The Genealogy of Jesus (Ruth 4:18–22; Luke 3:23–38)

16 UST Jacob was the father of Joseph. Joseph was Mary’ s husband. Mary was the mother of Jesus. Jesus is the one whom we call the Messiah. BSB BSB: and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
The Birth of Jesus (Isaiah 7:10–16; Luke 2:1–7)
19 UST Joseph, who was about to marry her,{ thought that Mary had sex with another man.} Joseph usually did what was right, and he also did not want to shame Mary. So, he decided to say in private that he would not marry her. BSB BSB: Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and was unwilling to disgrace her publicly, he resolved to divorce her quietly.
20 UST While Joseph was deciding what to do, he saw an angel from the Lord while he was sleeping! The angel said to him,“Joseph, King David’ s descendant, do not be reluctant to marry Mary.{ I say that} because it was the Holy Spirit who caused her to become pregnant. BSB BSB: But after he had pondered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to embrace Mary as your wife, for the One conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
21 UST She will have a male child. You should name him‘Jesus,’{ which means‘the Lord rescues’}.{ You should name him that} because he will rescue his people from the sins that they have committed.” BSB BSB: She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”
23 UST “A young woman who has never had sex will become pregnant! She will give birth to a male child. People will name him‘Immanuel.’” The name Immanuel means,“God is with us.” BSB BSB: “Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”).
24 UST After Joseph woke up, he married Mary, which is what the angel from the Lord had told him to do. BSB BSB: When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and embraced Mary as his wife.
25 UST However, he did not have sex with her before she gave birth to a male child. Joseph named the child Jesus. BSB BSB: But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a Son. And he gave Him the name Jesus.
