Laws about Skin Diseases (Numbers 5:1–4)
ULT And Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
ULT “A man, when he has on the skin of his flesh a swelling or a scab or a bright spot, and it becomes on the skin of his flesh an infection of skin disease, then he shall be brought to Aaron the priest or to one from his sons the priests. BSB BSB: “When someone has a swelling or rash or bright spot on his skin that may be an infectious skin disease, he must be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons who is a priest.
ULT And the priest shall see the infection on the skin of the flesh, and{ if} the hair on the infection has turned white, and the appearance of the infection{ is} deeper than the skin of his flesh, it{ is} an infection of skin disease. And the priest shall see it, and he shall pronounce him unclean. BSB BSB: The priest is to examine the infection on his skin, and if the hair in the infection has turned white and the sore appears to be deeper than the skin, it is a skin disease. After the priest examines him, he must pronounce him unclean.
ULT And if it{ is} a white bright spot on the skin of his flesh, and deep is not the appearance of it from the skin, and its hair has not turned white, then the priest shall separate the infection{ for} seven days. BSB BSB: If, however, the spot on his skin is white and does not appear to be deeper than the skin, and the hair in it has not turned white, the priest shall isolate the infected person for seven days.
ULT And the priest shall see it on the seventh day, and behold, the infection stands in his eyes; the infection has not spread on the skin. Then the priest shall separate him{ for} a second seven days. BSB BSB: On the seventh day the priest is to reexamine him, and if he sees that the infection is unchanged and has not spread on the skin, the priest must isolate him for another seven days.
ULT And the priest shall see him on the second seventh day, and behold, the infection has faded, and the infection has not spread on the skin. Then the priest shall pronounce him clean. It{ is} a scab, and he shall wash his clothes, and he will be clean. BSB BSB: The priest will examine him again on the seventh day, and if the sore has faded and has not spread on the skin, the priest shall pronounce him clean; it is a rash. The person must wash his clothes and be clean.
ULT But if, spreading, the scab spreads on the skin after his appearing to the priest for his being pronounced clean, then he shall appear to the priest a second{ time}. BSB BSB: But if the rash spreads further on his skin after he has shown himself to the priest for his cleansing, he must present himself again to the priest.
ULT And the priest shall see, and behold, the scab has spread on the skin. Then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It{ is} a skin disease. BSB BSB: The priest will reexamine him, and if the rash has spread on the skin, the priest must pronounce him unclean; it is a skin disease.
ULT An infection of skin disease, when it is on a man, then he shall be brought to the priest. BSB BSB: When anyone develops a skin disease, he must be brought to the priest.
ULT And the priest shall see, and behold, a white swelling{ is} on the skin, and it has turned the hair white, and a preservation of living flesh{ is} on the swelling. BSB BSB: The priest will examine him, and if there is a white swelling on the skin that has turned the hair white, and there is raw flesh in the swelling,
ULT It{ is} a reoccurring skin disease on the skin of his flesh, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean. He shall not separate him, because he{ is} unclean. BSB BSB: it is a chronic skin disease and the priest must pronounce him unclean. He need not isolate him, for he is unclean.
ULT But if, breaking out, the skin disease breaks out on the skin, and the skin disease covers all the skin of the infection, from his head and to his feet, to the whole vision of the eyes of the priest, BSB BSB: But if the skin disease breaks out all over his skin so that it covers all the skin of the infected person from head to foot, as far as the priest can see,
ULT then the priest shall see, and behold, the skin disease has covered his whole flesh. Then he shall pronounce the infection clean. All of it has turned white; he{ is} clean. BSB BSB: the priest shall examine him, and if the disease has covered his entire body, he is to pronounce the infected person clean. Since it has all turned white, he is clean.
ULT And on the day of the appearing of living flesh on him, he will be unclean. BSB BSB: But whenever raw flesh appears on someone, he will be unclean.
ULT And the priest shall see the living flesh, and he shall pronounce him unclean. The living flesh, it{ is} unclean. It{ is} a skin disease. BSB BSB: When the priest sees the raw flesh, he must pronounce him unclean. The raw flesh is unclean; it is a skin disease.
ULT Or when the living flesh returns, and it is turned to white, then he shall go to the priest. BSB BSB: But if the raw flesh changes and turns white, he must go to the priest.
ULT And the priest shall see him, and behold, the infection has been turned to white. Then the priest shall pronounce the infection clean. He{ is} clean. BSB BSB: The priest will reexamine him, and if the infection has turned white, the priest is to pronounce the infected person clean; then he is clean.
ULT But flesh, when it has on it, on his skin, a boil, and it has been healed, BSB BSB: When a boil appears on someone’s skin and it heals,
ULT and a white swelling or a white- reddish bright spot is in the place of the boil, then he shall show himself to the priest. BSB BSB: and a white swelling or a reddish-white spot develops where the boil was, he must present himself to the priest.
ULT And the priest shall see, and behold, the appearance{ is} deeper than the skin, and its hair has turned white. Then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It{ is} an infection of skin disease; it has broken out in the boil. BSB BSB: The priest shall examine it, and if it appears to be beneath the skin and the hair in it has turned white, the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is a diseased infection that has broken out in the boil.
ULT And if the priest sees it, and behold, there is no white hair on it, and lower it is not than the skin, and it has faded, then the priest shall separate him{ for} seven days. BSB BSB: But when the priest examines it, if there is no white hair in it, and it is not beneath the skin and has faded, the priest shall isolate him for seven days.
ULT But if, spreading, it spreads on the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It{ is} an infection. BSB BSB: If it spreads any further on the skin, the priest must pronounce him unclean; it is an infection.
ULT But if the bright spot stands under it(it has not spread), it{ is} the scar of the boil. And the priest shall pronounce him clean. BSB BSB: But if the spot remains unchanged and does not spread, it is only the scar from the boil, and the priest shall pronounce him clean.
ULT Or flesh, when it has a burn of fire on his skin, and the preservation of the burn has become a reddish- white or white spot, BSB BSB: When there is a burn on someone’s skin and the raw area of the burn becomes reddish-white or white,
ULT then the priest shall see it, and behold, the hair has been turned white on the bright spot, and the appearance of it{ is} deeper than the skin; it{ is} a skin disease. It has broken out on the burn. And the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It{ is} an infection of skin disease. BSB BSB: the priest must examine it. If the hair in the spot has turned white and the spot appears to be deeper than the skin, it is a disease that has broken out in the burn. The priest must pronounce him unclean; it is a diseased infection.
ULT But if the priest sees it, and behold, there is no white hair on the spot, and deeper it is not than the skin, but it{ is} faded, then the priest shall separate him{ for} seven days. BSB BSB: But if the priest examines it and there is no white hair in the spot, and it is not beneath the skin but has faded, the priest shall isolate him for seven days.
ULT And the priest shall see him on the seventh day. If, spreading, it has spread on the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It{ is} an infection of skin disease. BSB BSB: On the seventh day the priest is to reexamine him, and if it has spread further on the skin, the priest must pronounce him unclean; it is a diseased infection.
ULT But if the bright spot stands under it— it has not spread on the skin but it{ is} faded— it{ is} the swelling of the burn. And the priest shall pronounce him clean, because it{ is} the scar of the burn. BSB BSB: But if the spot is unchanged and has not spread on the skin but has faded, it is a swelling from the burn, and the priest is to pronounce him clean; for it is only the scar from the burn.
ULT And a man or a woman, when he has an infection on him, on a head or in a beard, BSB BSB: If a man or woman has an infection on the head or chin,
ULT then the priest shall see the infection. And behold, the appearance of it{ is} deeper than the skin, and on it{ is} yellow, thin hair. Then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It{ is} a scall. It{ is} a skin disease of the head or the beard. BSB BSB: the priest shall examine the infection, and if it appears to be deeper than the skin and the hair in it is yellow and thin, the priest must pronounce him unclean; it is a scaly outbreak, an infectious disease of the head or chin.
ULT But when the priest sees the infection of the scall, and behold, the appearance of it is not deeper than the skin, and there is no black hair on it. Then the priest shall separate the infection of the scall{ for} seven days. BSB BSB: But if the priest examines the scaly infection and it does not appear to be deeper than the skin, and there is no black hair in it, the priest shall isolate the infected person for seven days.
ULT And the priest shall see the infection on the seventh day. And behold, the scall has not spread, and yellow hair is not on it, and the appearance of the scall is not deeper than the skin. BSB BSB: On the seventh day the priest is to reexamine the infection, and if the scaly outbreak has not spread and there is no yellow hair in it, and it does not appear to be deeper than the skin,
ULT Then he shall shave himself, but the scall shall not be shaved. And the priest shall separate the scall{ for} a second seven days. BSB BSB: then the person must shave himself except for the scaly area. Then the priest shall isolate him for another seven days.
ULT And the priest shall see the scall on the seventh day. And behold, the scall has not spread on the skin, and the appearance of it is not deeper than the skin. Then the priest shall pronounce him clean. And he shall wash his clothes, and he will be clean. BSB BSB: On the seventh day the priest shall examine the scaly outbreak, and if it has not spread on the skin and does not appear to be deeper than the skin, the priest is to pronounce him clean. He must wash his clothes, and he will be clean.
ULT But if, spreading, the scall has spread on the skin after his cleansing, BSB BSB: If, however, the scaly outbreak spreads further on the skin after his cleansing,
ULT then the priest shall see him. And behold, the scall has spread on the skin. The priest shall not seek for yellow hair; he{ is} unclean. BSB BSB: the priest is to examine him, and if the scaly outbreak has spread on the skin, the priest need not look for yellow hair; the person is unclean.
ULT But if, in his eyes, the scall stands, and black hair has sprouted on it, the scall has been healed. He{ is} clean, and the priest shall pronounce him clean. BSB BSB: If, however, in his sight the scaly outbreak is unchanged and black hair has grown in it, then it has healed. He is clean, and the priest is to pronounce him clean.
ULT And a man or a woman, when he has on the skin of their flesh bright spots, white bright spots, BSB BSB: When a man or a woman has white spots on the skin,
ULT then the priest shall see. And behold, the bright spots on the skin of their flesh{ are} dull white; it{ is} a rash. It has broken out on the skin. He{ is} clean. BSB BSB: the priest shall examine them, and if the spots are dull white, it is a harmless rash that has broken out on the skin; the person is clean.
ULT And a man, when his head is made bare, he{ is} bald. He{ is} clean. BSB BSB: Now if a man loses his hair and is bald, he is still clean.
ULT And if his head is made bare from the corners of his face, he{ is} balding. He{ is} clean. BSB BSB: Or if his hairline recedes and he is bald on his forehead, he is still clean.
ULT But when there is on the{ back} bald spot or on the{ front} balding spot a reddish- white infection, it{ is} a skin disease, breaking out on his{ back} bald spot or on his{ front} balding spot. BSB BSB: But if there is a reddish-white sore on the bald head or forehead, it is an infectious disease breaking out on it.
ULT Then the priest shall see him. And behold, the swelling of the infection is reddish- white on his{ back} bald spot or on his{ front} balding spot, like the appearance of the skin disease of the skin of the flesh. BSB BSB: The priest is to examine him, and if the swelling of the infection on his bald head or forehead is reddish-white like a skin disease,
ULT He{ is} a man of a skin disease; he{ is} unclean. Being unclean, the priest shall pronounce him unclean on his head of his infection. BSB BSB: the man is diseased; he is unclean. The priest must pronounce him unclean because of the infection on his head.
ULT But the person with a skin disease, who{ has} on him the infection, on his clothes, they shall be torn, and his head shall be unbound, and he shall cover over the mustache, and‘Unclean, unclean!’ he shall call out. BSB BSB: A diseased person must wear torn clothes and let his hair hang loose, and he must cover his mouth and cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean!’
ULT All the days that the infection{ is} on him he will be unclean. He{ is} unclean. He shall dwell alone; his dwelling{ shall be} outside the camp. BSB BSB: As long as he has the infection, he remains unclean. He must live alone in a place outside the camp.
Laws about Mildew 47 ULT But the clothing, when it has on it the infection of disease, on clothing of wool or on clothing of linen, BSB BSB: If any fabric is contaminated with mildew—any wool or linen garment,
ULT or in the warp or in the woof of the linen or of the wool, or on leather, or on any work of leather, BSB BSB: any weave or knit of linen or wool, or any article of leather—
ULT and the infection is yellowish- green or reddish on the clothing or on the leather or in the warp or in the woof or on any article of leather, it{ is} an infection of disease. And the priest shall be made to see{ it}. BSB BSB: and if the mark in the fabric, leather, weave, knit, or leather article is green or red, then it is contaminated with mildew and must be shown to the priest.
ULT And the priest shall see the infection, and he shall separate the infection{ for} seven days. BSB BSB: And the priest is to examine the mildew and isolate the contaminated fabric for seven days.
ULT And he shall see the infection on the seventh day. If the infection has spread on the clothing or in the warp or in the woof or on the leather— of any equipment into which the leather was made— the infection{ is} a malignant disease. It{ is} unclean. BSB BSB: On the seventh day the priest shall reexamine it, and if the mildew has spread in the fabric, weave, knit, or leather, then regardless of how it is used, it is a harmful mildew; the article is unclean.
ULT And he shall burn the clothing or the warp or the woof, on wool or on linen or any equipment of leather, whatever has on it the infection, because it{ is} a malignant disease. It shall be burned with fire. BSB BSB: He is to burn the fabric, weave, or knit, whether the contaminated item is wool or linen or leather. Since the mildew is harmful, the article must be burned up.
ULT But if the priest sees, and behold, the infection has not spread on the clothing or in the warp or in the woof or on any equipment of leather, BSB BSB: But when the priest reexamines it, if the mildew has not spread in the fabric, weave, knit, or leather article,
ULT then the priest shall command, and they shall wash that which the infection{ was} on it. And he shall separate it{ for} a second seven days. BSB BSB: the priest is to order the contaminated article to be washed and isolated for another seven days.
ULT And the priest shall see after the infection has been washed, and behold, the infection has not turned its eye and the infection has not spread. It{ is} unclean. You shall burn it with fire. It{ is} a rot, on its bare back side or on its bare front side. BSB BSB: After it has been washed, the priest is to reexamine it, and if the mildewed article has not changed in appearance, it is unclean. Even though the mildew has not spread, you must burn it, whether the rot is on the front or back.
ULT But if the priest sees, and behold, the infection has faded after it was washed, then he shall tear it from the clothing or from the leather or from the warp or from the woof. BSB BSB: If the priest examines it and the mildew has faded after it has been washed, he must cut the contaminated section out of the fabric, leather, weave, or knit.
ULT And if it still appears on the clothing or in the warp or in the woof or on any article of leather, it is breaking out. You shall burn it with fire— that which{ has} the infection on it. BSB BSB: But if it reappears in the fabric, weave, or knit, or on any leather article, it is spreading. You must burn the contaminated article.
ULT But the clothing or the warp or the woof or any article of leather that you washed and the infection turned aside from them, it shall be washed a second{ time}, and it will be clean. BSB BSB: If the mildew disappears from the fabric, weave, or knit, or any leather article after washing, then it is to be washed again, and it will be clean.
ULT This{ is} the law of the infection of disease of clothing of wool or linen or warp or woof or any article of leather to pronounce it clean or to pronounce it unclean.” BSB BSB: This is the law concerning a mildew contamination in wool or linen fabric, weave, or knit, or any leather article, for pronouncing it clean or unclean.”
