Jonah Flees from the LORD (Nahum 1:1–15)
ULT And the word of Yahweh came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying, BSB BSB: Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying,
ULT “Get up, go to Nineveh, the great city, and call out against it, because their evil has risen up before my face.” BSB BSB: “Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before Me.”
ULT But Jonah got up to run away to Tarshish from before the face of Yahweh. And he went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish, away from before the face of Yahweh. BSB BSB: Jonah, however, got up to flee to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship bound for Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went aboard to sail for Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.
The Great Storm (Acts 27:13–26)
ULT But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea and a great storm happened on the sea, so that the ship was thinking to be broken apart. BSB BSB: Then the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship was in danger of breaking apart.
ULT Then the sailors were frightened, and they cried out, a man to his god. And they threw the things that were in the ship into the sea to lighten it from upon them. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship, and had lain down, and was deeply asleep. BSB BSB: The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the ship’s cargo into the sea to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.
ULT Then the captain of the crew came to him and said to him,“What to you, sleeping? Get up! Cry out to your god! Maybe that god will notice us, and we will not perish.” BSB BSB: The captain approached him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call upon your God. Perhaps this God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”
ULT Then they said, a man to his friend,“Come, and let us cast lots, so that we may know on whose account this evil is happening to us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. BSB BSB: “Come!” said the sailors to one another. “Let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity that is upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
ULT Then they said to him,“Please tell us on whose account this evil is happening to us. What is your occupation, and where do you come from? What is your country, and from which people are you?” BSB BSB: “Tell us now,” they demanded, “who is to blame for this calamity that is upon us? What is your occupation, and where have you come from? What is your country, and who are your people?”
ULT So he said to them,“I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.” BSB BSB: “I am a Hebrew,” replied Jonah. “I worship the LORD, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.”
ULT Then the men feared a great fear, and they said to him,“What is this that you have done?” For the men knew that he was running away from before the face of Yahweh, because he had told them. BSB BSB: Then the men were even more afraid and said to him, “What have you done?” The men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Jonah Cast into the Sea 11 ULT Then they said to him,“What should we do to you so that the sea will calm down from upon us?” For the sea was progressing and storming. BSB BSB: Now the sea was growing worse and worse, so they said to Jonah, “What must we do to you to calm this sea for us?”
ULT And he said to them,“Lift me up and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will calm down from upon you, for I know that this great storm is upon you because of me.” BSB BSB: “Pick me up,” he answered, “and cast me into the sea, so it may quiet down for you. For I know that I am to blame for this violent storm that has come upon you.”
ULT But the men rowed hard to return themselves to the land, but they could not, because the sea was progressing and storming over them. BSB BSB: Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea was raging against them more and more.
ULT So they cried out to Yahweh and said,“Ah! Yahweh, please do not let us perish on account of the life of this man, and do not put innocent blood upon us, because you, Yahweh, have done just as you desired.” BSB BSB: So they cried out to the LORD: “Please, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life! Do not charge us with innocent blood! For You, O LORD, have done as You pleased.”
ULT So they lifted up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. BSB BSB: Then they picked up Jonah and cast him into the sea, and the raging sea grew calm.
ULT Then the men feared Yahweh{ with} great fear, and they sacrificed a sacrifice to Yahweh and vowed vows. BSB BSB: Then the men feared the LORD greatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to Him.
