ULT And Jacob’ s anger burned against Rachel, and he said,“Am I in the place of God, who has kept the fruit of the womb from you?” BSB BSB: Jacob became angry with Rachel and said, “Am I in the place of God, who has withheld children from you?”
ULT Then she said,“Behold my slave woman Bilhah. Go to her so that she will bear{ children} on my knees, and I also will be built up from her.” BSB BSB: Then she said, “Here is my maidservant Bilhah. Sleep with her, that she may bear children for me, so that through her I too can build a family.”
ULT And she gave to him Bilhah her maidservant as a wife, and Jacob went to her. BSB BSB: So Rachel gave Jacob her servant Bilhah as a wife, and he slept with her,

Gad and Asher 9 ULT Now Leah saw that she had ceased from bearing{ children}, so she took Zilpah her maidservant and gave her to Jacob as a wife. BSB BSB: When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she gave her servant Zilpah to Jacob as a wife.
ULT Then Zilpah the maidservant of Leah bore a son for Jacob, BSB BSB: And Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.
ULT and Leah said,“What good fortune!” So she called his name Gad. BSB BSB: Then Leah said, “How fortunate!” So she named him Gad.
ULT Then Zilpah the maidservant of Leah bore a second son for Jacob, BSB BSB: When Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son,
ULT and Leah said,“How blessed I am! For women will call me blessed.” So she called his name Asher. BSB BSB: Leah said, “How happy I am! For the women call me happy.” So she named him Asher.
ULT Then in the days of the wheat harvest, Reuben went out and found mandrakes in the field, and he brought them to Leah his mother. Then Rachel said to Leah,“Please give to me some of your son’ s mandrakes.” BSB BSB: Now during the wheat harvest, Reuben went out and found some mandrakes in the field. When he brought them to his mother, Rachel begged Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”
ULT But she said to her,“Is it a small matter you have taken my husband? And would you also take my son’ s mandrakes?” Then Rachel said,“Therefore he may lie with you tonight for your son’ s mandrakes.” BSB BSB: But Leah replied, “Is it not enough that you have taken away my husband? Now you want to take my son’s mandrakes as well?” “Very well,” said Rachel, “he may sleep with you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.”
ULT Then Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him and said,“You must come to me, because I have surely hired you with my son’ s mandrakes.” So he lay with her during that night, BSB BSB: When Jacob came in from the field that evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come with me, for I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he slept with her that night.
Issachar, Zebulun, and Dinah 17 ULT and God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore a fifth son for Jacob. BSB BSB: And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore a fifth son to Jacob.
ULT Then Leah said,“God has given{ me} my reward because I gave my maidservant to my husband.” So she called his name Issachar. BSB BSB: Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my maidservant to my husband.” So she named him Issachar.
ULT Then Leah conceived again and bore a sixth son for Jacob. BSB BSB: Again Leah conceived and bore a sixth son to Jacob.
ULT And Leah said,“God has presented me a good present. This time my husband will honor me because I have born six sons for him.” So she called his name Zebulun. BSB BSB: “God has given me a good gift,” she said. “This time my husband will honor me, because I have borne him six sons.” And she named him Zebulun.
ULT Then later she bore a daughter and called her name Dinah. BSB BSB: After that, Leah gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.
Joseph 22 ULT Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb. BSB BSB: Then God remembered Rachel. He listened to her and opened her womb,
ULT Then she conceived and bore a son, and she said,“God has taken away my disgrace!” BSB BSB: and she conceived and gave birth to a son. “God has taken away my shame,” she said.
ULT And she called his name Joseph, saying,“May Yahweh add another son to me.” BSB BSB: She named him Joseph, and said, “May the LORD add to me another son.”
Jacob Prospers 25 ULT Then it happened, after Rachel bore Joseph, then Jacob said to Laban,“Send me off, so that I may go to my place and to my land. BSB BSB: Now after Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way so I can return to my homeland.
ULT Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served you, so that I may go. For you yourself know my service that I have served you.” BSB BSB: Give me my wives and children for whom I have served you, that I may go on my way. You know how hard I have worked for you.”
ULT Then Laban said to him,“Please{ stay}, if I have found favor in your eyes. I have learned by divination that Yahweh has blessed me because of you.” BSB BSB: But Laban replied, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by divination that the LORD has blessed me because of you.”
ULT Then he said,“Name your wages to me, and I will give{ them}.” BSB BSB: And he added, “Name your wages, and I will pay them.”
ULT And he said to him,“You yourself know how I have served you and how your livestock have been with me. BSB BSB: Then Jacob answered, “You know how I have served you and how your livestock have thrived under my care.
ULT For{ there was} little that was yours before me, and it has prospered to abundance, and Yahweh has blessed you at my feet. But now, when will I also do something for my household?” BSB BSB: Indeed, you had very little before my arrival, but now your wealth has increased many times over. The LORD has blessed you wherever I set foot. But now, when may I also provide for my own household?”
ULT Then he said,“What should I give to you?” And Jacob said,“Do not give anything to me. If you will do this thing for me, I will continue tending your flock{ s} watching over{ them}: BSB BSB: “What can I give you?” Laban asked. “You do not need to give me anything,” Jacob replied. “If you do this one thing for me, I will keep on shepherding and keeping your flocks.
ULT I will pass through all your flock{ s} today to remove from there every speckled and spotted lamb and every dark- colored lamb among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled{ young} among the goats. And that will be my wages. BSB BSB: Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb, and every spotted or speckled goat. These will be my wages.
ULT So my righteousness will testify for me in future days when you go over my wages in front of you: any that is not speckled and spotted among the goats and dark- colored among the sheep, it was stolen{ if it is} with me.” BSB BSB: So my honesty will testify for me when you come to check on my wages in the future. If I have any goats that are not speckled or spotted, or any lambs that are not dark-colored, they will be considered stolen.”
ULT And Laban said,“Behold, let it be according to your word.” BSB BSB: “Agreed,” said Laban. “Let it be as you have said.”
ULT Then on that day he removed the male goats that were streaked and spotted, and all the female goats that were speckled and spotted, any that{ had} white on it, and all the dark- colored{ ones} among the lambs. Then he gave{ them} into the hand of his sons, BSB BSB: That very day Laban removed all the streaked or spotted male goats and every speckled or spotted female goat—every one that had any white on it—and every dark-colored lamb, and he placed them under the care of his sons.
ULT and he put a three- day journey between himself and Jacob. And Jacob was tending the rest of Laban’ s flock{ s}. BSB BSB: Then he put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob was shepherding the rest of Laban’s flocks.
ULT Then Jacob took for himself fresh- cut branches of poplar and almond and plane trees, and peeled white stripes in them, exposing the white that{ was} inside the branches. BSB BSB: Jacob, however, took fresh branches of poplar, almond, and plane trees, and peeled the bark, exposing the white inner wood of the branches.
ULT Then he put the branches that he had peeled in the troughs, in the water troughs where the flock{ s} came to drink, in front of the flock{ s}. And they were in heat when they came to drink, BSB BSB: Then he set the peeled branches in the watering troughs in front of the flocks coming in to drink. So when the flocks were in heat and came to drink,
ULT and the flock{ s} would mate by the branches, and the flock{ s} would bear streaked, speckled, and spotted{ young}. BSB BSB: they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.
ULT Then Jacob set apart the lambs, and he made the faces of the flock{ s} look at the streaked and all the dark- colored{ animals} in the flock{ s} of Laban. And he put flocks for himself by themselves, and he did not put them with the flock{ s} of Laban. BSB BSB: Jacob set apart the young, but made the rest face the streaked dark-colored sheep in Laban’s flocks. Then he set his own stock apart and did not put them with Laban’s animals.
ULT So it happened whenever the strong animals were in heat, then Jacob put the branches in the troughs before the eyes of the flocks so that they would mate by the branches. BSB BSB: Whenever the stronger females of the flock were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs, in full view of the animals, so that they would breed in front of the branches.
ULT But when the animals were weak, he did not put{ them}{ in}. So it was the weak{ ones}{ went} to Laban, and the strong{ ones} to Jacob, BSB BSB: But if the animals were weak, he did not set out the branches. So the weaker animals went to Laban and the stronger ones to Jacob.
ULT so that the man prospered very greatly, and he owned large flock{ s}, and maidservants and menservants and camels and donkeys. BSB BSB: Thus Jacob became exceedingly prosperous. He owned large flocks, maidservants and menservants, and camels and donkeys.
