The Uncleanness of Men (Deuteronomy 23:9–14)
1 ULT And Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, BSB BSB: And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
2 ULT “Speak to the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them,‘A man, a man, when he is flowing from his flesh, his flow— it{ is} unclean. BSB BSB: “Say to the Israelites, ‘When any man has a bodily discharge, the discharge is unclean.
3 ULT And this is his uncleanness in his flow:{ whether} his flesh secretes his flow or his flesh blocks his flow, it{ is} his uncleanness. BSB BSB: This uncleanness is from his discharge, whether his body allows the discharge to flow or blocks it. So his discharge will bring about uncleanness.
4 ULT Any bed on which the{ one} flowing lies shall be unclean, and any furniture on which he sits shall be unclean. BSB BSB: Any bed on which the man with the discharge lies will be unclean, and any furniture on which he sits will be unclean.
5 ULT And a man who touches his bed shall wash his clothes. And he shall bathe with water, and he shall be unclean until the evening. BSB BSB: Anyone who touches his bed must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening.
6 ULT And the person who sits on the furniture on which the{ one} flowing sat shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe with water, and he shall be unclean until the evening. BSB BSB: Whoever sits on furniture on which the man with the discharge was sitting must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening.
7 ULT And the person who touches the flesh of the{ one} flowing shall wash his clothes. And he shall bathe with water, and he shall be unclean until the evening. BSB BSB: Whoever touches the body of the man with a discharge must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening.
8 ULT And when the{ one} flowing spits on a person who is clean, then he shall wash his clothes and he shall bathe with water, and he shall be unclean until the evening. BSB BSB: If the man with the discharge spits on one who is clean, that person must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening.
9 ULT And any means of riding on which the flowing{ man} rides shall be unclean. BSB BSB: Any saddle on which the man with the discharge rides will be unclean.
10 ULT And any person who touches anything that was under him shall be unclean until the evening. And the one who lifts them shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe with water, and he shall be unclean until the evening. BSB BSB: Whoever touches anything that was under him will be unclean until evening, and whoever carries such things must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening.
11 ULT And anyone whom the{ one} flowing touches and he does not rinse his hands in water, then he shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe in water, and he shall be unclean until the evening. BSB BSB: If the man with the discharge touches anyone without first rinsing his hands with water, the one who was touched must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening.
12 ULT And a vessel of clay that the{ one} flowing touches shall be broken, and every vessel of wood shall be rinsed with water. BSB BSB: Any clay pot that the man with the discharge touches must be broken, and any wooden utensil must be rinsed with water.
The Cleansing of Men 13 ULT And when the{ one} flowing cleanses from his flow, then he shall count for himself seven days for his cleansing. And he shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in living water. And he will be clean. BSB BSB: When the man has been cleansed from his discharge, he must count off seven days for his cleansing, wash his clothes, and bathe himself in fresh water, and he shall be clean.
14 ULT And on the eighth day, he shall take for himself two doves or two sons of a pigeon and he shall come to the face of Yahweh at the entrance of the tent of meeting. And he shall give them to the priest. BSB BSB: On the eighth day he is to take two turtledoves or two young pigeons, come before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, and give them to the priest.
15 ULT And the priest shall make them, one{ as} a sin offering and one{ as} a burnt offering. And the priest shall make atonement for him to the face of Yahweh for his flow. BSB BSB: The priest is to sacrifice them, one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for the man before the LORD because of his discharge.
16 ULT And a man, when a lying of seed goes out from him, then he shall bathe all his flesh with water. And he shall be unclean until the evening. BSB BSB: When a man has an emission of semen, he must bathe his whole body with water, and he will be unclean until evening.
17 ULT And any clothing and any leather on which is a lying of seed— and it shall be washed in water. And it shall be unclean until the evening. BSB BSB: Any clothing or leather on which there is an emission of semen must be washed with water, and it will remain unclean until evening.
18 ULT And a woman, when a man lies with her, a lying down of seed, then they shall bathe with water, and they shall be unclean until the evening. BSB BSB: If a man lies with a woman and there is an emission of semen, both must bathe with water, and they will remain unclean until evening.
The Uncleanness of Women 19 ULT And a woman, when she is flowing— blood is her flow in her flesh—{ for} seven days, she will be in her menstruation. And any person who touches her shall be unclean until the evening. BSB BSB: When a woman has a discharge consisting of blood from her body, she will be unclean due to her menstruation for seven days, and anyone who touches her will be unclean until evening.
20 ULT And anything on which she lies in her menstruation shall be unclean. And anything on which she sits shall be unclean. BSB BSB: Anything on which she lies or sits during her menstruation will be unclean,
21 ULT And any person who touches her bed shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe with water. And he shall be unclean until the evening. BSB BSB: and anyone who touches her bed must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening.
22 ULT And any person who touches any furniture on which she sits shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe with water. And he shall be unclean until the evening. BSB BSB: Whoever touches any furniture on which she was sitting must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening.
23 ULT But if it{ is} on the bed or on furniture on which she is sitting, when he touches it, he shall be unclean until the evening. BSB BSB: And whether it is a bed or furniture on which she was sitting, whoever touches it will be unclean until evening.
24 ULT And if, lying, a man lies with her, and her menstruation is on him, then he shall be unclean{ for} seven days, and every bed on which he lies shall be unclean. BSB BSB: If a man lies with her and her menstrual flow touches him, he will be unclean for seven days, and any bed on which he lies will become unclean.
25 ULT And a woman, when a flow of her blood flows{ for} many days when{ it is} not the time of her menstruation, or when she flows beyond her menstruation, all the days of the flow of her uncleanness shall be like the days of her menstruation. She{ is} unclean. BSB BSB: When a woman has a discharge of her blood for many days at a time other than her menstrual period, or if it continues beyond her period, she will be unclean all the days of her unclean discharge, just as she is during the days of her menstruation.
26 ULT Every bed on which she lies all the days of her flow shall be to her like the bed of her menstruation. And any furniture on which she sits shall be unclean, like the uncleanness of her menstruation. BSB BSB: Any bed on which she lies or any furniture on which she sits during the days of her discharge will be unclean, like her bed during her menstrual period.
27 ULT And any person who touches them shall be unclean. And he shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe with water, and he shall be unclean until the evening. BSB BSB: Anyone who touches these things will be unclean; he must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening.
The Cleansing of Women 28 ULT But if she becomes clean from her flow, then she shall count for herself seven days and, afterward, she shall be clean. BSB BSB: When a woman is cleansed of her discharge, she must count off seven days, and after that she will be ceremonially clean.
29 ULT And on the eighth day, she shall take for herself two doves or two sons of a pigeon and she shall bring them to the priest, to the entrance of the tent of meeting. BSB BSB: On the eighth day she is to take two turtledoves or two young pigeons and bring them to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
30 ULT And the priest shall make one{ as} a sin offering and one{ as} a burnt offering. And the priest shall make atonement for her to the face of Yahweh from the flow of her uncleanness. BSB BSB: The priest is to sacrifice one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for her before the LORD for her unclean discharge.
31 ULT And you shall hold back the sons of Israel from their uncleanness, and they will not die by their uncleanness, by their defiling my Dwelling, which{ is} in their midst. BSB BSB: You must keep the children of Israel separate from their uncleanness, so that they do not die by defiling My tabernacle, which is among them.
32 ULT This{ is} the law of the flowing{ person} and of him from whom a layer of seed goes out to become unclean by it BSB BSB: This is the law of him who has a discharge, of the man who has an emission of semen whereby he is unclean,
33 ULT and of{ the woman} who is sick in her menstruation and of the flowing of his flow, whether male or female, and of the man who lies with an unclean{ woman}.’” BSB BSB: of a woman in her menstrual period, of any male or female who has a discharge, and of a man who lies with an unclean woman.’”
