The Altar of Incense (Exodus 37:25–29)
1 ULT And you shall make an altar, a place of burning of incense. You shall make it with wood of acacias, BSB BSB: “You are also to make an altar of acacia wood for the burning of incense.
2 ULT Its length shall be one cubit and its width shall be one cubit. It shall be square, and its height shall be two cubits. Its horns{ shall be} part of it. BSB BSB: It is to be square, a cubit long, a cubit wide, and two cubits high. Its horns must be of one piece.
3 ULT And you shall overlay it with pure gold— its top and all around its sides and its horns— and you shall make for it a border of gold around it. BSB BSB: Overlay with pure gold the top and all the sides and horns, and make a molding of gold around it.
4 ULT And you shall make two rings of gold for it under its border on its two sides. You shall make them on its two sides. They will be housings for the poles for carrying it with. BSB BSB: And make two gold rings below the molding on opposite sides to hold the poles used to carry it.
5 ULT And you shall make the poles of wood of acacias, and you shall overlay them with gold. BSB BSB: Make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold.
6 ULT And you shall place it before the face of the curtain that is over the Box of the Testimony. It shall be before the face of the atonement lid that is over the Testimony, where I will meet with you. BSB BSB: Place the altar in front of the veil that is before the ark of the Testimony—before the mercy seat that is over the Testimony—where I will meet with you.
7 ULT And Aaron shall cause smoke on it, incense of fragrance. Morning by morning, when he makes the lamps good, he shall cause it to smoke, BSB BSB: And Aaron is to burn fragrant incense on it every morning when he tends the lamps.
8 ULT and when Aaron lifts up the lamps between the evenings, he will make it smoke. Incense will be continually before the face of Yahweh throughout your generations. BSB BSB: When Aaron sets up the lamps at twilight, he must burn the incense perpetually before the LORD for the generations to come.
9 ULT You shall not offer up strange incense or a burnt offering or a grain offering on it. And you shall not pour a drink offering on it. BSB BSB: On this altar you must not offer unauthorized incense or a burnt offering or grain offering; nor are you to pour a drink offering on it.
10 ULT And Aaron shall make atonement on its horns once a year. From the blood of the purification of the atonement once a year he shall make atonement for it throughout your generations. It is a holiest holy thing to Yahweh.” BSB BSB: Once a year Aaron shall make atonement on the horns of the altar. Throughout your generations he shall make atonement on it annually with the blood of the sin offering of atonement. The altar is most holy to the LORD.”
The Census Offering (2 Samuel 24:1–9; 1 Chronicles 21:1–6)
11 ULT And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
12 ULT “When you lift up the head of the sons of Israel to count them, then each man shall give the ransom of his life to Yahweh when counting them. And there will not be a plague among them when counting them. BSB BSB: “When you take a census of the Israelites to number them, each man must pay the LORD a ransom for his life when he is counted. Then no plague will come upon them when they are numbered.
13 ULT Every passer over to the counted ones shall give this: half of a shekel, according to the shekel of the sanctuary(the shekel is 20 gerahs). The half shekel is an offering to Yahweh. BSB BSB: Everyone who crosses over to those counted must pay a half shekel, according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty gerahs. This half shekel is an offering to the LORD.
14 ULT Every passer over to the counted ones, from a son of 20 years and up, shall give the contribution of Yahweh. BSB BSB: Everyone twenty years of age or older who crosses over must give this offering to the LORD.
15 ULT The rich shall not increase, and the poor shall not decrease from the half- shekel for giving the contribution of Yahweh to cover over your lives. BSB BSB: In making the offering to the LORD to atone for your lives, the rich shall not give more than a half shekel, nor shall the poor give less.
16 ULT And you shall take the silver of ransoms from the sons of Israel, and you shall give it to the work of the tent of meeting. And it shall be as a reminder for the sons of Israel before the face of Yahweh to cover over your lives.” BSB BSB: Take the atonement money from the Israelites and use it for the service of the Tent of Meeting. It will serve as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD to make atonement for your lives.”
The Bronze Basin (Exodus 38:8)
17 ULT And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: And the LORD said to Moses,
18 ULT “And you shall make a basin of bronze and its base of bronze for washing. And you shall put it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and you shall put water in it. BSB BSB: “You are to make a bronze basin with a bronze stand for washing. Set it between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and put water in it,
19 ULT And Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet in it. BSB BSB: with which Aaron and his sons are to wash their hands and feet.
20 ULT When they go into the tent of meeting, they shall wash with water, and they will not die. Also when they go near to the altar to serve by causing a fire offering to Yahweh to smoke, BSB BSB: Whenever they enter the Tent of Meeting or approach the altar to minister by presenting a food offering to the LORD, they must wash with water so that they will not die.
21 ULT then they shall wash their hands and their feet, and they will not die. And this shall be a statute forever for them, for him and his offspring throughout their generations.” BSB BSB: Thus they are to wash their hands and feet so that they will not die; this shall be a permanent statute for Aaron and his descendants for the generations to come.”
The Anointing Oil 22 ULT And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
23 ULT “As for you, take the best spices: myrrh of flowing, 500, and cinnamon of fragrance, its half, 250, and cane of fragrance, 250, BSB BSB: “Take the finest spices: 500 shekels of liquid myrrh, half that amount (250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels of fragrant cane,
24 ULT and cassia, 500,— according to the shekel of the sanctuary— and oil of olive, a hin. BSB BSB: 500 shekels of cassia—all according to the sanctuary shekel—and a hin of olive oil.
25 ULT And you shall make it{ into} an oil of anointment of holiness, an ointment from an ointment mixture, the work of an ointment mixer. It shall be an oil of anointment of holiness. BSB BSB: Prepare from these a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer; it will be a sacred anointing oil.
26 ULT And you shall anoint with it the tent of meeting and the Box of the Testimony BSB BSB: Use this oil to anoint the Tent of Meeting, the ark of the Testimony,
27 ULT and the table and all of its utensils and the lampstand and its equipment and the altar of incense BSB BSB: the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and its utensils, the altar of incense,
28 ULT and the altar of burnt offerings and all of its equipment and the basin and its stand. BSB BSB: the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the basin with its stand.
29 ULT And you shall set them apart, and they will be holiest holy things. Anything that touches them will be set apart. BSB BSB: You are to consecrate them so that they will be most holy. Whatever touches them shall be holy.
30 ULT And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons and set them apart to be priests to me. BSB BSB: Anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them to serve Me as priests.
31 ULT And you shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying,‘This will be my oil of anointment of holiness throughout your generations. BSB BSB: And you are to tell the Israelites, ‘This will be My sacred anointing oil for the generations to come.
32 ULT It shall not be poured on the body of a man, and you shall not make anything like it with its formula. It is holy; it shall be holy to you. BSB BSB: It must not be used to anoint an ordinary man, and you must not make anything like it with the same formula. It is holy, and it must be holy to you.
33 ULT A man that mixes its like or that puts any of it on a stranger shall be cut off from his people.’” BSB BSB: Anyone who mixes perfume like it or puts it on an outsider shall be cut off from his people.’”
The Incense 34 ULT And Yahweh said to Moses,“Take to yourself spices— stacte, and onycha, and galbanum— spices and pure frankincense. They shall each be in equal amounts. BSB BSB: The LORD also said to Moses, “Take fragrant spices—gum resin, onycha, galbanum, and pure frankincense—in equal measures,
35 ULT And you shall make it{ into} incense, an ointment, the work of an ointment mixer: salted, pure, holy. BSB BSB: and make a fragrant blend of incense, the work of a perfumer, seasoned with salt, pure and holy.
36 ULT And you shall pulverize some of it until pulverized. And you shall put some of it before the face of the testimony in the tent of meeting, where I will meet with you. It will be a holiest holy thing to you. BSB BSB: Grind some of it into fine powder and place it in front of the Testimony in the Tent of Meeting, where I will meet with you. It shall be most holy to you.
37 ULT And the incense that you will make, you shall not make{ any} with its formula for yourselves. It must be holy to Yahweh for you. BSB BSB: You are never to use this formula to make incense for yourselves; you shall regard it as holy to the LORD.
38 ULT A man that makes its like to smell it shall be cut off from his people.” BSB BSB: Anyone who makes something like it to enjoy its fragrance shall be cut off from his people.”
