Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors (Jeremiah 12:14–17)
2 ULT And he said,“Yahweh roars from Zion, and from Jerusalem he gives his voice, and the pastures of the shepherds mourn, and the head of Carmel dries up.” BSB BSB: He said: “The LORD roars from Zion and raises His voice from Jerusalem; the pastures of the shepherds mourn, and the summit of Carmel withers.”
3 ULT Thus says Yahweh,“For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn it back, because of their threshing the Gilead with the threshing sledges of iron. BSB BSB: This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Damascus, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they threshed Gilead with sledges of iron.
4 ULT And I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, and it will devour the citadels of Ben Hadad. BSB BSB: So I will send fire upon the house of Hazael to consume the citadels of Ben-hadad.
5 ULT And I will break the bar of Damascus, and I will cut off the seated{ one} from the Valley of Aven and the one grasping the scepter from Beth Eden, and the people of Aram will go into exile to Kir,” says Yahweh. BSB BSB: I will break down the gates of Damascus; I will cut off the ruler from the Valley of Aven and the one who wields the scepter in Beth-eden. The people of Aram will be exiled to Kir,” says the LORD.
6 ULT Thus says Yahweh,“For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn it back, because of their taking into exile a complete exile, to hand{ them} over to Edom. BSB BSB: This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Gaza, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they exiled a whole population, delivering them up to Edom.
7 ULT And I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, and it will devour her citadels. BSB BSB: So I will send fire upon the walls of Gaza, to consume its citadels.
8 ULT And I will cut off the seated{ one} from Ashdod, and the one grasping the scepter from Ashkelon, and I will turn back my hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines will perish,” says my Lord Yahweh. BSB BSB: I will cut off the ruler of Ashdod and the one who wields the scepter in Ashkelon. I will turn My hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines will perish,” says the Lord GOD.
9 ULT Thus says Yahweh,“For three transgressions of Tyre, and for four, I will not turn it back, because of their handing over a complete exile to Edom, and they did not remember the covenant of brothers. BSB BSB: This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Tyre, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they delivered up a whole congregation of exiles to Edom and broke a covenant of brotherhood.
10 ULT And I will send a fire on the wall of Tyre, and it will devour her citadels.” BSB BSB: So I will send fire upon the walls of Tyre to consume its citadels.”
11 ULT Thus says Yahweh,“For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn it back, because of his pursuing his brother with the sword, and he destroyed his compassions, and his nose tore perpetually, and his fury, he kept it continually. BSB BSB: This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Edom, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because he pursued his brother with the sword and stifled all compassion; his anger raged continually, and his fury flamed incessantly.
12 ULT And I will send a fire on Teman, and it will devour the citadels of Bozrah.” BSB BSB: So I will send fire upon Teman to consume the citadels of Bozrah.”
13 ULT Thus says Yahweh,“For three transgressions of the sons of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn it back, because of their ripping open the pregnant women of the Gilead, in order to enlarge their border. BSB BSB: This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of the Ammonites, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead in order to enlarge their territory.
14 ULT And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it will devour her citadels, with a shout in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind. BSB BSB: So I will kindle a fire in the walls of Rabbah to consume its citadels amid war cries on the day of battle and a violent wind on the day of tempest.
15 ULT And their king will go into the exile, he and his officials together,” says Yahweh. BSB BSB: Their king will go into exile—he and his princes together,” says the LORD.
