Victory over Betrayal (John 13:18–30)
1 UST What a good life those people have who help powerless people! When bad things happen to them, Yahweh will rescue them. BSB BSB: For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Blessed is the one who cares for the poor; the LORD will deliver him in the day of trouble.
2 UST Yahweh will protect them and people will see that things turn our well for them as they live in the land.{ Yahweh,} please do not let their enemies do what they want with them. BSB BSB: The LORD will protect and preserve him; He will bless him in the land and refuse to give him over to the will of his foes.
3 UST Yahweh will strengthen them when they are sick;{ Yahweh,} you completely restore them whenever they become ill. BSB BSB: The LORD will sustain him on his bed of illness and restore him from his bed of sickness.
4 UST As for me, I said,“Yahweh, please be merciful to me and heal me.{ I am sick} because I have sinned against you.” BSB BSB: I said, “O LORD, be gracious to me; heal me, for I have sinned against You.”
5 UST My enemies say hateful things about me; they say,“We want him to die so that everyone will forget him!” BSB BSB: My enemies say with malice: “When will he die and be forgotten?”
6 UST Whenever one of them comes to visit{ me}, he says things that mean nothing. He secretly collects harmful information, then he goes outside and tells{ it to everyone}. BSB BSB: My visitor speaks falsehood; he gathers slander in his heart; he goes out and spreads it abroad.
7 UST Everyone who hates me whispers about me to one another; they plot how to harm me. BSB BSB: All who hate me whisper against me; they imagine the worst for me:
8 UST { They say about me,}“Something terrible has happened to him, and he will never get up from where he is lying.” BSB BSB: “A vile disease has been poured into him; he will never get up from where he lies!”
9 UST Even my closest friend, the one I trusted, who shared meals with me, has greatly betrayed me. BSB BSB: Even my close friend whom I trusted, the one who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.
10 UST However, Yahweh, please be merciful to me and make me well, so that I can do to them what they did to me. BSB BSB: But You, O LORD, be gracious to me and raise me up, that I may repay them.
11 UST When you do this, I will know that you are pleased with me, when my enemies{ will not be able to defeat me and so} cannot rejoice about it. BSB BSB: By this I know that You delight in me, for my enemy does not triumph over me.
12 UST As for me, you have helped me because I live honestly, and you will allow me to be with you forever. BSB BSB: In my integrity You uphold me and set me in Your presence forever.
13 UST We should all praise Yahweh, the God whom the people of Israel worship! People should praise him at all times, now and forever! Yes, let it be so! BSB BSB: Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Amen and Amen.
