, all who are able to go to war for Israel." BSB BSB: “Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by the houses of their fathers—all those twenty years of age or older who can serve in the army of Israel.”
3 UEB So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke to them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho and said, BSB BSB: So on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest issued the instruction,
4 UEB "Count the people, from twenty years old and up, as Yahweh commanded Moses and the people of Israel, who came out of the land of Egypt." BSB BSB: “Take a census of the men twenty years of age or older, as the LORD has commanded Moses.” And these were the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt:
The Tribe of Reuben 5 UEB Reuben was the firstborn of Israel. From his son Hanok came the clan of the Hanokites. From Pallu came the clan of the Palluites. BSB BSB: Reuben was the firstborn of Israel. These were the descendants of Reuben: The Hanochite clan from Hanoch, the Palluite clan from Pallu,
6 UEB From Hezron came the clan of the Hezronites. From Karmi came the clan of the Karmites. BSB BSB: the Hezronite clan from Hezron, and the Carmite clan from Carmi.
7 UEB These were the clans of Reuben, who numbered 43,730 men. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Reuben, and their registration numbered 43,730.
8 UEB Eliab was a son of Pallu. BSB BSB: Now the son of Pallu was Eliab,
9 UEB Eliab's sons were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These were the same Dathan and Abiram who followed Korah when they challenged Moses and Aaron and rebelled against Yahweh. BSB BSB: and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. It was Dathan and Abiram, chosen by the congregation, who rebelled against Moses and Aaron with the followers of Korah who rebelled against the LORD.
10 UEB The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up together with Korah when all his followers died. At that time, fire devoured 250 men, who became a warning sign. 14 UEB These were the clans of Simeon's descendants, who numbered 22,200 men. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Simeon, and there were 22,200 men.

18 UEB These were the clans of Gad's descendants, who numbered 40,500 men. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Gad, and their registration numbered 40,500.
The Tribe of Judah 19 UEB Judah's sons were Er and Onan, but these men died in the land of Canaan. BSB BSB: The sons of Judah were Er and Onan, but they died in the land of Canaan.
20 UEB The clans of Judah's other descendants were these: through Shelah, the clan of the Shelanites, through Perez, the clan of the Perezites, and through Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Judah by their clans: The Shelanite clan from Shelah, the Perezite clan from Perez, and the Zerahite clan from Zerah.
21 UEB The descendants of Perez were these: Through Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites, through Hamul, the clan of the Hamulites. BSB BSB: And these were the descendants of Perez: the Hezronite clan from Hezron and the Hamulite clan from Hamul.
22 UEB These were the clans of Judah's descendants, who numbered 76,500 men. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Judah, and their registration numbered 76,500.
The Tribe of Issachar 23 UEB The clans of Issachar's descendants were these: Through Tola, the clan of the Tolaites, through Puah, the clan of the Puites, BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Issachar by their clans: The Tolaite clan from Tola, the Punite clan from Puvah,
24 UEB through Jashub, the clan of the Jashubites, through Shimron, the clan of the Shimronites. BSB BSB: the Jashubite clan from Jashub, and the Shimronite clan from Shimron.
25 UEB These were the clans of Issachar, who numbered 64,300 men. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Issachar, and their registration numbered 64,300.
The Tribe of Zebulun 26 UEB The clans of Zebulun's descendants were these: Through Sered, the clan of the Seredites, through Elon, the clan of the Elonites, through Jahleel, the clan of the Jahleelites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Zebulun by their clans: The Seredite clan from Sered, the Elonite clan from Elon, and the Jahleelite clan from Jahleel.
27 UEB These were the clans of the Zebulunites, who numbered 60,500 men. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Zebulun, and their registration numbered 60,500.
The Tribe of Manasseh 28 UEB The clans of Joseph's descendants were Manasseh and Ephraim. BSB BSB: The descendants of Joseph included the clans of Manasseh and Ephraim.
29 UEB The descendants of Manasseh were these: through Makir, the clan of the Makirites (Makir was Gilead's father), through Gilead, the clan of the Gileadites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Manasseh: The Machirite clan from Machir, the father of Gilead, and the Gileadite clan from Gilead.
30 UEB Gilead's descendants were these: Through Iezer, the clan of the Iezerites, through Helek, the clan of the Helekites, BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Gilead: the Iezerite clan from Iezer, the Helekite clan from Helek,
31 UEB through Asriel, the clan of the Asrielites, through Shechem, the clan of the Shechemites, BSB BSB: the Asrielite clan from Asriel, the Shechemite clan from Shechem,
32 UEB through Shemida, the clan of the Shemidaites, through Hepher, the clan of the Hepherites. BSB BSB: the Shemidaite clan from Shemida, and the Hepherite clan from Hepher.
33 UEB Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons, but only daughters. The names of his daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah, and Tirzah. BSB BSB: Now Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons but only daughters. The names of his daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
34 UEB These were the clans of Manasseh, who numbered 52,700 men. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Manasseh, and their registration numbered 52,700.
The Tribe of Ephraim 35 UEB The clans of Ephraim's descendants were these: Through Shuthelah, the clan of the Shuthelahites, through Beker, the clan of the Bekerites, through Tahan, the clan of the Tahanites. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: The Shuthelahite clan from Shuthelah, the Becherite clan from Becher, and the Tahanite clan from Tahan.
36 UEB The descendants of Shuthelah were, by Eran, the clan of the Eranites. BSB BSB: And the descendants of Shuthelah were the Eranite clan from Eran.
37 UEB These were the clans of Ephraim's descendants, who numbered 32,500 men. These were Joseph's descendants, counted in each of their clans. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Ephraim, and their registration numbered 32,500. These clans were the descendants of Joseph.
The Tribe of Benjamin 38 UEB The clans of Benjamin's descendants were these: Through Bela, the clan of the Belaites, through Ashbel, the clan of the Ashbelites, through Ahiram, the clan of the Ahiramites, BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Benjamin by their clans: The Belaite clan from Bela, the Ashbelite clan from Ashbel, the Ahiramite clan from Ahiram,
39 UEB through Shephupham, the clan of the Shuphamites, through Hupham, the clan of the Huphamites. BSB BSB: the Shuphamite clan from Shupham, and the Huphamite clan from Hupham.
40 UEB Bela's sons were Ard and Naaman. From Ard came the clan of the Ardites, and from Naaman came the clan of the Naamites. BSB BSB: And the descendants of Bela from Ard and Naaman were the Ardite clan from Ard and the Naamite clan from Naaman.
41 UEB These were the clans of Benjamin's descendants. They numbered 45,600 men. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Benjamin, and their registration numbered 45,600.
The Tribe of Dan 42 UEB The clans of Dan's descendants were, by Shuham, the clans of the Shuhamites. These were the clans of Dan's descendants. BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Dan by their clans: The Shuhamite clan from Shuham. These were the clans of Dan.
43 UEB All the clans of the Shuhamites numbered 64,400 men. BSB BSB: All of them were Shuhamite clans, and their registration numbered 64,400.
The Tribe of Asher 44 UEB The clans of Asher's descendants were these: Through Imnah, the clan of the Imnites, through Ishvi, the clan of the Ishvites, through Beriah, the clan of the Beriites. 45 UEB The descendants of Beriah were these: Through Heber, the clan of the Heberites, through Malkiel, the clan of the Malkielites. BSB BSB: And these were the descendants of Beriah: the Heberite clan from Heber and the Malchielite clan from Malchiel.
46 UEB The name of Asher's daughter was Serah. BSB BSB: And the name of Asher’s daughter was Serah.
47 UEB These were the clans of Asher's descendants, who numbered 53,400 men. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Asher, and their registration numbered 53,400.
The Tribe of Naphtali 48 UEB The clans of Naphtali's descendants were these: Through Jahzeel, the clan of the Jahzeelites, through Guni, the clan of the Gunites, BSB BSB: These were the descendants of Naphtali by their clans: The Jahzeelite clan from Jahzeel, the Gunite clan from Guni,
49 UEB through Jezer, the clan of the Jezerites, through Shillem, the clan of the Shillemites. BSB BSB: the Jezerite clan from Jezer, and the Shillemite clan from Shillem.
50 UEB These were the clans of Naphtali's descendants, who numbered 45,400 men. BSB BSB: These were the clans of Naphtali, and their registration numbered 45,400.
51 UEB This was the complete count of men among the people of Israel: 601,730. BSB BSB: These men of Israel numbered 601,730 in all.
Inheritance by Lot 52 UEB Yahweh spoke to Moses and said, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
53 UEB "The land must be divided among these men as an inheritance according to the number of their names. BSB BSB: “The land is to be divided among the tribes as an inheritance, according to the number of names.
54 UEB To the larger clans you must give more inheritance, and to the smaller clans you must give less inheritance. To every family you must give an inheritance according to the number of men who were counted. BSB BSB: Increase the inheritance for a large tribe and decrease it for a small one; each tribe is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those registered.
55 UEB However, the land must be divided by random lots. They must inherit the land as it will be divided among their ancestors' tribes. BSB BSB: Indeed, the land must be divided by lot; they shall receive their inheritance according to the names of the tribes of their fathers.
56 UEB Their inheritance must be divided among the larger and the smaller clans, distributed to them by random lot." BSB BSB: Each inheritance is to be divided by lot among the larger and smaller tribes.”
The Levites Numbered 57 UEB The Levite clans, counted clan by clan, were these: Through Gershon, the clan of the Gershonites, through Kohath, the clan of the Kohathites, through Merari, the clan of the Merarites. BSB BSB: Now these were the Levites numbered by their clans: The Gershonite clan from Gershon, the Kohathite clan from Kohath, and the Merarite clan from Merari.
58 UEB The clans of Levi were these: the clan of the Libnites, the clan of the Hebronites, the clan of the Mahlites, the clan of the Mushites, and the clan of the Korahites. Kohath was the Amram's ancestor. BSB BSB: These were the families of the Levites: The Libnite clan, the Hebronite clan, the Mahlite clan, the Mushite clan, and the Korahite clan. Now Kohath was the father of Amram,
59 UEB The name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, a descendant of Levi, who was born to Levites in Egypt. She bore to Amram their children, who were Aaron, Moses, and Miriam their sister. BSB BSB: and Amram’s wife was named Jochebed. She was also a daughter of Levi, born to Levi in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.
60 UEB To Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. BSB BSB: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar were born to Aaron,
61 UEB Nadab and Abihu died when they offered before Yahweh unacceptable fire. BSB BSB: but Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD.
62 UEB The males who were counted among them numbered twenty-three thousand, all males one month old and up. But they were not counted among Israel's descendants because no inheritance was given to them among the people of Israel. BSB BSB: The registration of the Levites totaled 23,000, every male a month old or more; they were not numbered among the other Israelites, because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.
Only Caleb and Joshua Remain 63 UEB These are the ones who were counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest. They counted the people of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. BSB BSB: These were the ones numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho.
64 UEB But among these there was no man who had been counted by Moses and Aaron the priest when the descendants of Israel were counted in the wilderness of Sinai. 65 UEB For Yahweh had said that all of those people would certainly die in the wilderness. There was not a man left among them, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. BSB BSB: For the LORD had told them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
