The Tower of Babel (Deuteronomy 32:8; Acts 2:1–13)
ULT Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. BSB BSB: Now the whole world had one language and a common form of speech.
ULT And it happened as they migrated from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. BSB BSB: And as people journeyed eastward, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
ULT Then they said to each other,“Come, let us make bricks and bake them with fire.” And they had bricks for stones, and they had tar for mortar. BSB BSB: And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” So they used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of mortar.
ULT Then they said,“Come, let us build a city for ourselves and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, so that we are not scattered over the face of the whole earth.” BSB BSB: “Come,” they said, “let us build for ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens, that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of all the earth.”
ULT Then Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of mankind had built. BSB BSB: Then the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men were building.
ULT And Yahweh said,“Behold,{ they are} one people, and they all have one language. So this{ is} what they have begun to do, and now everything that they plan to do will not be impossible for them. BSB BSB: And the LORD said, “If they have begun to do this as one people speaking the same language, then nothing they devise will be beyond them.
ULT Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand each other’ s language.” BSB BSB: Come, let Us go down and confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
ULT Then Yahweh scattered them from there over the face of the whole earth, and they stopped building the city. BSB BSB: So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
ULT For that{ reason} they called its name Babel, because there Yahweh confused the language of the whole earth, and from there Yahweh scattered them over the face of the whole earth. BSB BSB: That is why it is called Babel, for there the LORD confused the language of the whole world, and from that place the LORD scattered them over the face of all the earth.
