The Parable of the Ten Virgins 1 ULT Then the kingdom of the heavens will be compared to ten virgins who, having taken their lamps, went out to a meeting of the bridegroom. BSB BSB: “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
ULT Now five of them were foolish and five wise. BSB BSB: Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.
ULT For the foolish, having taken their lamps, did not take oil with them. BSB BSB: The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take along any extra oil.
ULT But the wise took oil in the containers with their lamps. BSB BSB: But the wise ones took oil in flasks along with their lamps.
ULT But the bridegroom delaying, they all became sleepy and were sleeping. BSB BSB: When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
ULT But in the middle of the night there was a cry,‘Behold, the bridegroom! Go out to the meeting.’ BSB BSB: At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
ULT Then all those virgins got up and put their lamps in order. BSB BSB: Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.
ULT Now the foolish said to the wise,‘Give us from your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ BSB BSB: The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’
ULT But the wise answered, saying,‘Lest there not be enough for us and for you, go instead to the ones selling, and buy for yourselves.’ BSB BSB: ‘No,’ said the wise ones, ‘or there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
ULT But, they going away to buy, the bridegroom came, and the prepared entered with him into the wedding feast, and the door was shut. BSB BSB: But while they were on their way to buy it, the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut.
ULT But afterward also the rest of the virgins come, saying,‘Lord, lord, open for us!’ BSB BSB: Later the other virgins arrived and said, ‘Lord, lord, open the door for us!’
ULT But he, answering, said,‘Truly I say to you, I do not know you.’ BSB BSB: But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’
ULT Therefore, be alert, for you do not know the day nor the hour. BSB BSB: Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
The Parable of the Talents (Luke 19:11–27)
ULT For{ it is} as if a man, going abroad, called his own slaves and handed over to them his possessions. BSB BSB: For it is just like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted them with his possessions.
ULT And to one he gave five talents, and to one, two, and to one, one— to each according to his own ability. And immediately he went abroad. BSB BSB: To one he gave five talents, to another two talents, and to another one talent—each according to his own ability. And he went on his journey.
ULT Having gone, the one having received the five talents traded with them and gained another five talents. BSB BSB: The servant who had received the five talents went at once and put them to work and gained five more.
ULT Likewise, the one with the two also gained another two. BSB BSB: Likewise, the one with the two talents gained two more.
ULT But the one having received the one, having gone away, dug in the ground and hid the money of his master. BSB BSB: But the servant who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master’s money.
ULT Now after a long time, the master of those slaves comes and takes up a word together with them. BSB BSB: After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.
ULT And having approached, the one having received the five talents brought another five talents, saying,‘Master, you handed over to me five talents; behold, I gained another five talents.’ BSB BSB: The servant who had received the five talents came and presented five more. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’
ULT His master said to him,‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You were faithful over a few things. I will appoint you over many things. Enter into the joy of your master.’ BSB BSB: His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master!’
ULT Having approached, also the one with the two talents said,‘Master, you handed over to me two talents; behold, I gained another two talents.’ BSB BSB: The servant who had received the two talents also came and said, ‘Master, you entrusted me with two talents. See, I have gained two more.’
ULT But having approached, also the one having received the one talent said,‘Master, I knew you, that you are a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter. BSB BSB: Finally, the servant who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Master, I knew that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed.
ULT And having become afraid, having gone away, I hid your talent in the ground. Behold, you have{ what is} yours.’ BSB BSB: So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what belongs to you.’
ULT But answering, his master said to him,‘Wicked and lazy slave! Did you know that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I did not scatter? BSB BSB: ‘You wicked, lazy servant!’ replied his master. ‘You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed.
ULT Therefore, it was necessary for you to have put my money with the bankers, and having come, I would have received back{ what is} mine with interest. BSB BSB: Then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received it back with interest.
ULT Therefore, take away the talent from him and give it to the one having the ten talents. BSB BSB: Therefore take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten talents.
ULT For to everyone having, it will be given and it will abound. But from the one not having, even what he has will be taken away from him. BSB BSB: For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. But the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
ULT And throw the worthless slave out into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and grinding of the teeth.’ BSB BSB: And throw that worthless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
The Sheep and the Goats 32 ULT And before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them from one another, just as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. BSB BSB: All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate the people one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
ULT And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on his left. BSB BSB: He will place the sheep on His right and the goats on His left.
ULT Then the King will say to the ones on his right,‘Come, the ones having been blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. BSB BSB: Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
ULT For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and you gathered together with me; BSB BSB: For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in,
ULT { I was} naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you cared for me; I was in prison, and you came to me.’ BSB BSB: I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me.’
ULT Then the righteous will answer him, saying,‘Lord, when did we see you being hungry and feed{ you}? Or being thirsty and give{ you} to drink? BSB BSB: Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink?
ULT And when did we see you a stranger and gather together with{ you}? Or naked and clothe{ you}? BSB BSB: When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You?
ULT And when did we see you sick or in prison and come to you?’ BSB BSB: When did we see You sick or in prison and visit You?’
ULT And answering, the King will say to them,‘Truly I say to you, as much as you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ BSB BSB: And the King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.’
ULT For I was hungry, and you did not give me to eat; I was thirsty, and you did not give me to drink; BSB BSB: For I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink,
ULT I was a stranger, and you did not gather together with me;{ I was} naked, and you did not clothe me;{ I was} sick and in prison, and you did not care for me.’ BSB BSB: I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, I was naked and you did not clothe Me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after Me.’
ULT Then they also will answer, saying,‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not serve you?’ BSB BSB: And they too will reply, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’
ULT Then he will answer them, saying,‘Truly I say to you, as much as you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ BSB BSB: Then the King will answer, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me.’
