Hagar and Ishmael 2 ULT So Sarai said to Abram,“Behold please, Yahweh has prevented me from bearing{ children}. Please go to my maidservant. Perhaps I can be built up from her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. BSB BSB: So Sarai said to Abram, “Look now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go to my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
ULT So Sarai, the wife of Abram, took Hagar, her Egyptian maidservant, at the end of ten years that Abram had lived in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife for him. BSB BSB: So after he had lived in Canaan for ten years, his wife Sarai took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to Abram to be his wife.
ULT Then he went to Hagar, and she conceived. And she saw that she had conceived, and her mistress was despised in her eyes. BSB BSB: And he slept with Hagar, and she conceived. But when Hagar realized that she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.
ULT Then Sarai said to Abram,“My wrong{ is} on you! I myself put my maidservant into your arms, but she sees that she has conceived, and I am despised in her eyes! May Yahweh judge between me and you!” BSB BSB: Then Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you! I delivered my servant into your arms, and ever since she saw that she was pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me.”
ULT Then Abram said to Sarai,“Behold, your maidservant{ is} in your hand. Do to her what{ is} good in your eyes.” Then Sarai afflicted her, and she fled from her face. BSB BSB: “Here,” said Abram, “your servant is in your hands. Do whatever you want with her.” Then Sarai treated Hagar so harshly that she fled from her.
ULT And he said,“Hagar, maidservant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?” And she said,“I am fleeing from the face of Sarai, my mistress.” BSB BSB: “Hagar, servant of Sarai,” he said, “where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I am running away from my mistress Sarai,” she replied.
ULT Then the angel of Yahweh said to her,“Return to your mistress and submit under her hands.” BSB BSB: So the angel of the LORD told her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her authority.”
ULT Then the angel of Yahweh said to her,“I will greatly increase your offspring, so that they cannot be counted, because of their abundance.” BSB BSB: Then the angel added, “I will greatly multiply your offspring so that they will be too numerous to count.”
ULT Then the angel of Yahweh said to her,“Behold,{ you are} pregnant, and you will bear a son, and you will call his name Ishmael, because Yahweh has listened to your misery. BSB BSB: The angel of the LORD proceeded: “Behold, you have conceived and will bear a son. And you shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction.
ULT And he will be a wild donkey of a man, his hand against everyone and the hand of everyone against him, and he will live in the faces of all of his brothers.” BSB BSB: He will be a wild donkey of a man, and his hand will be against everyone, and everyone’s hand against him; he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”
ULT Then she called the name of Yahweh who had spoken to her,“You{ are} El Roi,” because she said,“Have I really seen here the back of{ the one who} sees me?” BSB BSB: So Hagar gave this name to the LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “Here I have seen the One who sees me!”
ULT For that{ reason} they call the well Beer Lahai Roi. Behold,{ it is} between Kadesh and Bered. BSB BSB: Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi. It is located between Kadesh and Bered.
ULT Then Hagar bore a son for Abram, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. BSB BSB: And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne.
ULT And Abram{ was} a son of 86 years when Hagar bore Ishmael for Abram. BSB BSB: Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him.
