Woe to Those at Ease in Zion (Luke 6:24–26)
ULT Woe to the ones at ease in Zion, and{ to} the ones trusting in the mountain of Samaria, designated{ ones} of the first of the nations— and to them the house of Israel comes! BSB BSB: Woe to those at ease in Zion and those secure on Mount Samaria, the distinguished ones of the foremost nation, to whom the house of Israel comes.
ULT Cross over to Calneh and see, and go from there to Hamath Rabbah, and go down to Gath of the Philistines.{ Are} they better than these kingdoms? Or{ is} their border greater than your border? BSB BSB: Cross over to Calneh and see; go from there to the great Hamath; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Is their territory larger than yours?
ULT — the ones putting far off the evil day, but you bring near a seat of violence; BSB BSB: You dismiss the day of calamity and bring near a reign of violence.
ULT — the ones improvising on the mouth of the harp; like David they devised for themselves instruments of song; BSB BSB: You improvise songs on the harp like David and invent your own musical instruments.
ULT — the ones drinking from bowls of wine, and they anoint{ themselves} with the first of oils, but they are not grieved over the breaking of Joseph. BSB BSB: You drink wine by the bowlful and anoint yourselves with the finest oils, but you fail to grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
ULT Therefore, now they will go into exile at the head of the exiles, and the revelry of the sprawling ones will depart. BSB BSB: Therefore, you will now go into exile as the first of the captives, and your feasting and lounging will come to an end.
The Pride of Israel 8 ULT The Lord Yahweh has sworn by his soul— the declaration of Yahweh, the God of Armies—“I am abhorring the pride of Jacob, and his citadels I hate, and I will give over a city and its fullness.” BSB BSB: The Lord GOD has sworn by Himself—the LORD, the God of Hosts, has declared: “I abhor Jacob’s pride and detest his citadels, so I will deliver up the city and everything in it.”
ULT And it will happen, if ten men remain in one house, then they will die. BSB BSB: And if there are ten men left in one house, they too will die.
ULT And his kinsman and the one burning him will lift him up to bring out the bones from the house, and he will say to the one who{ is} in the innermost parts of the house,“Is there yet{ anyone} with you?” and he will say,“None.” Then he will say,“Hush! For not to make mention of the name of Yahweh.” BSB BSB: And when the relative who is to burn the bodies picks them up to remove them from the house, he will call to one inside, “Is anyone else with you?” “None,” that person will answer. “Silence,” the relative will retort, “for the name of the LORD must not be invoked.”
ULT For, behold, Yahweh is commanding, and he will strike the great house into fragments, and the small house into fissures. BSB BSB: For the LORD gives a command: “The great house will be smashed to pieces, and the small house to rubble.”
ULT Do horses run on the cliff? Or does one plow{ it} with oxen? For you have turned justice into poisonweed, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood; BSB BSB: “Do horses gallop on the cliffs? Does one plow the sea with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood—
ULT — the ones rejoicing over Lo Debar, the ones saying,“Have we not by our strength taken Karnaim for ourselves?” BSB BSB: you who rejoice in Lo-debar and say, ‘Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?’
ULT “For behold me raising up against you, house of Israel”— the declaration of Yahweh, the God of Armies—“a nation, and they will oppress you, from Lebo Hamath to the brook of the Arabah.” BSB BSB: For behold, I will raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel,” declares the LORD, the God of Hosts, “and they will oppress you from Lebo-hamath to the Brook of the Arabah.”
