Cain and Abel (Hebrews 11:4)
ULT Then the man knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain. And she said,“I have obtained a man with Yahweh!” BSB BSB: And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man,” she said.
ULT Then she continued on to bear his brother Abel. Now Abel became a keeper of flock{ s}, and Cain became a worker of the ground. BSB BSB: Later she gave birth to Cain’s brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, while Cain was a tiller of the soil.
ULT And it happened in the course of days that Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground{ as} an offering to Yahweh. BSB BSB: So in the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD,
ULT And Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock{ s} and some of their fat. And Yahweh looked{ favorably} on Abel and his offering. BSB BSB: while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
ULT But he did not look{ favorably} on Cain and his offering. So Cain burned with intense anger, and his face fell. BSB BSB: but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell.
ULT Then Yahweh said to Cain,“Why are you burning with anger? And why is your face fallen? BSB BSB: “Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen?
ULT If you do right, will{ you} not{ be} accepted? But if you do not do right, sin is crouching at the door, and its desire{ is} for you, but you must rule over it.” BSB BSB: If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.”
ULT Then Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And it happened while they were in the field, then Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. BSB BSB: Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
ULT Then Yahweh said to Cain,“Where{ is} Abel your brother?” And he replied,“I do not know. Am I my brother’ s keeper?” BSB BSB: And the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I do not know!” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
ULT Then he said,“What have you done? The voice of your brother’ s blood is crying out to me from the ground! BSB BSB: “What have you done?” replied the LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.
ULT So now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’ s blood from your hand. BSB BSB: Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
ULT When you work the ground, it will not continue to yield its strength for you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” BSB BSB: When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”
ULT Then Cain said to Yahweh,“My punishment{ is} greater than I can bear. BSB BSB: But Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
ULT Behold, today you are driving me from the surface of the ground, and I will be hidden from your presence. And I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and it will be{ that} everyone who finds me will kill me!” BSB BSB: Behold, this day You have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
ULT Then Yahweh said to him,“For that{ reason}, anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over!” Then Yahweh put a mark on Cain so that everyone who found him would not strike him. BSB BSB: “Not so!” replied the LORD. “If anyone slays Cain, then Cain will be avenged sevenfold.” And the LORD placed a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would kill him.
ULT Then Cain went away from the presence of Yahweh and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. BSB BSB: So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
The Descendants of Cain 17 ULT Then Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he was building a city, so he called the name of the city after the name of his son Enoch. BSB BSB: And Cain had relations with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain built a city and named it after his son Enoch.
ULT Then to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech. BSB BSB: Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methusael, and Methusael was the father of Lamech.
ULT Then Lamech took for himself two wives. The name of the one{ was} Adah, and the name of the second{ was} Zillah. BSB BSB: And Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.
ULT And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of{ those} who live{ in} tents and own livestock. BSB BSB: Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and raise livestock.
ULT And the name of his brother{ was} Jubal. He was the father of all who play harps and flutes. BSB BSB: And his brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
ULT And Zillah also bore Tubal Cain, who forged all{ kinds} of tools out of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal Cain{ was} Naamah. BSB BSB: And Zillah gave birth to Tubal-cain, a forger of every implement of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
ULT And Lamech said to his wives,“Adah and Zillah, hear my voice. Wives of Lamech, give ear to my word{ s}: For I killed a man for my wound, even a young man for my bruise. BSB BSB: Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me.
ULT If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech{ is avenged} seventy- seven times!” BSB BSB: If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”
Seth and Enosh 25 ULT Then Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son, and she called his name Seth, because{ she had said},“God has appointed for me another offspring in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” BSB BSB: And Adam again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another seed in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”
ULT And to Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. Then{ people} began to call on the name of Yahweh. BSB BSB: And to Seth also a son was born, and he called him Enosh. At that time men began to call upon the name of the LORD.
