Forty-Eight Cities for the Levites (Numbers 35:1–8; 1 Chronicles 6:54–81)
1 ULT And the heads of the fathers of the Levites came near to Eleazar the priest and to Joshua, the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the sons of Israel. BSB BSB: Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribes of Israel
2 ULT And they spoke to them in Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying,“Yahweh commanded by the hand of Moses to give to us cities to dwell in, with their pasturelands for our livestock.” BSB BSB: at Shiloh in the land of Canaan and said to them, “The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given cities in which to live, together with pasturelands for our livestock.”
3 ULT And the sons of Israel gave to the Levites from their inheritance these cities and their pasturelands, upon the mouth of Yahweh. BSB BSB: So by the command of the LORD, the Israelites gave the Levites these cities and their pasturelands out of their own inheritance:
4 ULT And the lot came out for the clans of the Kohathite. And for the sons of Aaron the priest, from the Levites, there were 13 cities by the lot from the tribe of Judah and from the tribe of the Simeonite and from the tribe of Benjamin. BSB BSB: The first lot came out for the Kohathite clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.
5 ULT And for the remaining sons of Kohath, ten cities by the lot from the clans of the tribe of Ephraim and from the tribe of Dan and from half of the tribe of Manasseh. BSB BSB: The remaining descendants of Kohath received ten cities by lot from the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
6 ULT And for the sons of Gershon, 13 cities by the lot from the clans of the tribe of Issachar and from the tribe of Asher and from the tribe of Naphtali and from the half of the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan. BSB BSB: The descendants of Gershon received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.
7 ULT For the sons of Merari according to their clans, 12 cities from the tribe of Reuben and from the tribe of Gad and from the tribe of Zebulun. BSB BSB: And the descendants of Merari received twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.
8 ULT And the sons of Israel gave these cities and their pasturelands to the Levites by the lot, just as Yahweh had commanded by the hand of Moses. BSB BSB: So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these cities, together with their pasturelands, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
9 ULT And from the tribe of the sons of Judah and from the tribe of the sons of Simeon they gave these cities, which one calls them by name. BSB BSB: From the tribes of Judah and Simeon, they designated these cities by name
10 ULT And they were for the sons of Aaron from the clans of the Kohathite from the sons of Levi, because the first lot was for them. BSB BSB: to the descendants of Aaron from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because the first lot fell to them:
11 ULT And they gave to them Kiriath Arba(the father of the Anak, it is Hebron) in the hill country of Judah and its pasturelands around it. BSB BSB: They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), with its surrounding pasturelands, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the father of Anak.)
12 ULT But the field of the city and its villages they had given to Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, as his possession. BSB BSB: But they had given the fields and villages around the city to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.
13 ULT And to the sons of Aaron the priest they gave a city of refuge of one having killed, Hebron and its pasturelands, and Libnah and its pasturelands BSB BSB: So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave these cities, together with their pasturelands: Hebron, a city of refuge for the manslayer, Libnah,
14 ULT and Jattir and its pasturelands and Eshtemoa and its pasturelands BSB BSB: Jattir, Eshtemoa,
15 ULT and Holon and its pasturelands and Debir and its pasturelands BSB BSB: Holon, Debir,
16 ULT and Ain and its pasturelands and Juttah and its pasturelands and Beth Shemesh and its pasturelands: nine cities from the two of these tribes. BSB BSB: Ain, Juttah, and Beth-shemesh—nine cities from these two tribes, together with their pasturelands.
17 ULT And from the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon and its pasturelands, Geba and its pasturelands, BSB BSB: And from the tribe of Benjamin they gave them Gibeon, Geba,
18 ULT Anathoth and its pasturelands, and Almon and its pasturelands: four cities. BSB BSB: Anathoth, and Almon—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
19 ULT All of the cities of the sons of Aaron, the priests,{ were} 13 cities and their pasturelands. BSB BSB: In all, thirteen cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
20 ULT And for the clans of the sons of Kohath, the Levites, the remaining ones from the sons of Kohath, the cities of their lot{ were} from the tribe of Ephraim. BSB BSB: The remaining Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted these cities: From the tribe of Ephraim
21 ULT And they gave to them a city of refuge of one having killed, Shechem and its pasturelands in the hill country of Ephraim, and Gezer and its pasturelands BSB BSB: they were given Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim (a city of refuge for the manslayer), Gezer,
22 ULT and Kibzaim and its pasturelands and Beth Horon and its pasturelands: four cities. BSB BSB: Kibzaim, and Beth-horon—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
23 ULT And from the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh and its pasturelands, Gibbethon and its pasturelands, BSB BSB: From the tribe of Dan they were given Elteke, Gibbethon,
24 ULT Aijalon and its pasturelands, Gath Rimmon and its pasturelands: four cities. BSB BSB: Aijalon, and Gath-rimmon—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
25 ULT And from half of the tribe of Manasseh, Taanach and its pasturelands and Gath Rimmon and its pasturelands: two cities. BSB BSB: And from the half-tribe of Manasseh they were given Taanach and Gath-rimmon—two cities, together with their pasturelands.
26 ULT All of the ten cities and their pasturelands{ were} for the remaining clans of the sons of Kohath. BSB BSB: In all, ten cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans.
27 ULT And for the sons of Gershon from the clans of the Levites, from half of the tribe of Manasseh, a city of refuge of one having killed, Golan in Bashan and its pasturelands, and Be Eshterah and its pasturelands: two cities. BSB BSB: This is what the Levite clans of the Gershonites were given: From the half-tribe of Manasseh they were given Golan in Bashan, a city of refuge for the manslayer, and Beeshterah—two cities, together with their pasturelands.
28 ULT And from the tribe of Issachar, Kishion and its pasturelands, Daberath and its pasturelands, BSB BSB: From the tribe of Issachar they were given Kishion, Daberath,
29 ULT Jarmuth and its pasturelands, En Gannim and its pasturelands: four cities. BSB BSB: Jarmuth, and En-gannim—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
30 ULT And from the tribe of Asher, Mishal and its pasturelands, Abdon and its pasturelands, BSB BSB: From the tribe of Asher they were given Mishal, Abdon,
31 ULT Helkath and its pasturelands, and Rehob and its pasturelands: four cities. BSB BSB: Helkath, and Rehob—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
32 ULT And from the tribe of Naphtali, a city of refuge of one having killed, Kedesh in Galilee and its pasturelands, and Hammoth Dor and its pasturelands and Kartan and its pasturelands: three cities. BSB BSB: And from the tribe of Naphtali they were given Kedesh in Galilee (a city of refuge for the manslayer), Hammoth-dor, and Kartan—three cities, together with their pasturelands.
33 ULT All of the cities of the Gershonite according to their clans{ were} 13 cities and their pasturelands. BSB BSB: In all, thirteen cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the Gershonite clans.
34 ULT And for the clans of the sons of Merari, the remaining Levites, from the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam and its pasturelands, Kartah and its pasturelands, BSB BSB: This is what the Merarite clan (the rest of the Levites) were given: From the tribe of Zebulun they were given Jokneam, Kartah,
35 ULT Dimnah and its pasturelands, Nahalal and its pasturelands: four cities. BSB BSB: Dimnah, and Nahalal—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
36 ULT And from the tribe of Reuben, Bezer and its pasturelands and Jahaz and its pasturelands, BSB BSB: From the tribe of Reuben they were given Bezer, Jahaz,
37 ULT Kedemoth and its pasturelands and Mephaath and its pasturelands: four cities. BSB BSB: Kedemoth, and Mephaath—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
38 ULT And from the tribe of Gad, a city of refuge of one having killed, Ramoth in Gilead and its pasturelands, and Mahanaim and its pasturelands, BSB BSB: And from the tribe of Gad they were given Ramoth in Gilead, a city of refuge for the manslayer, Mahanaim,
39 ULT Heshbon and its pasturelands, Jazer and its pasturelands: all of the cities{ were} four. BSB BSB: Heshbon, and Jazer—four cities in all, together with their pasturelands.
40 ULT All of the cities for the sons of Merari according to their clans, the remaining ones from the clans of the Levites, were 12 cities{ by} their lot. BSB BSB: In all, twelve cities were allotted to the clans of Merari, the remaining Levite clans.
41 ULT All of the cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the sons of Israel{ were} 48 cities and their pasturelands. BSB BSB: For the Levites, then, there were forty-eight cities in all, together with their pasturelands, within the territory of the Israelites.
42 ULT These cities were city, city, and its pasturelands around it, thus for all of these cities. BSB BSB: Each of these cities had its own surrounding pasturelands; this was true for all the cities.
43 ULT And Yahweh gave to Israel all of the land that he had sworn to give to their fathers. And they possessed it and dwelled in it. BSB BSB: Thus the LORD gave Israel all the land He had sworn to give their fathers, and they took possession of it and settled in it.
44 ULT And Yahweh gave rest to them from all around, according to all that he had sworn to their fathers. And a man did not stand against their faces from all of their enemies. Yahweh gave all of their enemies into their hand. BSB BSB: And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as He had sworn to their fathers. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
45 ULT A word did not fall from every good word that Yahweh had spoken to the house of Israel. The whole came. BSB BSB: Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel had failed; everything was fulfilled.
