1. 1EUOlen omin silmin nähnyt Kristuksen, kuullut hänen puhuvan ja koskettanut häntä käsilläni – häntä, joka oli olemassa jo ennen maailman luomista. Hän on Jumalan antama elämä, joka on tullut tänne Jumalan luota.BSBBSB: That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our own eyes, which we have gazed upon and touched with our own hands—this is the Word of life.

4. 5EUJumala on antanut edelleen teille välitettäväksi tämän sanoman: Jumala on valo, eikä hänessä ole pimeyttä.BSBBSB: And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you: God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
5. 6EUMe siis valehtelemme, jos sanomme olevamme hänen ystäviään, vaikka jatkamme pimeässä elämistä syntiä tehden.BSBBSB: If we say we have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
6. 7EUMutta jos elämme – niin kuin Kristus – valossa lähellä Jumalaa, silloin meillä on yhteys toisiimme ja Jeesuksen, hänen Poikansa, veri puhdistaa meidät kaikesta synnistä.BSBBSB: But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
7. 8EUJos emme myönnä olevamme syntisiä, petämme itseämme ja kieltäydymme uskomasta tosiasioita.BSBBSB: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
8. 9EUMutta jos tunnustamme syntimme hänelle, voimme luottaa siihen, että Jumala uskollisuudessaan antaa meille Kristuksen teon tähden anteeksi ja puhdistaa meidät kaikesta väärästä.BSBBSB: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
9. 10EUJos väitämme, ettemme ole tehneet syntiä, valehtelemme ja leimaamme Jumalankin valehtelijaksi, sillä hän sanoo meidän olevan syntisiä.BSBBSB: If we say we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar, and His word is not in us.
