Women Minister to Jesus 3 ULT and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’ s manager; and Susanna; and many others; who were ministering to them out of their possessions. BSB BSB: Joanna the wife of Herod’s household manager Chuza, Susanna, and many others. These women were ministering to them out of their own means.
The Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1–23; Mark 4:1–20)
ULT And{ when} a large crowd was gathering, and coming to him from each city, he spoke in a parable: BSB BSB: While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, He told them this parable:
ULT “The sower went out to sow his seed, and as he sowed, some fell beside the road, and it was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the sky devoured it. BSB BSB: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, where it was trampled, and the birds of the air devoured it.
ULT And other seed fell on the rock, and having grown up, it withered, because it had no moisture. BSB BSB: Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the seedlings withered because they had no moisture.
ULT And other seed fell in the midst of the thorns, and having grown up with{ it}, the thorns choked it. BSB BSB: Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the seedlings.
ULT And other seed fell on the good soil, and having grown up, it produced fruit a hundred times greater.” Saying these things, he called out,“The one having ears to hear, let him hear.” BSB BSB: Still other seed fell on good soil, where it sprang up and produced a crop—a hundredfold.” As Jesus said this, He called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
ULT Then his disciples questioned him,“What is this parable?” BSB BSB: Then His disciples asked Him what this parable meant.
ULT And he said,“To you has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest in parables, so that,‘Seeing, they may not see; and hearing, they may not understand.’ BSB BSB: He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, ‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’
ULT And the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. BSB BSB: Now this is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.
ULT And the ones along the path are the ones having heard, but then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so they may not believe{ and} be saved. BSB BSB: The seeds along the path are those who hear, but the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.
ULT And the ones on the rock{ are} the ones, when they hear, receive the word with joy. But they have no root; they believe for a time, and in a time of testing they go away. BSB BSB: The seeds on rocky ground are those who hear the word and receive it with joy, but they have no root. They believe for a season, but in the time of testing, they fall away.
ULT And the ones having fallen among the thorns, these are the ones having heard, but as they go on their way, they are choked by worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and they do not produce mature fruit. BSB BSB: The seeds that fell among the thorns are those who hear, but as they go on their way, they are choked by the worries, riches, and pleasures of this life, and their fruit does not mature.
ULT But the ones on the good soil, these are the ones who, having heard the word with an honest and good heart, hold it securely and bear fruit with endurance. BSB BSB: But the seeds on good soil are those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, cling to it, and by persevering produce a crop.
The Lesson of the Lamp (Mark 4:21–25)
ULT And no one, having lit a lamp, covers it with a bowl or puts{ it} under a bed. Rather, he puts{ it} on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light. BSB BSB: No one lights a lamp and covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he sets it on a stand, so those who enter can see the light.
ULT For nothing is hidden that will not become visible, nor secret that will certainly not be known and come into visibility. BSB BSB: For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be made known and brought to light.
ULT So be careful how you listen, for whoever has, it will be given to him, but whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.” BSB BSB: Pay attention, therefore, to how you listen. Whoever has will be given more, but whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers (Matthew 12:46–50; Mark 3:31–35)
ULT Then his mother and brothers came to him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. BSB BSB: Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see Him, but they were unable to reach Him because of the crowd.
ULT Then it was reported to him,“Your mother and your brothers have stood outside, wanting to see you.” BSB BSB: He was told, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see You.”
ULT But answering, he said to them,“My mother and my brothers are those hearing and doing the word of God.” BSB BSB: But He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and carry it out.”
Jesus Calms the Storm (Psalm 107:1–43; Matthew 8:23–27; Mark 4:35–41)
ULT And it happened that, on one of those days, both he and his disciples got into a boat, and he said to them,“Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they put out. BSB BSB: One day Jesus said to His disciples, “Let us cross to the other side of the lake.” So He got into a boat with them and set out.
ULT But as they voyaged, he fell asleep. Then a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were being filled and were in danger. BSB BSB: As they sailed, He fell asleep, and a windstorm came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.
ULT Then they approached{ and} woke him up, saying,“Master! Master! We are perishing!” But awaking, he rebuked the wind and the waves of the water, and they ceased, and there was a calm. BSB BSB: The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters, and they subsided, and all was calm.
ULT Then he said to them,“Where{ is} your faith?” Then having become afraid, they marveled, saying to one another,“Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?” BSB BSB: “Where is your faith?” He asked. Frightened and amazed, they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him!”
The Demons and the Pigs (Matthew 8:28–34; Mark 5:1–20)
ULT And they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. BSB BSB: Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, across the lake from Galilee.
ULT And{ when} he came out onto the land, a certain man from the city, having demons, met him. And for a long time he had not worn clothes, and he did not live in a house, but in the tombs. BSB BSB: When Jesus stepped ashore, He was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothing or lived in a house, but he stayed in the tombs.
ULT And having seen Jesus, he cried out, fell down before him, and said in a loud voice,“What to me and to you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.” BSB BSB: When the man saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, shouting in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You not to torture me!”
ULT For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out from the man. For many times it had seized him, and he was bound with chains and shackles{ and} kept under guard, and breaking his bonds, he would be driven by the demon into the wilderness. BSB BSB: For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and been driven by the demon into solitary places.
ULT Then Jesus questioned him,“What is your name?” and he said,“Legion,” for many demons had entered into him. BSB BSB: “What is your name?” Jesus asked. “Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him.
ULT And they were begging him that he would not command them to go away into the abyss. BSB BSB: And the demons kept begging Jesus not to order them to go into the Abyss.
ULT And a large herd of pigs was there feeding on the hillside, and they begged him to permit them to go into them. And he permitted them. BSB BSB: There on the hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding. So the demons begged Jesus to let them enter the pigs, and He gave them permission.
ULT Then the demons, having come out from the man, entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep slope into the lake and was drowned. BSB BSB: Then the demons came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.
ULT And having seen what had happened, the ones tending the pigs ran away and reported it in the city and in the countryside. BSB BSB: When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside.
ULT Then they went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and being sound- minded, and they were afraid. BSB BSB: So the people went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man whom the demons had left, sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
ULT Then the ones having seen reported to them how the one having been possessed by demons had been saved. BSB BSB: Meanwhile, those who had seen it reported how the demon-possessed man had been healed.
ULT And all the multitude of the region of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized by great fear. Then he got into the boat to return. BSB BSB: Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to depart from them, because great fear had taken hold of them. So He got into the boat and started back.
ULT And the man from whom the demons had gone out begged him to be with him, but he sent him away, saying, BSB BSB: The man whom the demons had left begged to go with Jesus. But He sent him away, saying,
ULT “Return to your house and describe all that God has done for you.” So he went on his way, proclaiming throughout the whole city all that Jesus had done for him. BSB BSB: “Return home and describe how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and proclaimed all over the town how much Jesus had done for him.
The Healing Touch of Jesus (Matthew 9:18–26; Mark 5:21–43)
ULT Then when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. BSB BSB: When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him.
ULT And behold, a man came whose name{ was} Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at the feet of Jesus, he begged him to come to his house, BSB BSB: Just then a synagogue leader named Jairus came and fell at Jesus’ feet. He begged Him to come to his house,
ULT because he{ had} a one and only daughter, who was about 12 years old, and she was dying. And as he was going, the crowds were crowding around him. BSB BSB: because his only daughter, who was about twelve, was dying. As Jesus went with him, the crowds pressed around Him,
ULT And a woman, being with a flow of blood for 12 years, who, having spent all her living on doctors, was not able to be healed by anyone, BSB BSB: including a woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years. She had spent all her money on physicians, but no one was able to heal her.
ULT having approached from behind, touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her flow of blood stopped. BSB BSB: She came up behind Jesus and touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.
ULT And Jesus said,“Who{ is} the one having touched me?” But{ when} all denied it, Peter said,“Master, the crowds are crowding around and pressing against you.” BSB BSB: “Who touched Me?” Jesus asked. But they all denied it. “Master,” said Peter, “the people are crowding and pressing against You.”
ULT But Jesus said,“Someone touched me, for I know power has gone out from me.” BSB BSB: But Jesus declared, “Someone touched Me, for I know that power has gone out from Me.”
ULT Then the woman, having seen that she could not hide, came trembling and having fallen down before him, she declared before all the people for what reason she had touched him, and how she had been healed immediately. BSB BSB: Then the woman, seeing that she could not escape notice, came trembling and fell down before Him. In the presence of all the people, she explained why she had touched Him and how she had immediately been healed.
ULT Then he said to her,“Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace.” BSB BSB: “Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”
ULT He still speaking, someone comes from the synagogue leader, saying,“Your daughter has died. Do not trouble the Teacher any longer.” BSB BSB: While He was still speaking, someone arrived from the house of the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he told Jairus. “Do not bother the Teacher anymore.”
ULT But Jesus, having heard this, answered him,“Do not fear; only believe, and she will be saved.” BSB BSB: But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”
ULT And having come to the house, he did not allow anyone to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father of the child, and the mother. BSB BSB: When He entered the house, He did not allow anyone to go in with Him except Peter, John, James, and the child’s father and mother.
ULT And they were all mourning and beating their breasts for her, but he said,“Do not wail, for she has not died, but sleeps.” BSB BSB: Meanwhile, everyone was weeping and mourning for her. But Jesus said, “Stop weeping; she is not dead but asleep.”
ULT And they were laughing at him, knowing that she had died. BSB BSB: And they laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead.
ULT But he, having taken her hand, called out, saying,“Child, arise!” BSB BSB: But Jesus took her by the hand and called out, “Child, get up!”
ULT And her spirit returned, and she rose up immediately, and he ordered something to be given to her to eat. BSB BSB: Her spirit returned, and at once she got up. And He directed that she be given something to eat.
ULT And her parents were astonished, but he commanded them to tell no one what had happened. BSB BSB: Her parents were astounded, but Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.
