The Tradition of the Elders (Mark 7:1–13)
ULT Then Pharisees and scribes come to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying, BSB BSB: Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,
ULT “Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.” BSB BSB: “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They do not wash their hands before they eat.”
ULT But he, answering, said to them,“Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?
ULT For God commanded, saying,‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and‘The one speaking evil of his father or mother, let him end in death.’ BSB BSB: For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’
ULT But you say,‘Whoever says to his father or mother,“Whatever you might have benefited from me{ is} a gift,” BSB BSB: But you say that if anyone says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would have received from me is a gift devoted to God,’
ULT he will certainly not honor his father.’ And you have set aside the word of God because of your tradition. BSB BSB: he need not honor his father or mother with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
ULT Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied well about you, saying, BSB BSB: You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you:
ULT But they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines commandments of men.’” BSB BSB: They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men.’”
What Defiles a Man (Mark 7:14–23)
ULT And having summoned the crowd, he said to them,“Listen and understand: BSB BSB: Jesus called the crowd to Him and said, “Listen and understand.
ULT What enters into the mouth does not defile the man, but what comes out from the mouth, this defiles the man.” BSB BSB: A man is not defiled by what enters his mouth, but by what comes out of it.”
ULT Then, having approached, the disciples said to him,“Do you know that the Pharisees, having heard this word, were caused to stumble?” BSB BSB: Then the disciples came to Him and said, “Are You aware that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”
ULT But he, answering, said,“Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. BSB BSB: But Jesus replied, “Every plant that My heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by its roots.
ULT Leave them! They are blind guides. But if a blind one guides a blind one, both will fall into a pit.” BSB BSB: Disregard them! They are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”
ULT But answering, Peter said to him,“Explain the parable to us.” BSB BSB: Peter said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”
ULT But he said,“Are you also still without understanding? BSB BSB: “Do you still not understand?” Jesus asked.
ULT Do you not yet understand that everything that enters into the mouth passes into the stomach and is passed out into the latrine? BSB BSB: “Do you not yet realize that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then is eliminated?
ULT But the things coming out from the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. BSB BSB: But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a man.
ULT For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies. BSB BSB: For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander.
ULT These are the things defiling the man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man.” BSB BSB: These are what defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile him.”
The Faith of the Canaanite Woman (Mark 7:24–30)
ULT And behold, a Canaanite woman, having come out from those regions, was crying out, saying,“Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon- possessed.” BSB BSB: And a Canaanite woman from that region came to Him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is miserably possessed by a demon.”
ULT But she, having come, bowed down to him, saying,“Lord, help me.” BSB BSB: The woman came and knelt before Him. “Lord, help me!” she said.
ULT Now he, answering, said,“It is not good to take the bread of the children and to throw{ it} to the little dogs.” BSB BSB: But Jesus replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
ULT But she said,“Yes, Lord, for also the little dogs eat from the crumbs falling from the table of their masters.” BSB BSB: “Yes, Lord,” she said, “even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
The Feeding of the Four Thousand (2 Kings 4:42–44; Mark 8:1–10)
ULT And having left from there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee, and having gone up on a mountain, he was sitting there. BSB BSB: Moving on from there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee. Then He went up on a mountain and sat down.
ULT And large crowds approached him, having with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others. And they laid them at his feet, and he healed them, BSB BSB: Large crowds came to Him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and laid them at His feet, and He healed them.
ULT so that the crowd marveled, seeing the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they glorified the God of Israel. BSB BSB: The crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.
ULT But Jesus, having summoned his disciples, said,“I have compassion on the crowd, because they are remaining with me already three days and do not have anything{ that} they might eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they might faint on the way.” BSB BSB: Then Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “I have compassion for this crowd, because they have already been with Me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may faint along the way.”
ULT And the disciples say to him,“From where{ would be} to us in a desolate place so many loaves so as to satisfy so large a crowd?” BSB BSB: The disciples replied, “Where in this desolate place could we find enough bread to feed such a large crowd?”
ULT And Jesus says to them,“How many loaves do you have?” And they said,“Seven, and a few small fish.” BSB BSB: “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”
ULT And having commanded the crowd to recline on the ground, BSB BSB: And He instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground.
ULT he took the seven loaves and the fish, and having given thanks, he broke{ them} and was giving{ them} to the disciples, and the disciples to the crowds. BSB BSB: Taking the seven loaves and the fish, He gave thanks and broke them. Then He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
ULT And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up the remaining of the broken pieces— seven baskets full. BSB BSB: They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
ULT But those eating were 4, 000 men, besides women and children. BSB BSB: A total of four thousand men were fed, besides women and children.
ULT And having sent away the crowds, he got into the boat and went into the regions of Magadan. BSB BSB: After Jesus had dismissed the crowds, He got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.
