1. The Genealogy of Jesus

   (Ruth 4:18–22; Luke 3:23–38)

3. 2ULTAbraham fathered Isaac, and Isaac fathered Jacob, and Jacob fathered Judah and his brothers,BSBBSB: Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.
4. 3ULTand Judah fathered Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez fathered Hezrom, and Hezrom fathered Aram,BSBBSB: Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram.

17. 16ULTand Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, the one called Christ.BSBBSB: and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
18. 17ULTTherefore, all the generations from Abraham until David{ were} 14 generations, and from David until the Babylonian deportation{ were} 14 generations, and from the Babylonian deportation until the Christ{ were} 14 generations.BSBBSB: In all, then, there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.

19. The Birth of Jesus

    (Isaiah 7:10–16; Luke 2:1–7)

20. 18ULTNow the birth of Jesus Christ was thus: His mother, Mary, having been engaged to marry Joseph, before they came together, was found having in the womb from the Holy Spirit.BSBBSB: This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged in marriage to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
21. 19ULTNow Joseph her husband, being righteous, and not wanting to publicly disgrace her, intended to divorce her secretly.BSBBSB: Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and was unwilling to disgrace her publicly, he resolved to divorce her quietly.
22. 20ULTBut he having reflected on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him by way of a dream, saying,“Joseph, son of David, you should not fear to take Mary as your wife, because the one having been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.BSBBSB: But after he had pondered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to embrace Mary as your wife, for the One conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
23. 21ULTAnd she will bear a son, and you will call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”BSBBSB: She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”
24. 22ULTNow all this happened so that might be fulfilled{ what} was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,BSBBSB: All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
25. 23ULT“Behold, the virgin will have in her womb and bear a son, and they will call his name Immanuel”— which is translated,“God with us.”BSBBSB: “Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”).
26. 24ULTAnd Joseph, having been awakened from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took her{ as} his wife.BSBBSB: When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and embraced Mary as his wife.
27. 25ULTAnd he did not know her until she bore a son. And he called his name Jesus.BSBBSB: But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a Son. And he gave Him the name Jesus.
