The Resurrection (Matthew 28:1–10; Mark 16:1–8; John 20:1–9)
UST { When they arrived,} they discovered that somebody had rolled away the stone{ that had been closing off the entrance} to the burial chamber. BSB BSB: They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
UST They went into{ the burial chamber}, but the body of Jesus was not there! BSB BSB: but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
UST They did not know what to think about that. Then suddenly two men stood by them wearing bright, shining clothes! BSB BSB: While they were puzzling over this, suddenly two men in radiant apparel stood beside them.
UST This made the women very frightened. They bowed down low to the ground. The two men said to them,“You should not be looking for someone who is alive in a place where they bury the bodies of dead people! BSB BSB: As the women bowed their faces to the ground in terror, the two men asked them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?
UST He is not here. No, he has come back to life! Recall that while he was still with you in Galilee, he said to you, BSB BSB: He is not here; He has risen! Remember how He told you while He was still in Galilee:
UST ‘They will have to hand me, the Son of Man, over to sinful men. Those men will kill me by nailing me to a cross. But two days later, I will become alive again.’” BSB BSB: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’”
UST The women recalled what Jesus had told them. BSB BSB: Then they remembered His words.
UST So they left the burial chamber and went to Jesus’ 11 representatives and the other disciples of Jesus and told them what happened. BSB BSB: And when they returned from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.
UST The women who told these things to them were Mary from Magdala village, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women who were with them. BSB BSB: It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles.
UST However, Peter decided{ to see whether the story was true}. He ran to the burial chamber. He stooped down{ and looked inside}. He saw the linen cloths{ in which Jesus’ body had been wrapped, but Jesus was not there}. So he left the tomb, puzzling over what had happened. BSB BSB: Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. And after bending down and seeing only the linen cloths, he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
The Road to Emmaus (Mark 16:12–13)
UST They were talking with each other about all the things that had happened{ to Jesus}. BSB BSB: They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.
UST While they were talking and discussing{ those things}, Jesus himself approached them and started walking with them. BSB BSB: And as they talked and deliberated, Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them.
UST But God prevented them from realizing that it was Jesus. BSB BSB: But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him.
UST Jesus said to them,“What have you two been talking about while you were walking?” They stopped, and they had very sad expressions on their faces. BSB BSB: He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stood still, with sadness on their faces.
UST But then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, replied,“You must be the only person who is visiting Jerusalem who does not know about the events that have happened there in recent days!” BSB BSB: One of them, named Cleopas, asked Him, “Are You the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in recent days?”
UST He said to them,“What events?” They replied,“The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth, who was a prophet. God enabled him to perform great miracles and to teach wonderful messages. Most people thought he was wonderful. BSB BSB: “What things?” He asked. “The events involving Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. “This man was a prophet, powerful in speech and action before God and all the people.
UST But our chief priests and leaders handed him over{ to the Roman authorities}. They sentenced him to die, and they killed him by nailing him to a cross. BSB BSB: Our chief priests and rulers delivered Him up to the sentence of death, and they crucified Him.
UST We were hoping that he was the one who would free us Israelites from our enemies! But this does not seem possible now, since three days have passed since the Romans executed him. BSB BSB: But we were hoping He was the One who would redeem Israel. And besides all this, it is the third day since these things took place.
UST In spite of this, some women from our group amazed us. Early this morning they went to the chamber{ where Jesus was buried}, BSB BSB: Furthermore, some of our women astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning,
UST but the body of Jesus was not there! They came back and told us they had seen some angels in a vision. The angels said that Jesus was alive! BSB BSB: but they did not find His body. They came and told us they had seen a vision of angels, who said that Jesus was alive.
UST Then some of those who were with us{ when the women came and said this} went to the burial chamber. They saw that things were exactly as the women had reported. But they did not see Jesus.” BSB BSB: Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had described. But Him they did not see.”
UST You should certainly have known that it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer all those things{ and die}, and then receive great honor from God!” BSB BSB: Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and then to enter His glory?”
UST Then Jesus explained to them all the things that the Scriptures said about himself. He started with what Moses wrote, and then he explained what all the prophets had written. BSB BSB: And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was written in all the Scriptures about Himself.
UST When they had nearly reached the village where the two men were going, it appeared that Jesus was going to keep walking down the road. BSB BSB: As they approached the village where they were headed, He seemed to be going farther.
UST But they pleaded with him{ not to do that}. They said,“Stay with us tonight, because it is late in the afternoon and it will soon be dark.” So he went in{ to the house} to stay with them. BSB BSB: But they pleaded with Him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them.
UST When they all sat down to eat, Jesus took some bread and thanked God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and began to give some to the two men. BSB BSB: While He was reclining at the table with them, He took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to them.
UST And then God enabled them to recognize him. But immediately he disappeared! BSB BSB: Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus—and He disappeared from their sight.
UST They said to each other,“While we were walking along the road and he was talking with us and enabling us to understand the Scriptures, we got so excited inside!{ It all made sense that the Messiah would have to suffer but then receive great honor.}” BSB BSB: They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
UST So they left immediately and returned to Jerusalem. There they found Jesus’ 11 representatives and some others who had gathered together with them. BSB BSB: And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, gathered together
UST They told those two men,“It is true that Jesus has become alive again. He has appeared to Simon!” BSB BSB: and saying, “The Lord has indeed risen and has appeared to Simon!”
UST Then those two men told the others what had happened as they were walking along the road. They also told them how they both recognized Jesus as he broke some bread for them. BSB BSB: Then the two told what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread.
Jesus Appears to the Disciples (John 20:19–23; 1 John 1:1–4)
UST But{ they were not peaceful.} They were startled and afraid because they thought that they were seeing a ghost! BSB BSB: But they were startled and frightened, thinking they had seen a spirit.
UST He said to them,“You should not be alarmed! And you should not doubt{ that I am alive}. BSB BSB: “Why are you troubled,” Jesus asked, “and why do doubts arise in your hearts?
UST Look at{ the wounds in my hands} and my feet! That way you can be sure that it is really I myself. Ghosts do not have bodies, as you see that I have, and you can touch me to prove that my body is real.” BSB BSB: Look at My hands and My feet. It is I Myself. Touch Me and see—for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”
UST After he said that, he showed them{ the wounds in} his hands and his feet. BSB BSB: And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and feet.
UST They were so glad that they could still hardly believe{ that he was really alive}. So he said to them,“Do you have something here that I could eat?” BSB BSB: While they were still in disbelief because of their joy and amazement, He asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”
UST So they gave him a piece of roasted fish. BSB BSB: So they gave Him a piece of broiled fish,
UST While they were watching, he took it and ate it. BSB BSB: and He took it and ate it in front of them.
UST Then he enabled them to understand the{ things that} the Scriptures{ said about him}. He said to them, BSB BSB: Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
UST “This is what you can read in the Scriptures: that the Messiah would suffer{ and die}, but on the third day after that, he would become alive again. BSB BSB: And He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
UST { The Scriptures also say that} those who believe in the Messiah would go and announce on his behalf that God will forgive people who stop sinning. I want you to do this, starting here in Jerusalem and going to every people group in the world. BSB BSB: and in His name repentance and forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem.
UST You{ must tell people that you} saw everything happen to me that the Scriptures said would happen to the Messiah. BSB BSB: You are witnesses of these things.
UST And I am going to send the Holy Spirit to you, as my Father promised. But you must stay in this city until God gives you the power{ of the Holy Spirit}.” BSB BSB: And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
The Ascension (Mark 16:19–20; Acts 1:6–11)
UST Then Jesus led them outside{ the city} until they came near{ the village of} Bethany. There he lifted up his hands and blessed them. BSB BSB: When Jesus had led them out as far as Bethany, He lifted up His hands and blessed them.
UST As he was doing that, he left them and went up to heaven. BSB BSB: While He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven.
UST After they worshiped him, they returned to Jerusalem very joyfully. BSB BSB: And they worshiped Him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
UST Each day they went to the temple and spent time worshiping God there. BSB BSB: praising God continually in the temple.
