The Tribes East of the Jordan (Deuteronomy 3:12–22; Joshua 13:8–14)
UEB Now the descendants of Reuben and of Gad had large numbers of livestock. When they saw the land of Jazer and Gilead, the land was a wonderful place for livestock. BSB BSB: Now the Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, surveyed the lands of Jazer and Gilead, and they saw that the region was suitable for livestock.
UEB So the descendants of Gad and Reuben came and spoke to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the community. They said, BSB BSB: So the Gadites and Reubenites came to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the congregation, and said,
UEB "This is a list of places we have surveyed: Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon. BSB BSB: “Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,
UEB These are the lands that Yahweh attacked before the community of Israel, and they are good places for livestock. We, your servants, have a lot of livestock." BSB BSB: which the LORD conquered before the congregation of Israel, are suitable for livestock—and your servants have livestock.”
UEB They said, "If we have found favor in your eyes, let this land be given to us, your servants, as a possession. Do not make us cross over the Jordan." BSB BSB: “If we have found favor in your sight,” they said, “let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan.”
UEB Moses replied to the descendants of Gad and Reuben, "Should your brothers go to war while you settle down here? BSB BSB: But Moses asked the Gadites and Reubenites, “Shall your brothers go to war while you sit here?
UEB Why discourage the hearts of the people of Israel from going over into the land that Yahweh has given them? BSB BSB: Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing into the land that the LORD has given them?
UEB Your fathers did the same thing when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to examine the land. BSB BSB: This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to inspect the land.
UEB They went up to the Valley of Eshkol. They saw the land and then discouraged the hearts of the people of Israel so that they refused to enter the land that Yahweh had given them. BSB BSB: For when your fathers went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land that the LORD had given them.
UEB Yahweh's anger was kindled on that day. He took an oath and said, BSB BSB: So the anger of the LORD was kindled that day, and He swore an oath, saying,
UEB 'Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and up, will see the land about which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they have not completely followed me, except for BSB BSB: ‘Because they did not follow Me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years of age or older who came out of Egypt will see the land that I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—
UEB Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua son of Nun. Only Caleb and Joshua have completely followed me.' BSB BSB: not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun—because they did follow the LORD wholeheartedly.’
UEB So Yahweh's anger was kindled against Israel. He made them wander around in the wilderness for forty years until all the generation who had done evil in his sight was destroyed. BSB BSB: The anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation who had done evil in His sight was gone.
UEB Look, you have risen up in your fathers' place, like just more sinful men, to add to Yahweh's burning anger toward Israel. BSB BSB: Now behold, you, a brood of sinners, have risen up in place of your fathers to further stoke the burning anger of the LORD against Israel.
UEB If you turn away from following him, he will again leave Israel in the wilderness and you will have destroyed all this people." BSB BSB: For if you turn away from following Him, He will once again leave this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction.”
UEB So they came near Moses and said, "Allow us to build fences here for our cattle and cities for our families. BSB BSB: Then the Gadites and Reubenites approached Moses and said, “We want to build sheepfolds here for our livestock and cities for our little ones.
UEB However, we ourselves will be ready and armed to go with Israel's army until we have led them into their place. But our families will live in the fortified cities because of the other people who still live in this land. BSB BSB: But we will arm ourselves and be ready to go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them into their place. Meanwhile, our little ones will remain in the fortified cities for protection from the inhabitants of the land.
UEB We will not return to our houses until every one of the people of Israel has obtained his inheritance. BSB BSB: We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has taken possession of his inheritance.
UEB We will not inherit the land with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance is here on the east side of the Jordan." BSB BSB: Yet we will not have an inheritance with them across the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan.”
UEB So Moses replied to them, "If you do what you say, if you arm yourselves to go before Yahweh to war, BSB BSB: Moses replied, “If you will do this—if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle,
UEB then every one of your armed men must cross over the Jordan before Yahweh, until he has driven out his enemies from before him BSB BSB: and if every one of your armed men crosses the Jordan before the LORD, until He has driven His enemies out before Him,
UEB and the land is subdued before him. Then afterward you may return. You will be guiltless toward Yahweh and toward Israel. This land will be your possession before Yahweh. BSB BSB: then when the land is subdued before the LORD, you may return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will belong to you as a possession before the LORD.
UEB But if you do not do so, look, you will have sinned against Yahweh. Be sure that your sin will find you out. BSB BSB: But if you do not do this, you will certainly sin against the LORD—and be assured that your sin will find you out.
UEB Build cities for your families and pens for your sheep; then do what you have said." BSB BSB: Build cities for your little ones and folds for your flocks, but do what you have promised.”
UEB The descendants of Gad and Reuben spoke to Moses and said, "Your servants will do as you, our master, commands. BSB BSB: The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, “Your servants will do just as our lord commands.
UEB Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock will stay there in the cities of Gilead. BSB BSB: Our children, our wives, our livestock, and all our animals will remain here in the cities of Gilead.
UEB However, we, your servants, will cross over before Yahweh to battle, every man who is armed for war, as you, our master, say." BSB BSB: But your servants are equipped for war, and every man will cross over to the battle before the LORD, just as our lord says.”
UEB So Moses gave instructions concerning them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua son of Nun, and to the leaders of the ancestor's clans in the tribes of the people of Israel. BSB BSB: So Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua son of Nun, and to the family leaders of the tribes of Israel.
UEB Moses said to them, "If the descendants of Gad and Reuben cross over the Jordan with you, every man who is armed to battle before Yahweh, and if the land is subdued before you, then you will give them the land of Gilead as a possession. BSB BSB: And Moses said to them, “If the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you, with every man armed for battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, then you are to give them the land of Gilead as a possession.
UEB But if they do not cross over with you armed, then they will acquire their possessions among you in the land of Canaan." BSB BSB: But if they do not arm themselves and go across with you, then they must accept their possession among you in the land of Canaan.”
UEB So the descendants of Gad and Reuben answered and said, "As Yahweh has said to us, your servants, this is what we will do. BSB BSB: The Gadites and Reubenites replied, “As the LORD has spoken to your servants, so we will do.
UEB We will cross over armed before Yahweh into the land of Canaan, but our possessed inheritance will remain with us on this side of the Jordan." BSB BSB: We will cross over into the land of Canaan armed before the LORD, that we may have our inheritance on this side of the Jordan.”
UEB So to the descendants of Gad and Reuben, and also to the half tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph, Moses gave the kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorites, and of Og, king of Bashan. He gave to them the land, and distributed to them all its cities with their borders, the cities of the land around them. BSB BSB: So Moses gave to the Gadites, to the Reubenites, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan—the land including its cities and the territory surrounding them.
UEB The descendants of Gad rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, BSB BSB: And the Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
UEB Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, BSB BSB: Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
UEB Beth Nimrah, and Beth Haran as fortified cities with pens for sheep. BSB BSB: Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran as fortified cities, and they built folds for their flocks.
UEB The descendants of Reuben rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim, BSB BSB: The Reubenites built up Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
UEB Nebo, Baal Meon—their names were later changed, and Sibmah. They gave other names to the cities that they rebuilt. BSB BSB: as well as Nebo and Baal-meon (whose names were changed), and Sibmah. And they renamed the cities they rebuilt.
UEB The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it away from the Amorites who were in it. BSB BSB: The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it, and drove out the Amorites who were there.
UEB Then Moses gave Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and his people settled there. BSB BSB: So Moses gave Gilead to the clan of Machir son of Manasseh, and they settled there.
UEB Jair son of Manasseh went and captured its towns and called them Havvoth Jair. BSB BSB: Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, went and captured their villages and called them Havvoth-jair.
UEB Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and he called it Nobah, after his own name. BSB BSB: And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages and called it Nobah, after his own name.
