The Seventh Day (Exodus 16:22–30; Hebrews 4:1–11)
UST That is how God finished{ creating} the heavens and the earth, including all the many things that are in them. BSB BSB: Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
UST By the seventh day he had finished the work he had been doing, so he rested on that day from all that work. BSB BSB: And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work.
UST Then God established the seventh day{ as a day} to bless{ people}, by setting it apart as a special time{ to rest and worship him}.{ He did that} because on that day he no longer did the work that he had been doing, creating{ everything}. 2:4-25 BSB BSB: Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished.
Man and Woman in the Garden 5 UST { for a while} there were not yet any bushes{ growing} in the fields on the earth, and there were not any{ other} plants that had sprouted yet.{ That was} because God had not{ yet} sent rain to water the earth, and human beings did not exist{ yet} to cultivate the ground. BSB BSB: Now no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth, nor had any plant of the field sprouted, for the LORD God had not yet sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.
UST { During that time} springs of water kept seeping up from underground and supplied water to the entire surface of the land. BSB BSB: But springs welled up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
UST Now Yahweh God had planted a{ large} garden in{ the region of} Eden,{ which was} in the east, and that is where he put the man whom he had created. BSB BSB: And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, where He placed the man He had formed.
UST { There} Yahweh had caused all{ types of} trees to grow from the ground that are beautiful to look at and{ that grow fruit that is} good to eat. In the middle of the garden was the tree whose fruit makes people live{ forever}, as well as the tree whose fruit enables people to know{ what is} good and{ what is} evil. BSB BSB: Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree that is pleasing to the eye and good for food. And in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
UST There was a river flowing through{ the region of} Eden that provided water for the park. From Eden the river divided into four{ smaller} rivers. BSB BSB: Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it branched into four headwaters:
UST The first{ river}{ was} the Pishon{ River}, which flowed around the entire region of Havilah,{ a place} where{ there was}{ much} gold. BSB BSB: The name of the first river is the Pishon; it winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
UST In fact, the gold from that region{ was}{ very} pure. A{ type of} fragrant resin and{ valuable} onyx gemstones{ were}{ also} in that region. BSB BSB: And the gold of that land is pure, and bdellium and onyx are found there.
UST The second river{ was} the Gihon{ River}, which flowed around through the entire region of Cush. BSB BSB: The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the whole land of Cush.
UST The third river{ was} the Tigris{ River}, which flowed east of{ the region of} Assyria, and the fourth river{ was} called the Euphrates{ River}. BSB BSB: The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
UST After Yahweh God placed the man in Eden Garden to cultivate it and take care of it, BSB BSB: Then the LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.
UST except I forbid you to eat{ any fruit} from the tree whose fruit enables people to know{ what is} good and{ what is} evil. If you eat{ fruit} from that tree, on that{ same} day you will definitely die.” BSB BSB: but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
UST The man gave names to all the{ different kinds of} livestock and to{ all} the{ different kinds of} birds{ that fly} in the sky, and to all the{ different kinds of} wild animals, but none of them was an appropriate companion to help him. BSB BSB: The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
UST So Yahweh God caused the man to sleep deeply. Then while the man was asleep, God took a rib{ out of the man’ s body} and filled in the place where it had been with flesh{ and healed it}. BSB BSB: So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he slept, He took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the area with flesh.
UST Next Yahweh God made a woman from the rib which he had taken out of the man{’ s body}, and he took her to the man. BSB BSB: And from the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man, He made a woman and brought her to him.
UST { When the man saw her,} he exclaimed,“Finally! Here is someone{ like me} who has bones and flesh from me! I will call her‘woman,’ because{ it was} from{ the body of} a man{ that}{ God} took her.” BSB BSB: And the man said: “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for out of man she was taken.”
UST { During that time} the man and his wife did not wear any clothes, but{ yet} they were not ashamed{ about it}. BSB BSB: And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.
