Hannah’s Prayer of Thanksgiving (Luke 1:46–56)
ULT And Hannah prayed and said,“My heart rejoices in Yahweh, my horn is high in Yahweh. My mouth{ is} wide against my enemies, for I rejoice in your salvation. BSB BSB: At that time Hannah prayed: “My heart rejoices in the LORD; my horn is exalted in the LORD. My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, for I rejoice in Your salvation.
ULT None{ is} holy like Yahweh. Indeed,{ there is} none besides you, and{ there is} no rock like our God. BSB BSB: There is no one holy like the LORD. Indeed, there is no one besides You! And there is no Rock like our God.
ULT May you not multiply, may you{ not} speak, haughty, haughty! Let the arrogant go out from your mouth. For Yahweh{ is} a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. BSB BSB: Do not boast so proudly, or let arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by Him actions are weighed.
ULT The bow of the mighty are broken, but the stumbling ones gird on strength. BSB BSB: The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble are equipped with strength.
ULT The satisfied hire themselves out for bread, but the hungry cease. Even the barren bears seven, but the plenteous of sons languishes. BSB BSB: The well-fed hire themselves out for food, but the starving hunger no more. The barren woman gives birth to seven, but she who has many sons pines away.
ULT Yahweh makes die and makes alive, causing to go down to Sheol and causing to come up. BSB BSB: The LORD brings death and gives life; He brings down to Sheol and raises up.
ULT Yahweh is making poor and making rich, bringing down yet bringing up. BSB BSB: The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts.
ULT Raising the poor from the dust, he lifts up the needy from the trash heap to make{ them} sit with nobles, and he makes them inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth{ are} to Yahweh, and he has set the world on them. BSB BSB: He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap. He seats them among princes and bestows on them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s, and upon them He has set the world.
ULT He will keep the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked will be silenced in darkness. For not by strength does a man prevail. BSB BSB: He guards the steps of His faithful ones, but the wicked perish in darkness; for by his own strength shall no man prevail.
ULT { By} Yahweh, the ones opposing him will be shattered. He will make thunder against him in the heavens. Yahweh will judge the ends of the earth. And he will give strength to his king and lift up the horn of his anointed one.” BSB BSB: Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered. He will thunder from heaven against them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth and will give power to His king. He will exalt the horn of His anointed.”
ULT Then Elkanah went to Ramah, to his house. And the boy was serving Yahweh at the face of Eli the priest. BSB BSB: Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy began ministering to the LORD before Eli the priest.
Eli’s Wicked Sons 12 ULT Now the sons of Eli{ were} sons of wickedness. They did not know Yahweh. BSB BSB: Now the sons of Eli were wicked men; they had no regard for the LORD
ULT Now the custom of the priests with the people{ was},{ when} any man was sacrificing a sacrifice, that the servant of the priest would come at the boiling of the meat, and a fork{ with} three prongs{ was} in his hand, BSB BSB: or for the custom of the priests with the people. When any man offered a sacrifice, the servant of the priest would come with a three-pronged meat fork while the meat was boiling
ULT and he would thrust{ it} into the pan or into the kettle or into the cauldron or into the pot. All that the fork brought up, the priest would take with him. Thus they did to all of Israel,{ to} the ones coming there at Shiloh. BSB BSB: and plunge it into the pan or kettle or cauldron or cooking pot. And the priest would claim for himself whatever the meat fork brought up. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh.
ULT Also, before they burned the fat, the servant of the priest would come, and he would say to the man sacrificing,“Give meat to the priest to roast, and he will not take boiled meat from you, but surely raw.” BSB BSB: Even before the fat was burned, the servant of the priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to roast, because he will not accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
ULT And the man would say to him,“Burning, let them burn the fat as the day, then take for yourself what your soul desires.” But he would say,“No, but you shall give now, and if not, I will take by force.” BSB BSB: And if any man said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you may take whatever you want,” the servant would reply, “No, you must give it to me right now. If you refuse, I will take it by force!”
ULT So the sin of the young men{ was} very great at the face of Yahweh. For the men disdained the offering of Yahweh. BSB BSB: Thus the sin of these young men was severe in the sight of the LORD, for they were treating the LORD’s offering with contempt.
ULT Now Samuel was serving at the face of Yahweh, a boy girded{ with} an ephod of linen. BSB BSB: Now Samuel was ministering before the LORD—a boy wearing a linen ephod.
ULT And his mother would make a small robe for him, and she would bring{ it} to him from days to days, in her coming up with her husband to sacrifice the sacrifice of the days. BSB BSB: Each year his mother would make him a little robe and bring it to him when she went with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice.
ULT And Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife and would say,“May Yahweh give seed to you from this woman in place of the request that one requested of Yahweh.” And they would go to his place. BSB BSB: And Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the LORD give you children by this woman in place of the one she dedicated to the LORD.” Then they would go home.
ULT For Yahweh visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew with Yahweh. BSB BSB: So the LORD attended to Hannah, and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD.
ULT Now Eli was very old. And he heard all that his sons were doing to all of Israel and that they were lying with the women serving{ at} the entrance of the tent of meeting. BSB BSB: Now Eli was very old, and he heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they were sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
ULT And he said to them,“Why do you do like these things, that I am hearing evil things of you from all of these people? BSB BSB: “Why are you doing these things?” Eli said to his sons. “I hear about your wicked deeds from all these people.
ULT No, my sons! For the report{ is} not good that I am hearing the people of Yahweh passing on. BSB BSB: No, my sons; it is not a good report I hear circulating among the LORD’s people.
ULT If a man sins against a man, then God will intercede for him, but if a man sins against Yahweh, who will intercede for him?” But they would not listen to the voice of their father, for Yahweh desired to make them die. BSB BSB: If a man sins against another man, God can intercede for him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him?” But they would not listen to their father, since the LORD intended to put them to death.
ULT But the boy Samuel was going and growing and{ was} good both with Yahweh and also with men. BSB BSB: And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the LORD and with man.
A Prophecy against the House of Eli 27 ULT And a man of God came to Eli and said to him,“Thus says Yahweh,‘Revealing myself, did I{ not} reveal myself to the house of your father in their being in Egypt, to the house of Pharaoh? BSB BSB: Then a man of God came to Eli and told him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Did I not clearly reveal Myself to your father’s house when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh’s house?
ULT And I chose him from all of the tribes of Israel for myself for a priest, to go up on my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod to my face. And I gave to the house of your father all of the gifts of the sons of Israel. BSB BSB: And out of all the tribes of Israel I selected your father to be My priest, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in My presence. I also gave to the house of your father all the food offerings of the Israelites.
ULT Why do you kick at my sacrifice and at my offering that I commanded{ for} the Dwelling and honor your sons more than me by the fattening of yourselves from the first of every offering of Israel, of my people? BSB BSB: Why then do you kick at My sacrifice and offering that I have prescribed for My dwelling place? You have honored your sons more than Me by fattening yourselves with the best of all the offerings of My people Israel.’
ULT Therefore’— the declaration of Yahweh, the God of Israel—‘saying, I said your house and the house of your father would walk about to my face forever. But now’— the declaration of Yahweh—‘profane to me! For the ones honoring me, I will honor, but the ones disdaining me, they will despise. BSB BSB: Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever. But now the LORD declares: Far be it from Me! For I will honor those who honor Me, but those who despise Me will be disdained.
ULT Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your arm and the arm of the house of your father from the being of an old man in your house. BSB BSB: Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that no one in it will reach old age.
ULT And you will see the distress of the Dwelling, in all that he will do good with Israel. And an old man will not be in your house all of the days. BSB BSB: You will see distress in My dwelling place. Despite all that is good in Israel, no one in your house will ever again reach old age.
ULT But I will not cut off a man to you from near my altar, to make your eyes fail and to make your soul grieve. And all of the increase of your house will die{ as} men. BSB BSB: And every one of you that I do not cut off from My altar, I will cause your eyes to fail and your heart to grieve. All your descendants will die by the sword of men.
ULT And this{ is} the sign for you that will come to the two of your sons, to Hophni and Phinehas: in one day the two of them will die. BSB BSB: And this sign shall come to you concerning your two sons Hophni and Phinehas: They will both die on the same day.
ULT And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest. He will do just as{ is} in my heart and in my soul. And I will build for him an established house, and he will walk about to the face of my anointed all of the days. BSB BSB: Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest. He will do whatever is in My heart and mind. And I will build for him an enduring house, and he will walk before My anointed one for all time.
ULT And it will happen that every remaining one in your house will come to bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and he will say,“Please assign me to one of the priestly positions to eat a piece of bread.”’” BSB BSB: And everyone left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a morsel of bread, pleading, “Please appoint me to some priestly office so that I can eat a piece of bread.”’”
