Athaliah and Joash (2 Chronicles 22:10–12)
1 ULT Now Athaliah{ was} the mother of Ahaziah, and she saw that her son had died. And she arose, and she destroyed all of the seed of the kingdom. BSB BSB: When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to annihilate all the royal heirs.
2 ULT But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, the sister of Ahaziah, took Joash, the son of Ahaziah, and she stole him away from the midst of the sons of the king being killed, him and his nurse, in the room of the beds. And they hid him from the face of Athaliah, and he was not killed. BSB BSB: But Jehosheba daughter of King Joram, the sister of Ahaziah, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the sons of the king who were being murdered. She put him and his nurse in a bedroom to hide him from Athaliah, and he was not killed.
3 ULT And he was with her{ in} the house of Yahweh, being hidden six years, and Athaliah reigned over the land. BSB BSB: And Joash remained hidden with his nurse in the house of the LORD for six years while Athaliah ruled the land.
Joash Anointed King of Judah (2 Chronicles 23:1–11)
4 ULT And in the seventh year, Jehoiada sent, and he took the commanders of hundreds to the Carite and to the runners, and he brought them to himself at the house of Yahweh. And he cut a covenant with them, and he made them swear in the house of Yahweh, and he showed them the son of the king. BSB BSB: Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada sent for the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, and the guards, and had them brought into the house of the LORD. There he made a covenant with them and put them under oath. He showed them the king’s son
5 ULT And he commanded them, saying,“This{ is} the thing that you shall do. A third of you coming in on the Sabbath indeed{ shall be} keepers of the keeping of the house of the king, BSB BSB: and commanded them, “This is what you are to do: A third of you who come on duty on the Sabbath shall guard the royal palace,
6 ULT and a third{ shall be} at the gate of Sur, and a third{ shall be} at the gate behind the runners. And you shall keep the keeping of the house, as a barrier. BSB BSB: a third shall be at the gate of Sur, and a third at the gate behind the guards. You are to take turns guarding the temple—
7 ULT And the two of the hands among you, everyone going out on the Sabbath, even they shall keep the keeping of the house of Yahweh for the king. BSB BSB: the two divisions that would go off duty on the Sabbath are to guard the house of the LORD for the king.
8 ULT And you shall surround around the king all around, a man with his weapons in his hand, and one coming to the ranks shall be killed. And be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in.” BSB BSB: You must surround the king with weapons in hand, and anyone who approaches the ranks must be put to death. You must stay close to the king wherever he goes.”
9 ULT And the captains of the hundreds did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. And they took, a man his men, the ones coming in on the Sabbath with the ones going out on the Sabbath, and they came to Jehoiada the priest. BSB BSB: So the commanders of hundreds did everything that Jehoiada the priest had ordered. Each of them took his men—those coming on duty on the Sabbath and those going off duty—and came to Jehoiada the priest.
10 ULT And the priest gave to the captains of the hundreds the spears and the shields that{ were} to King David that{ were} in the house of Yahweh. BSB BSB: Then the priest gave to the commanders of hundreds the spears and shields of King David from the house of the LORD.
11 ULT And the runners stood, a man with his weapons in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, to the altar and to the house, around the king all around. BSB BSB: And the guards stood with weapons in hand surrounding the king by the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.
12 ULT And he brought out the son of the king, and he set a crown on him, and the testimony, and they made him king, and they anointed him. And they struck palm, and they said,“May the king live!” BSB BSB: Then Jehoiada brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, presented him with the Testimony, and proclaimed him king. They anointed him, and the people clapped their hands and declared, “Long live the king!”
The Death of Athaliah (2 Chronicles 23:12–15)
13 ULT And Athaliah heard the sound of the runners{ and} the people, and she came to the people{ at} the house of Yahweh. BSB BSB: When Athaliah heard the noise from the guards and the people, she went out to the people in the house of the LORD.
14 ULT And she looked, and behold, the king was standing by the pillar, according to the custom, and the commanders and the trumpeters{ were} near the king, and all of the people of the land were rejoicing and blasting on trumpets. And Athaliah tore her clothes, and she called out,“Conspiracy! Conspiracy!” BSB BSB: And she looked out and saw the king standing by the pillar, according to the custom. The officers and trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Then Athaliah tore her clothes and screamed, “Treason! Treason!”
15 ULT And Jehoiada the priest commanded the commanders of hundreds, the officers of the force, and said to them,“Bring her from the house to the ranks. And the one coming after her, kill with the sword.” For the priest said,“Let her not be killed in the house of Yahweh.” BSB BSB: And Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”
16 ULT And they put two hands to her, and she went the way of the entrance of horses{ to} the house of the king, and she was killed there. BSB BSB: So they seized Athaliah as she reached the horses’ entrance to the palace grounds, and there she was put to death.
Jehoiada Restores the Worship of the LORD (2 Chronicles 23:16–21)
17 ULT And Jehoiada cut a covenant between Yahweh and between the king and between the people, to become a people for Yahweh, and between the king and between the people. BSB BSB: Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people that they would be the LORD’s people. He also made a covenant between the king and the people.
18 ULT And all of the people of the land went{ to} the house of Baal, and they tore down his altar, and they shattered his images thoroughly, and they killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, to the face of the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the house of Yahweh. BSB BSB: So all the people of the land went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed the altars and idols to pieces, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars. And Jehoiada the priest posted guards for the house of the LORD.
19 ULT And he took the commanders of the hundreds and the Carite and the runners and all of the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of Yahweh, and they entered the way of the gate of the runners{ into} the house of the king. And he sat on the throne of the kings. BSB BSB: He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, the guards, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD and entered the royal palace by way of the Gate of the Guards. Then Joash took his seat on the royal throne,
20 ULT And all of the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet, for they had killed Athaliah with the sword{ at} the house of the king. BSB BSB: and all the people of the land rejoiced. And the city was quiet, because Athaliah had been put to the sword at the royal palace.
21 ULT Joash{ was} a son of seven years when he reigned. BSB BSB: Joash was seven years old when he became king.
