The Burden against Nineveh (Jonah 1:1–3)
1 ULT The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum, the Elkoshite. BSB BSB: This is the burden against Nineveh, the book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite:
2 ULT Yahweh{ is} a jealous and avenging God; Yahweh{ is} an avenger and master of wrath; Yahweh takes vengeance on his adversaries, and he maintains against his enemies. BSB BSB: The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and full of wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on His foes and reserves wrath for His enemies.
3 ULT Yahweh{ is} long of nostrils and great in power; and to acquit he will not acquit. Yahweh— in whirlwind and storm{ is} his way, and cloud{ is} the dust of his feet. BSB BSB: The LORD is slow to anger and great in power; the LORD will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. His path is in the whirlwind and storm, and clouds are the dust beneath His feet.
4 ULT He rebukes the sea and makes it dry, and all the rivers he dries up. Bashan withers, also Carmel; and the flowers of Lebanon wither. BSB BSB: He rebukes the sea and dries it up; He makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither, and the flower of Lebanon wilts.
5 ULT Mountains shake before him, and the hills melt; and the earth heaves before his face; and the world and all the dwellers in it. BSB BSB: The mountains quake before Him, and the hills melt away; the earth trembles at His presence—the world and all its dwellers.
6 ULT To the face of his indignation, who can stand? And who can arise against the burning of his nose? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken apart before him. BSB BSB: Who can withstand His indignation? Who can endure His burning anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; even rocks are shattered before Him.
7 ULT Yahweh{ is} good, for a stronghold in a day of trouble, and knowing those taking refuge in him. BSB BSB: The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of distress; He cares for those who trust in Him.
8 ULT But he will make a complete end to its place with an overwhelming flood; darkness will pursue his enemies. BSB BSB: But with an overwhelming flood He will make an end of Nineveh and pursue His enemies into darkness.
9 ULT What are you plotting against Yahweh? He will make a complete end{ to it}; trouble will not rise up a second time. BSB BSB: Whatever you plot against the LORD, He will bring to an end. Affliction will not rise up a second time.
10 ULT For like tangled thorn- bushes and like their drink being drunk, they are devoured— like dried stubble— fully. BSB BSB: For they will be entangled as with thorns and consumed like the drink of a drunkard—like stubble that is fully dry.
11 ULT From you came out a plotter of evil against Yahweh, an advisor of wickedness. BSB BSB: From you, O Nineveh, comes forth a plotter of evil against the LORD, a counselor of wickedness.
12 ULT Thus says Yahweh:“{ Even} if they are full and likewise numerous, also likewise they have been sheared, and he has passed away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more. BSB BSB: This is what the LORD says: “Though they are allied and numerous, yet they will be cut down and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, O Judah, I will afflict you no longer.
13 ULT And now I will break his yoke from upon you, and your shackles I will tear off.” BSB BSB: For I will now break their yoke from your neck and tear away your shackles.”
14 ULT And Yahweh has commanded concerning you:“One will not be sown from your name any more. I will cut off the carved figures and the cast metal figures from the house of your gods. I will prepare your graves, for you are worthless.” BSB BSB: The LORD has issued a command concerning you, O Nineveh: “There will be no descendants to carry on your name. I will cut off the carved image and cast idol from the house of your gods; I will prepare your grave, for you are contemptible.”
15 ULT Behold, on the mountains, the feet of a herald, announcing peace! Celebrate your celebrations, O Judah, and keep your vows, for the wicked will not repeat to invade you again; he is completely cut off. BSB BSB: Look to the mountains—the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your feasts, O Judah; fulfill your vows. For the wicked will never again march through you; they will be utterly cut off.
