1. The Serpent’s Deception

   (Romans 5:12–21)

2. 1FBVThe serpent was more cunning than any of the other wild animals that the Lord God had made. He asked Eve, “Did God really say that you can't eat fruit from every tree in the garden?”BSBBSB: Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’”
3. 2FBVEve replied to the serpent, “We can eat from the trees in the garden, but not the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden.BSBBSB: The woman answered the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden,
4. 3FBVGod told us, ‘You mustn't eat from that tree, or even touch it, otherwise you'll die.’”BSBBSB: but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You must not eat of it or touch it, or you will die.’”
5. 4FBV“You certainly won't die,” the serpent told Eve.BSBBSB: “You will not surely die,” the serpent told the woman.
6. 5FBV“It's because God knows that as soon as you eat it, you'll see things differently, and you'll be like God, knowing both what is good and what is evil.”BSBBSB: “For God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
7. 6FBVEve saw that the fruit of the tree appeared good to eat. It looked very attractive. She really wanted it so she could become wise. So she took some of its fruit and ate it, and she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it too.BSBBSB: When the woman saw that the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom, she took the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.
8. 7FBVImmediately they saw everything differently and realized they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves up.BSBBSB: And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed together fig leaves and made coverings for themselves.

9. God Arraigns Adam and Eve

10. 8FBVLater they heard the Lord walking in the garden in the evening when the breeze was blowing. Adam and Eve went and hid out of sight of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.BSBBSB: Then the man and his wife heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the breeze of the day, and they hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
11. 9FBVThe Lord God called out to Adam, “Where are you?”BSBBSB: But the LORD God called out to the man, “Where are you?”
12. 10FBV“I heard you walking in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid,” he replied.BSBBSB: “I heard Your voice in the garden,” he replied, “and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.”
13. 11FBV“Who told you that you were naked?” asked the Lord God. “Did you eat fruit from the tree I ordered you not to?”BSBBSB: “Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
14. 12FBV“It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit from the tree, and I ate it,” Adam replied.BSBBSB: And the man answered, “The woman whom You gave me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
15. 13FBVThe Lord God asked Eve, “Why have you done this?” “The serpent tricked me, and so I ate it,” she replied.BSBBSB: Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied, “and I ate.”

16. The Fate of the Serpent

17. 14FBVThen the Lord God told the serpent, “Because of what you've done, you are cursed more than any of the other animals. You will slide along on your belly and eat dust as long as you live.BSBBSB: So the LORD God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and every beast of the field! On your belly will you go, and dust you will eat, all the days of your life.
18. 15FBVI will make sure you and your children, and the woman and her children, are enemies. One of her children will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”BSBBSB: And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

19. The Punishment of Mankind

20. 16FBVHe told Eve, “I will make pregnancy much more difficult, and giving birth will be very painful. However, you will still desire your husband, but he will have control over you.”BSBBSB: To the woman He said: “I will sharply increase your pain in childbirth; in pain you will bring forth children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
21. 17FBVHe told Adam, “Because you did what your wife told you, and ate fruit from the tree after I ordered you, ‘Don't eat fruit from this tree,’ the ground is now cursed because of you. You will have to work painfully hard to grow food from it throughout your whole life.BSBBSB: And to Adam He said: “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat, cursed is the ground because of you; through toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.
22. 18FBVIt will grow thorns and thistles for you, and you will have to eat wild plants.BSBBSB: Both thorns and thistles it will yield for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
23. 19FBVYou will have to sweat to grow enough food to eat until you die and return to the ground. For you were made from dust and you will return to dust.”BSBBSB: By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread, until you return to the ground—because out of it were you taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”
24. 20FBVAdam named his wife Eve, because she was to be the mother of all human beings.BSBBSB: And Adam named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of all the living.

25. The Expulsion from Paradise

26. 21FBVThe Lord God made Adam and Eve clothes from animal skins and dressed them.BSBBSB: And the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.
27. 22FBVThen the Lord God observed, “Look, the human beings have become like one of us, knowing both what is good and what is evil. Now if they take the fruit from the tree of life and eat it, then they'll live forever!”BSBBSB: Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil. And now, lest he reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever...”
28. 23FBVSo the Lord God expelled them from the Garden of Eden. He sent Adam to cultivate the ground from which he'd been made.BSBBSB: Therefore the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
29. 24FBVAfter he drove them out, the Lord God placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden angels and a sword that flashed in every direction. They were to prevent access to the tree of life.BSBBSB: So He drove out the man and stationed cherubim on the east side of the Garden of Eden, along with a whirling sword of flame to guard the way to the tree of life.
