Punishments for Disobedience (Leviticus 26:14–39; Deuteronomy 28:15–68)
1 ULT And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
2 ULT “And to the sons of Israel, you shall say,‘A man, a man from the sons of Israel or from the sojourner, the one sojourning in Israel, who gives from his seed to Molech— dying, he shall be executed. The people of the land shall stone him with the rock. BSB BSB: “Tell the Israelites, ‘Any Israelite or foreigner living in Israel who gives any of his children to Molech must be put to death. The people of the land are to stone him.
3 ULT And I myself will set my face against that man, and I will cut him off from among his people, for he gave his seed to Molech, to make my Holy Place unclean and to profane my holy name. BSB BSB: And I will set My face against that man and cut him off from his people, because by giving his offspring to Molech, he has defiled My sanctuary and profaned My holy name.
4 ULT And if, hiding, the people of the land hide their eyes from that man when he gives his seed to Molech, so as not to execute him, BSB BSB: And if the people of the land ever hide their eyes and fail to put to death the man who gives one of his children to Molech,
5 ULT then I myself will set my face against that man and his clan. And I will cut him off and all the people who practice prostitution after him, by prostituting after Molech, from the midst of their people. BSB BSB: then I will set My face against that man and his family and cut off from among their people both him and all who follow him in prostituting themselves with Molech.
6 ULT And the person who turns to the mediums or to the spiritists to practice prostitution after them— I will set my face against that person. And I will cut him off from among his people. BSB BSB: Whoever turns to mediums or spiritists to prostitute himself with them, I will also set My face against that person and cut him off from his people.
7 ULT So you shall make yourselves holy and you shall be holy{ people}, because I{ am} Yahweh your God. BSB BSB: Consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, because I am the LORD your God.
8 ULT And you shall keep my statutes, and you shall do them. I{ am} Yahweh, the one making you holy. BSB BSB: And you shall keep My statutes and practice them. I am the LORD who sanctifies you.
9 ULT When a man, a man who curses his father or his mother, dying— he shall be executed. His father and his mother he has cursed; his blood{ is} on him. BSB BSB: If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death. He has cursed his father or mother; his blood shall be upon him.
Punishments for Sexual Immorality (Proverbs 5:1–23; 1 Corinthians 5:1–8)
10 ULT And a man who commits adultery{ with} the wife of a man, who commits adultery{ with} the wife of his neighbor— dying, the adulterer and the adulteress shall be executed. BSB BSB: If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress must surely be put to death.
11 ULT And a man who lies with the wife of his father— he has uncovered the nakedness of his father. Dying, both of them shall be executed; their blood{ is} on them. BSB BSB: If a man lies with his father’s wife, he has uncovered his father’s nakedness. Both must surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.
12 ULT And a man who lies with his daughter- in- law— dying, both of them shall be executed. They have done perversion; their blood{ is} on them. BSB BSB: If a man lies with his daughter-in-law, both must surely be put to death. They have acted perversely; their blood is upon them.
13 ULT And a man who lies with a male, lying as a woman, both of them have done an abomination. Dying, they shall be executed; their blood{ is} on them. BSB BSB: If a man lies with a man as with a woman, they have both committed an abomination. They must surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.
14 ULT And a man who takes a wife and her mother— this{ is} depravity. They shall burn him and them with fire, and depravity will not be in your midst. BSB BSB: If a man marries both a woman and her mother, it is depraved. Both he and they must be burned in the fire, so that there will be no depravity among you.
15 ULT And a man who gives his layer in a livestock— dying, he shall be executed, and you shall kill the livestock. BSB BSB: If a man lies carnally with an animal, he must be put to death. And you are also to kill the animal.
16 ULT And a woman who draws near to any livestock to mate with it— then you shall kill the woman and the livestock. Dying, they must be executed; their blood{ is} on them. BSB BSB: If a woman approaches any animal to mate with it, you must kill both the woman and the animal. They must surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.
17 ULT And a man who takes his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother, and he sees her nakedness, and she herself sees his nakedness— it{ is} a disgrace. And they shall be cut off in the eyes of the sons of their people. The nakedness of his sister he has uncovered; he shall bear his iniquity. BSB BSB: If a man marries his sister, whether the daughter of his father or of his mother, and they have sexual relations, it is a disgrace. They must be cut off in the sight of their people. He has uncovered the nakedness of his sister; he shall bear his iniquity.
18 ULT And a man who lies with a sick woman— and he has uncovered her nakedness; he has exposed her flow, and she herself has uncovered the flow of her blood. And{ the} two of them shall be cut off from among their people. BSB BSB: If a man lies with a menstruating woman and has sexual relations with her, he has exposed the source of her flow, and she has uncovered the source of her blood. Both of them must be cut off from among their people.
19 ULT And the nakedness of the sister of your mother or the sister of your father, you shall not uncover because he would expose his body. They shall carry their iniquity. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with the sister of your mother or your father, for it is exposing one’s own kin; both shall bear their iniquity.
20 ULT And a man who lies with his aunt, he has uncovered the nakedness of his uncle. They will bear their sin; they will die childless. BSB BSB: If a man lies with his uncle’s wife, he has uncovered the nakedness of his uncle. They will bear their sin; they shall die childless.
21 ULT And a man who takes the wife of his brother, it is menstruation{ impurity}. He has uncovered the nakedness of his brother; they will be childless. BSB BSB: If a man marries his brother’s wife, it is an act of impurity. He has uncovered the nakedness of his brother; they shall be childless.
Distinguish between Clean and Unclean 22 ULT And you shall keep all my statutes and all my judgments. And you shall do them, and the land that I am bringing you there to dwell in it will not vomit you out. BSB BSB: You are therefore to keep all My statutes and ordinances, so that the land where I am bringing you to live will not vomit you out.
23 ULT And you shall not walk in the statutes of the nation that I am sending out from before your face, for they do all these things, and I loathe them.’ BSB BSB: You must not follow the statutes of the nations I am driving out before you. Because they did all these things, I abhorred them.
24 ULT And I said to you,‘You yourselves will inherit their land, and I will give it to you to inherit it: a land flowing{ with} milk and honey. I am Yahweh your God, who separates you from the peoples. BSB BSB: But I have told you that you will inherit their land, since I will give it to you as an inheritance—a land flowing with milk and honey. I am the LORD your God, who has set you apart from the peoples.
26 ULT And you shall be holy{ people} for me, because I Yahweh am holy, and I separate you from the peoples to be for me. BSB BSB: You are to be holy to Me because I, the LORD, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be My own.
27 ULT And a man or woman, when there is among them a medium or spiritist— dying, they shall be executed. They must stone them with stones. Their blood{ is} on them.’” BSB BSB: A man or a woman who is a medium or spiritist must surely be put to death. They shall be stoned; their blood is upon them.’”
