A Remnant Chosen by Grace 2 UEB God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says about Elijah, how he pleaded with God against Israel? BSB BSB: God did not reject His people, whom He foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says about Elijah, how he appealed to God against Israel:
UEB "Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have broken down your altars. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life." BSB BSB: “Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well”?
UEB But what does God's answer say to him? "I have reserved for myself seven thousand men who have not bent the knee to Baal." BSB BSB: And what was the divine reply to him? “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”
UEB Even so then, at this present time also there is a remnant because of the choice of grace. BSB BSB: In the same way, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.
UEB But if it is by grace, it is no longer by works. Otherwise grace would no longer be grace. BSB BSB: And if it is by grace, then it is no longer by works. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.
UEB What then? The thing that Israel was seeking, it did not obtain, but the chosen obtained it, and the rest were hardened. BSB BSB: What then? What Israel was seeking, it failed to obtain, but the elect did. The others were hardened,
UEB It is just as it is written: "God has given them a spirit of dullness, eyes so that they should not see, and ears so that they should not hear, to this very day." BSB BSB: as it is written: “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see, and ears that could not hear, to this very day.”
UEB Then David says, "Let their table become a net and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them. BSB BSB: And David says: “May their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution to them.
UEB Let their eyes be darkened so that they may not see, and bend their backs continually." BSB BSB: May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.”
The Ingrafting of the Gentiles 11 UEB I say then, "Did they stumble so as to fall?" May it never be. Instead, by their failure, salvation has come to the Gentiles, in order to provoke them to jealousy. BSB BSB: I ask then, did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Certainly not! However, because of their trespass, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel jealous.
UEB Now if their failure is the riches of the world, and if their loss is the riches of the Gentiles, how much greater will their completion be? BSB BSB: But if their trespass means riches for the world, and their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their fullness bring!
UEB But now I am speaking to you Gentiles, and as long as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I take pride in my ministry. BSB BSB: I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry
UEB Perhaps I will provoke to jealousy those who are of my own flesh. Perhaps we will save some of them. BSB BSB: in the hope that I may provoke my own people to jealousy and save some of them.
UEB For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? BSB BSB: For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
UEB If the firstfruits are reserved, so is the lump of dough. If the root is reserved, so are the branches. BSB BSB: If the first part of the dough is holy, so is the whole batch; if the root is holy, so are the branches.
UEB But if some of the branches were broken off, if you, a wild olive branch, were grafted in among them, and if you shared with them in the rich root of the olive tree, BSB BSB: Now if some branches have been broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others to share in the nourishment of the olive root,
UEB do not boast over the branches. But if you do boast, it is not you who supports the root, but the root that supports you. BSB BSB: do not boast over those branches. If you do, remember this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.
UEB You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in." BSB BSB: You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.”
UEB That is true. Because of their unbelief they were broken off, but you stand firm because of your faith. Do not think too highly of yourself, but fear. BSB BSB: That is correct: They were broken off because of unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid.
UEB For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. BSB BSB: For if God did not spare the natural branches, He will certainly not spare you either.
UEB Look at, then, the kind actions and the severity of God: severity came on the Jews who fell, but God's kindness comes on you, if you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you also will be cut off. BSB BSB: Take notice, therefore, of the kindness and severity of God: severity to those who fell, but kindness to you, if you continue in His kindness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.
UEB And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in. For God is able to graft them in again. BSB BSB: And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.
UEB For if you were cut out of what is by nature a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature were grafted into a good olive tree, how much more will these Jews, who are the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree? BSB BSB: For if you were cut from a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature were grafted into one that is cultivated, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!
All Israel Will Be Saved 26 UEB Thus all Israel will be saved, just as it is written: "Out of Zion will come the Deliverer. He will remove ungodliness from Jacob, BSB BSB: And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come from Zion; He will remove godlessness from Jacob.
UEB and this will be my covenant with them, when I will take away their sins." BSB BSB: And this is My covenant with them when I take away their sins.”
UEB For the gifts and the call of God are unchangeable. BSB BSB: For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable.
UEB For you were formerly disobedient to God, but now you have received mercy because of their disobedience. BSB BSB: Just as you who formerly disobeyed God have now received mercy through their disobedience,
UEB In the same way, now these Jews have been disobedient. The result was that by the mercy shown to you they may also now receive mercy. BSB BSB: so they too have now disobeyed, in order that they too may now receive mercy through the mercy shown to you.
UEB For God has shut up all into disobedience, in order that he might show mercy on all. BSB BSB: For God has consigned everyone to disobedience so that He may have mercy on everyone.
A Hymn of Praise (Isaiah 40:9–31)
UEB "For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has become his advisor? BSB BSB: “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor?”
UEB Or who has first given anything to God, that God must repay him?" BSB BSB: “Who has first given to God, that God should repay him?”
UEB For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen. BSB BSB: For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.
