ULT Now early in the morning he came to the temple again, and all the people came to him. BSB BSB: Early in the morning He went back into the temple courts. All the people came to Him, and He sat down to teach them.
ULT Now the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and they placed her in the middle. BSB BSB: The scribes and Pharisees, however, brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before them
ULT The priests say to him, testing him in order to have an accusation against him,“Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. BSB BSB: and said, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
ULT Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such ones, but what do you say now?” BSB BSB: In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such a woman. So what do You say?”
ULT But Jesus, having bent down, began to write on the ground with his finger. BSB BSB: They said this to test Him, in order to have a basis for accusing Him. But Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with His finger.
ULT But when they continued asking him questions, he stood up and said to them,“Let the blameless one among you throw a stone at her first.” BSB BSB: When they continued to question Him, He straightened up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her.”
ULT And again, having stooped down, he wrote on the ground with his finger. BSB BSB: And again He bent down and wrote on the ground.
ULT But each of the Jews went out, beginning with the oldest, so that they all went out, and he was left alone, with the woman being in the midst. BSB BSB: When they heard this, they began to go away one by one, beginning with the older ones, until only Jesus was left, with the woman standing there.
ULT And Jesus, having stood up, said to the woman,“Where are they? Did no one condemn you?” BSB BSB: Then Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you?”
ULT And she said to him,“No one, Lord.” And he said,“Neither do I condemn you. Go, from now sin no longer.”] BSB BSB: “No one, Lord,” she answered. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Now go and sin no more.”
Jesus the Light of the World (1 John 1:5–10)
ULT Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying,“I am the light of the world; the one following me may certainly not walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.” BSB BSB: Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
ULT Then the Pharisees said to him,“You testify about yourself; your testimony is not true.” BSB BSB: So the Pharisees said to Him, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not valid.”
ULT Jesus answered and said to them,“Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true. For I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I came from or where I am going. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is valid, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I came from or where I am going.
ULT You judge according to the flesh; I do not judge anyone. BSB BSB: You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.
ULT But even if I judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father having sent me. BSB BSB: But even if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone; I am with the Father who sent Me.
ULT But even in your law it is written that the testimony of two men is true. BSB BSB: Even in your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid.
ULT I am the one testifying about myself, and the Father having sent me testifies about me.” BSB BSB: I am One who testifies about Myself, and the Father, who sent Me, also testifies about Me.”
ULT Therefore, they said to him,“Where is your father?” Jesus answered,“You know neither me nor my Father; if you had known me, you would have known my Father also.” BSB BSB: “Where is Your Father?” they asked Him. “You do not know Me or My Father,” Jesus answered. “If you knew Me, you would know My Father as well.”
ULT He said these words in the treasury, teaching in the temple, and no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. BSB BSB: He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts, near the treasury. Yet no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.
ULT Then again he said to them,“I go away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go away, you are not able to come.” BSB BSB: Again He said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for Me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”
ULT Then the Jews said,“He will not kill himself, will he? Is that why he says,‘Where I go, you are not able to come’?” BSB BSB: So the Jews began to ask, “Will He kill Himself, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”
ULT And he said to them,“You are from the things below; I am from the things above. You are from this world; I am not from this world. BSB BSB: Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
ULT Therefore, I said to you that you will die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am, you will die in your sins.” BSB BSB: That is why I told you that you would die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
ULT Therefore, they said to him,“Who are you?” Jesus said to them,“What have I even been saying to you from the beginning? BSB BSB: “Who are You?” they asked. “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied.
ULT I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you. But the one having sent me is true; and the things that I heard from him, these things I say to the world.” BSB BSB: “I have much to say about you and much to judge. But the One who sent Me is truthful, and what I have heard from Him, I tell the world.”
ULT (They did not understand that he was speaking to them about the Father.) BSB BSB: They did not understand that He was telling them about the Father.
ULT Then Jesus said to them,“When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then will you know that I am, and that I do nothing from myself. But just as the Father taught me, I speak these things. BSB BSB: So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing on My own, but speak exactly what the Father has taught Me.
ULT And the one having sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him.” BSB BSB: He who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him.”
The Truth Will Set You Free (2 John 1:4–6)
ULT { As} he is speaking these things, many believed in him. BSB BSB: As Jesus spoke these things, many believed in Him.
ULT Then Jesus said to the Jews having believed in him,“If you remain in my word, you are truly my disciples; BSB BSB: So He said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples.
ULT and you will know the truth, and the truth will free you.” BSB BSB: Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
ULT They replied to him,“We are the seed of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone; how can you say,‘You will be free’?” BSB BSB: “We are Abraham’s descendants,” they answered. “We have never been slaves to anyone. How can You say we will be set free?”
ULT Jesus answered them,“Truly, truly, I say to you, that everyone committing sin is a slave of sin. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
ULT Now the slave does not remain in the house into eternity; the son remains into eternity. BSB BSB: A slave does not remain in the house forever, but a son remains forever.
ULT Therefore, if the Son frees you, you will be truly free. BSB BSB: So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
ULT I know that you are the seed of Abraham, but you seek to kill me, because my word has no place in you. BSB BSB: I know you are Abraham’s descendants, but you are trying to kill Me because My word has no place within you.
ULT What I have seen with the Father, I say; and therefore, what you heard from the father, you do.” BSB BSB: I speak of what I have seen in the presence of the Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”
ULT They answered and said to him,“Our father is Abraham.” Jesus says to them,“If you were children of Abraham, you would do the works of Abraham. BSB BSB: “Abraham is our father,” they replied. “If you were children of Abraham,” said Jesus, “you would do the works of Abraham.
ULT But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. BSB BSB: But now you are trying to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing.
ULT You do the works of your father.” Then they said to him,“We have not been born from sexual immorality; we have one Father: God.” BSB BSB: You are doing the works of your father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they declared. “Our only Father is God Himself.”
ULT Jesus said to them,“If God were your Father, you would have loved me, for I came from God and am here; for neither have I come from myself, but that one sent me. BSB BSB: Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on My own, but He sent Me.
ULT Because of what do you not understand my speech? It is because you are not able to hear my words. BSB BSB: Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you are unable to accept My message.
ULT You are from your father, the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. That one was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he would speak a lie, he speaks from his own{ nature}, because he is a liar and the father of it. BSB BSB: You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 ULT But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me. BSB BSB: But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me!
ULT Which one of you convicts me concerning sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me? BSB BSB: Which of you can prove Me guilty of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe Me?
ULT He who is from God hears the words of God; because of this you do not hear, because you are not from God.” BSB BSB: Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Before Abraham Was Born, I Am 48 ULT The Jews answered and said to him,“Do we not rightly say that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” BSB BSB: The Jews answered Him, “Are we not right to say that You are a Samaritan and You have a demon?”
ULT Jesus answered,“I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. BSB BSB: “I do not have a demon,” Jesus replied, “but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.
ULT Now I do not seek my glory; there is one seeking and judging. BSB BSB: I do not seek My own glory. There is One who seeks it, and He is the Judge.
ULT Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will certainly not see death into eternity.” BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, if anyone keeps My word, he will never see death.”
ULT The Jews said to him,“Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham and the prophets died; but you say,‘If anyone keeps my word, he will certainly not taste death into eternity.’ BSB BSB: “Now we know that You have a demon!” declared the Jews. “Abraham died, and so did the prophets, yet You say that anyone who keeps Your word will never taste death.
ULT You are not greater than our father Abraham who died, are you? The prophets also died. Who do you make yourself out to be?” BSB BSB: Are You greater than our father Abraham? He died, as did the prophets. Who do You claim to be?”
ULT Jesus answered,“If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; my Father is the one glorifying me— about whom you say,‘He is our God.’ BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory means nothing. The One who glorifies Me is My Father, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’
ULT And you have not known him, but I know him. And if I would say that I do not know him, I would be like you, a liar. However, I know him and keep his word. BSB BSB: You do not know Him, but I know Him. If I said I did not know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know Him, and I keep His word.
ULT Therefore the Jews said to him,“You do not yet have 50 years, and you have seen Abraham?” BSB BSB: Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?”
ULT Jesus said to them,“Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham came into existence, I am.” BSB BSB: “Truly, truly, I tell you,” Jesus declared, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 ULT Therefore, they picked up stones in order to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out from the temple.
