Moses at the Burning Bush (Acts 7:30–38)
ULT And Moses was shepherding the flock of Jethro his father- in- law, the priest of Midian. And he led the flock beyond the wilderness, and he came to the mountain of God, to Horeb. BSB BSB: Meanwhile, Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.
ULT And the angel of Yahweh appeared to him in a flame of fire from the middle of a bush. And he looked, and behold, the bush was burning in the fire, but the bush was not being consumed. BSB BSB: There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a blazing fire from within a bush. Moses saw the bush ablaze with fire, but it was not consumed.
ULT And Moses said,“Let me turn aside and see this great sight! Why does the bush not burn up?” BSB BSB: So Moses thought, “I must go over and see this marvelous sight. Why is the bush not burning up?”
ULT And Yahweh saw that he had turned aside in order to look, and God called to him from the middle of the bush, and he said,“Moses, Moses.” And he said,“Behold me!” BSB BSB: When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called out to him from within the bush, “Moses, Moses!” “Here I am,” he answered.
ULT And he said,“You must not come close to here. Take your sandals off from on your feet, for the place on which you are standing, it is holy ground.” BSB BSB: “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
ULT And he said,“I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid from staring toward God. BSB BSB: Then He said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.
ULT And Yahweh said,“I have certainly seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt. And I have heard their cries from the faces of those who oppress him. I surely know his anguish. BSB BSB: The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the affliction of My people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their oppressors, and I am aware of their sufferings.
ULT And now, behold, the cry of the sons of Israel has come to me. And moreover, I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians are oppressing them. BSB BSB: And now the cry of the Israelites has reached Me, and I have seen how severely the Egyptians are oppressing them.
ULT And now go, and I shall send you to Pharaoh, and bring out my people, the sons of Israel, from Egypt.” BSB BSB: Therefore, go! I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring My people the Israelites out of Egypt.”
ULT And Moses said to God,“Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring out the sons of Israel from Egypt?” BSB BSB: But Moses asked God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
ULT And he said,“I shall certainly be with you, and this will be the sign for you that I have sent you: when you bring the people out from Egypt, you all will serve God on this mountain.” BSB BSB: “I will surely be with you,” God said, “and this will be the sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, all of you will worship God on this mountain.”
ULT And Moses said to God,“Behold, I am about to go to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them,‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ And they will say to me,‘What is his name?’ what should I say to them?” BSB BSB: Then Moses asked God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ What should I tell them?”
ULT And God also said to Moses,“You shall speak this way to the sons of Israel:‘Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, sent me to you. This is my name forever, and this is my memorial from generation to generation.’ BSB BSB: God also told Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.
ULT Go and gather the elders of Israel, and say to them,‘Yahweh, the God of your fathers, appeared to me, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to say,“I have certainly attended to you and what is being done to you in Egypt, BSB BSB: Go, assemble the elders of Israel and say to them, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—has appeared to me and said: I have surely attended to you and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt.
ULT and I said,‘I will bring you up from affliction in Egypt to the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey.’”’ BSB BSB: And I have promised to bring you up out of your affliction in Egypt, into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites—a land flowing with milk and honey.’
ULT And they will listen to your voice. And you and the elders of Israel will go to the king of Egypt, and you all will say to him,‘Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. And now please let us go a journey of three days into the wilderness, and let us sacrifice to Yahweh, our God.’ BSB BSB: The elders of Israel will listen to what you say, and you must go with them to the king of Egypt and tell him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Now please let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness, so that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.’
ULT And I know that the king of Egypt will not permit you to go, and not with a strong hand. BSB BSB: But I know that the king of Egypt will not allow you to go unless a mighty hand compels him.
ULT And I shall send out my hand, and I shall strike Egypt with all my wonders, which I shall do within him. And after that, he will send you out. BSB BSB: So I will stretch out My hand and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders I will perform among them. And after that, he will release you.
ULT And I shall give this people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians, and it will be that when you go, you will not go emptily. BSB BSB: And I will grant this people such favor in the sight of the Egyptians that when you leave, you will not go away empty-handed.
ULT And a woman will ask from her neighbor and from one sojourning in her house for items of silver and items of gold and clothing. And you will put them on your sons and on your daughters, and you will plunder the Egyptians.” BSB BSB: Every woman shall ask her neighbor and any woman staying in her house for silver and gold jewelry and clothing, and you will put them on your sons and daughters. So you will plunder the Egyptians.”
