Psalm 53 53 Psalms Book 2 unfoldingWord® Simplified Text The Fool Says There Is No God (Psalm 14:1–7; Isaiah 59:1–17; Romans 3:9–20)
UST People who do not want to obey God tell themselves that God does not exist. People like that are bad. They do terrible things. Every one of them acts wickedly. BSB BSB: For the choirmaster. According to Mahalath. A Maskil of David. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt; their ways are vile. There is no one who does good.
UST God looks down from heaven at the people on the earth. He wants to find out whether any of them are wise and want to know him. BSB BSB: God looks down from heaven upon the sons of men to see if any understand, if any seek God.
UST But they have all chosen to disobey God. They have all become bad people. Every single one of them acts wickedly. BSB BSB: All have turned away, they have together become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.
UST They take away people’ s possessions until they have nothing left. They do that as easily as they would eat a loaf of bread. The people who do such bad things ought to realize{ that God is going to punish them}. But they do not worship God. BSB BSB: Will the workers of iniquity never learn? They devour my people like bread; they refuse to call upon God.
UST An army came and attacked the Israelites. Its soldiers did not have to be afraid that the Israelites would defeat them. But God made them lose in battle so badly that the survivors were not even able to bury the dead soldiers. This made them very afraid. God regarded this army as insignificant{ compared with his great power}.{ He helped} the Israelites{, and so they} were able to humiliate those soldiers{ by defeating them}. BSB BSB: There they are, overwhelmed with dread, where there was nothing to fear. For God has scattered the bones of those who besieged you. You put them to shame, for God has despised them.
UST I wish that God, whose sanctuary is on Mount Zion, would rescue the Israelite people! When God makes his people prosperous again, the Israelites, those descendants of Jacob, will be very happy. BSB BSB: Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come from Zion! When God restores His captive people, let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad!
