The Boundaries of Canaan (Genesis 15:8–21)
1 UEB Yahweh spoke to Moses and said, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
2 UEB "Command the people of Israel and say to them, 'When you enter the land of Canaan, the land that will belong to you, the land of Canaan and its borders, BSB BSB: “Command the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land of Canaan, it will be allotted to you as an inheritance with these boundaries:
3 UEB your southern border will extend from the wilderness of Zin along the border of Edom. The eastern end of the southern border will be on a line that ends at the southern end of the Salt Sea. BSB BSB: Your southern border will extend from the Wilderness of Zin along the border of Edom. On the east, your southern border will run from the end of the Salt Sea,
4 UEB Your border will turn south from the hill of Akrabbim and pass along through the wilderness of Zin. From there, it will run south of Kadesh Barnea and continue to Hazar Addar and further to Azmon. BSB BSB: cross south of the Ascent of Akrabbim, continue to Zin, and go south of Kadesh-barnea. Then it will go on to Hazar-addar and proceed to Azmon,
5 UEB From there, the border will turn from Azmon toward the brook of Egypt and follow it to the sea. BSB BSB: where it will turn from Azmon, join the Brook of Egypt, and end at the Sea.
6 UEB The western border will be the coastline of the Great Sea. This will be your western border. BSB BSB: Your western border will be the coastline of the Great Sea; this will be your boundary on the west.
7 UEB Your northern border will extend along a line that you must mark out from the Great Sea to Mount Hor, BSB BSB: Your northern border will run from the Great Sea directly to Mount Hor,
8 UEB then from Mount Hor to Lebo Hamath, then on to Zedad. BSB BSB: and from Mount Hor to Lebo-hamath, then extend to Zedad,
9 UEB Then the border will continue to Ziphron and end at Hazar Enan. This will be your northern border. BSB BSB: continue to Ziphron, and end at Hazar-enan. This will be your boundary on the north.
10 UEB Then you must mark out your eastern border from Hazar Enan south to Shepham. BSB BSB: And your eastern border will run straight from Hazar-enan to Shepham,
11 UEB Then the eastern border will go down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain. The border will continue along the east side of the Sea of Kinnereth. BSB BSB: then go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain and continue along the slopes east of the Sea of Chinnereth.
12 UEB Then the border will continue south along the Jordan River to the Salt Sea and continue down the eastern border of the Salt Sea. This will be your land, following its borders all around.'" BSB BSB: Then the border will go down along the Jordan and end at the Salt Sea. This will be your land, defined by its borders on all sides.”
13 UEB Then Moses commanded the people of Israel and said, "This is the land that you will receive by lot, which Yahweh has commanded to give to the nine tribes and to the half tribe. BSB BSB: So Moses commanded the Israelites, “Apportion this land by lot as an inheritance. The LORD has commanded that it be given to the nine and a half tribes.
14 UEB The tribe of the descendants of Reuben, following the assignment of property to their ancestor's tribe, and the tribe of the descendants of Gad, following the assignment of property to their ancestor's tribe, and the half tribe of Manasseh have all received their land. BSB BSB: For the tribes of the Reubenites and Gadites, along with the half-tribe of Manasseh, have already received their inheritance.
15 UEB The two tribes and the half tribe have received their share of land beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, toward the sunrise." BSB BSB: These two and a half tribes have received their inheritance across the Jordan from Jericho, toward the sunrise.”
Leaders to Divide the Land 16 UEB Yahweh spoke to Moses and said, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
17 UEB "These are the names of the men who will divide the land for your inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun. BSB BSB: “These are the names of the men who are to assign the land as an inheritance for you: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun.
18 UEB You must choose one leader from every tribe to divide the land for their clans. BSB BSB: Appoint one leader from each tribe to distribute the land.
19 UEB These are the names of the men: From the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh. BSB BSB: These are their names: Caleb son of Jephunneh from the tribe of Judah;
20 UEB From the tribe of the descendants of Simeon, Shemuel son of Ammihud. BSB BSB: Shemuel son of Ammihud from the tribe of Simeon;
21 UEB From the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad son of Kislon. BSB BSB: Elidad son of Chislon from the tribe of Benjamin;
22 UEB From of the tribe of the descendants of Dan a leader, Bukki son of Jogli. BSB BSB: Bukki son of Jogli, a leader from the tribe of Dan;
23 UEB From the descendants of Joseph, of the tribe of the descendants of Manasseh a leader, Hanniel son of Ephod. BSB BSB: Hanniel son of Ephod, a leader from the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph;
24 UEB From the tribe of the descendants of Ephraim a leader, Kemuel son of Shiphtan. BSB BSB: Kemuel son of Shiphtan, a leader from the tribe of Ephraim;
25 UEB From the tribe of the descendants of Zebulun a leader, Elizaphan son of Parnak. BSB BSB: Eli-zaphan son of Parnach, a leader from the tribe of Zebulun;
26 UEB From the tribe of the descendants of Issachar a leader, Paltiel son of Azzan. BSB BSB: Paltiel son of Azzan, a leader from the tribe of Issachar;
27 UEB From the tribe of the descendants of Asher a leader, Ahihud son of Shelomi. BSB BSB: Ahihud son of Shelomi, a leader from the tribe of Asher;
28 UEB From the tribe of the descendants of Naphtali a leader, Pedahel son of Ammihud." BSB BSB: and Pedahel son of Ammihud, a leader from the tribe of Naphtali.”
29 UEB Yahweh commanded these men to divide the land of Canaan and to give each of the tribes of Israel their share. BSB BSB: These are the ones whom the LORD commanded to apportion the inheritance to the Israelites in the land of Canaan.
