God’s Anger over Jerusalem 1 ULT How the Lord has covered with a cloud the daughter of Zion in his nose! He has cast from heaven to earth the splendor of Israel, and he did not remember the footstool of his feet on the day of his nose. BETH BSB BSB: How the Lord has covered the Daughter of Zion with the cloud of His anger! He has cast the glory of Israel from heaven to earth. He has abandoned His footstool in the day of His anger.
2 ULT The Lord has swallowed up; he did not spare all the pastures of Jacob. He has torn down in his wrath the fortifications of the daughter of Judah; he has brought{ them} to the ground. He has profaned the kingdom and her princes. GIMEL BSB BSB: Without pity the Lord has swallowed up all the dwellings of Jacob. In His wrath He has demolished the fortified cities of the Daughter of Judah. He brought to the ground and defiled her kingdom and its princes.
3 ULT He has cut off in the burning of nose every horn of Israel. He has turned back his right hand from the face of the enemy, and he burned in Jacob like a fire of flame consuming all around. DALETH BSB BSB: In fierce anger He has cut off every horn of Israel and withdrawn His right hand at the approach of the enemy. He has burned in Jacob like a flaming fire that consumes everything around it.
4 ULT He has bent his bow like an enemy; his right hand is stationed like an adversary, and he has slain all the delights of the eye. In the tent of the daughter of Zion, he has poured out his anger like fire. HE BSB BSB: He has bent His bow like an enemy; His right hand is positioned. 5 ULT The Lord has become like an enemy; he has swallowed up Israel. He has swallowed up all her citadels; he has destroyed his fortifications, and he has multiplied in the daughter of Judah mourning and groaning. 6 ULT And he has done violence like{ to} his garden booth; he has destroyed his appointed place. Yahweh has caused{ people} in Zion to forget appointed festival and Sabbath, and he has despised king and priest in the indignation of his nose. In His fierce anger He has despised both king and priest.
7 ULT The Lord has rejected his altar; he has abhorred his sanctuary. He has delivered up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces. They raised a shout in the house of Yahweh as on the day of an appointed festival. 8 ULT Yahweh planned to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion. He stretched out the measuring line; he did not turn back his hand from swallowing up. And he caused the rampart and wall to mourn; together they have languished. TETH BSB BSB: The LORD determined to destroy the wall of the Daughter of Zion. 9 ULT Her gates have sunk into the ground; he has destroyed and shattered her bars. Her king and her princes{ are} among the nations; there is no law. Also, her prophets do not find a vision from Yahweh. YODH BSB BSB: Her gates have sunk into the ground; He has destroyed and shattered their bars. 10 ULT They sit on the ground; the elders of the daughter of Zion are silent. They have thrown up dust on their heads; they have put on sackcloth. The virgins of Jerusalem have bowed their heads to the ground. KAPH BSB BSB: The elders of the Daughter of Zion sit on the ground in silence. 11 ULT My eyes have failed with tears; my inner parts churn. My liver is poured out to the ground over the destruction of the daughter of my people, when child and infant faint in the streets of the city. My heart is poured out in grief over the destruction of the daughter of my people, because children and infants faint in the streets of the city.
12 ULT To their mothers they say,“Where is grain and wine?” when they faint like the slain in the streets of the city, when their life is poured out in the lap of their mothers. MEM BSB BSB: They cry out to their mothers: “Where is the grain and wine?” as they faint like the wounded in the streets of the city, as their lives fade away in the arms of their mothers.
13 ULT What can I testify to you? To what can I compare you, O daughter of Jerusalem? To what can I liken you, that I may comfort you, O virgin daughter of Zion? For your brokenness is as great as the sea; who can heal you? NUN BSB BSB: What can I say for you? To what can I compare you, O Daughter of Jerusalem? To what can I liken you, that I may console you, O Virgin Daughter of Zion? For your wound is as deep as the sea. Who can ever heal you?
14 ULT Your prophets have seen for you falsehood and worthlessness, and they did not expose your iniquity to restore your fortunes. But they have seen for you oracles of falsehood and enticement. SAMEKH BSB BSB: The visions of your prophets were empty and deceptive; they did not expose your guilt to ward off your captivity. The burdens they envisioned for you were empty and misleading.
15 ULT All those passing along the road clap{ their} hands at you. They hiss and shake their heads at the daughter of Jerusalem:“Is this the city that they called‘the perfection of beauty, the joy of all the earth’?” AYIN BSB BSB: All who pass by clap their hands at you in scorn. They hiss and shake their heads at the Daughter of Jerusalem: “Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty, the joy of all the earth?”
16 ULT All your enemies have opened their mouths against you. They hiss and gnash{ their} teeth; they say,“We have swallowed{ her} up! Surely this is the day we waited for; we have found it, we have seen it!” PE BSB BSB: All your enemies open their mouths against you. They hiss and gnash their teeth, saying, “We have swallowed her up. This is the day for which we have waited. We have lived to see it!”
17 ULT Yahweh has done what he planned; he has fulfilled his word that he commanded from days of old. He has torn down and has not shown compassion, and he has made the enemy rejoice over you; he has lifted up the horn of your adversaries. TSADHE BSB BSB: The LORD has done what He planned; He has accomplished His decree, which He ordained in days of old; He has overthrown you without pity. He has let the enemy gloat over you and exalted the horn of your foes.
18 ULT Their heart cried out to the Lord. O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears flow down like a river day and night! Do not give yourself relief; do not let the daughter of your eye rest. QOPH BSB BSB: The hearts of the people cry out to the Lord. O wall of the Daughter of Zion, let your tears run down like a river day and night. Give yourself no relief, and your eyes no rest.
19 ULT Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the night watches! Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord. Lift up your hands to him for the life of your children, who are fainting with hunger at the head of every street. RESH BSB BSB: Arise, cry out in the night from the first watch of the night. 21 ULT Young and old lie down on the ground in the streets. My young women and my young men have fallen by the sword. You have slain on the day of your anger; you have slaughtered; you have not shown compassion. TAW BSB BSB: Both young and old lie together in the dust of the streets. 22 ULT You have summoned, as on a day of an appointed festival, my terrors from all around, and there was not on the day of the anger of Yahweh an escapee or a survivor. Those whom I carried and multiplied, my enemy has consumed them. BSB BSB: You summoned my terrors on every side, as for the day of an appointed feast. In the day of the LORD’s anger no one escaped or survived; my enemy has destroyed those I nurtured and reared.
