Numbers 16 (LXX)

1ΚΑΙ ἐλάλησε Κορὲ υἱὸς Ἰσσάαρ υἱοῦ Καὰθ υἱοῦ Λευὶ καὶ Δαθὰν καὶ Ἀβειρὼν υἱοὶ Ἑλιὰβ καὶ Αὔν υἱὸς Φαλὲθ υἱοῦ Ρουβήν,Now Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath son of Levi, along with some Reubenites—Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth—conducted

2καὶ ἀνέστησαν ἔναντι Μωυσῆ, καὶ ἄνδρες τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ πεντήκοντα καὶ διακόσιοι, ἀρχηγοὶ συναγωγῆς, σύγκλητοι βουλῆς καί ἄνδρες ὀνομαστοί,a rebellion against Moses, along with 250 men of Israel renowned as leaders of the congregation and representatives in the assembly.

3συνέστησαν ἐπὶ Μωυσῆν καὶ Ἀαρὼν καὶ εἶπαν· ἐχέτω ὑμῖν, ὅτι πᾶσα ἡ συναγωγὴ πάντες ἅγιοι, καὶ ἐν αὐτοῖς Κύριος, καὶ διατί κατανίστασθε ἐπὶ τὴν συναγωγὴν Κυρίου;They came together against Moses and Aaron and told them, “You have taken too much upon yourselves! For everyone in the entire congregation is holy, and the LORD is in their midst. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?”

4καὶ ἀκούσας Μωυσῆς ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον,When Moses heard this, he fell facedown.

5καὶ ἐλάλησε πρὸς Κορὲ καὶ πρὸς πᾶσαν αὐτοῦ τὴν συναγωγὴν λέγων· ἐπέσκεπται καὶ ἔγνω ὁ Θεὸς τοὺς ὄντας αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς ἁγίους, καὶ προσηγάγετο πρὸς ἑαυτόν, καὶ οὓς ἐξελέξατο ἑαυτῷ, προσηγάγετο πρὸς ἑαυτόν.Then he said to Korah and all his followers, “Tomorrow morning the LORD will reveal who belongs to Him and who is holy, and He will bring that person near to Himself. The one He chooses He will bring near to Himself.

6τοῦτο ποιήσατε· λάβετε ὑμῖν αὐτοῖς πυρεῖα, Κορὲ καὶ πᾶσα ἡ συναγωγὴ αὐτοῦ,You, Korah, and all your followers are to do as follows: Take censers,

7καὶ ἐπίθετε ἐπ' αὐτὰ πῦρ, καὶ ἐπίθετε ἐπ' αὐτὰ θυμίαμα ἔναντι Κυρίου αὔριον· καὶ ἔσται ὁ ἀνήρ, ὃν ἐκλέλεκται Κύριος, οὗτος ἅγιος· ἱκανούσθω ὑμῖν υἱοὶ Λευί.and tomorrow you are to place fire and incense in them in the presence of the LORD. Then the man the LORD chooses will be the one who is holy. It is you sons of Levi who have taken too much upon yourselves!”

8καὶ εἶπε Μωυσῆς πρὸς Κορέ· εἰσακούσατέ μου, υἱοὶ Λευί.Moses also said to Korah, “Now listen, you sons of Levi!

9μὴ μικρόν ἐστι τοῦτο ὑμῖν, ὅτι διέστειλεν ὁ Θεὸς Ἰσραὴλ ὑμᾶς ἐκ συναγωγῆς Ἰσραὴλ καὶ προσηγάγετο ὑμᾶς πρὸς ἑαυτὸν λειτουργεῖν τὰς λειτουργίας τῆς σκηνῆς Κυρίου καὶ παρίστασθαι ἔναντι τῆς σκηνῆς λατρεύειν αὐτοῖς;Is it not enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel and brought you near to Himself to perform the work at the LORD’s tabernacle, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them?

10καὶ προσηγάγετό σε καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου υἱοὺς Λευὶ μετὰ σοῦ καὶ ζητεῖτε καὶ ἱερατεύειν;He has brought you near, you and all your fellow Levites, but you are seeking the priesthood as well.

11οὕτως σὺ καὶ πᾶσα ἡ συναγωγή σου ἡ συνηθροισμένη πρὸς τὸν Θεόν· καὶ Ἀαρὼν τίς ἐστιν, ὅτι διαγογγύζετε κατ' αὐτοῦ;Therefore, it is you and all your followers who have conspired against the LORD! As for Aaron, who is he that you should grumble against him?”

12καὶ ἀπέστειλε Μωυσῆς καλέσαι Δαθὰν καὶ Ἀβειρὼν υἱοὺς Ἑλιάβ· καὶ εἶπαν· οὐκ ἀναβαίνομεν·Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said, “We will not come!

13μὴ μικρὸν τοῦτο, ὅτι ἀνήγαγες ἡμᾶς εἰς γῆν ρέουσαν γάλα καὶ μέλι ἀποκτεῖναι ἡμᾶς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, ὅτι κατάρχεις ἡμῶν ἄρχων;Is it not enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? Must you also appoint yourself as ruler over us?

14εἰ καὶ εἰς γῆν ρέουσαν γάλα καὶ μέλι εἰσήγαγες ἡμᾶς καὶ ἔδωκας ἡμῖν κλῆρον ἀγροῦ καὶ ἀμπελῶνας, τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἐκείνων ἂν ἐξέκοψας· οὐκ ἀναβαίνομεν.Moreover, you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you gouge out the eyes of these men? No, we will not come!”

15καὶ ἐβαρυθύμησε Μωυσῆς σφόδρα καὶ εἶπε πρὸς Κύριον· μὴ πρόσχῃς εἰς τὴν θυσίαν αὐτῶν· οὐκ ἐπιθύμημα οὐδενὸς αὐτῶν εἴληφα, οὐδὲ ἐκάκωσα οὐδένα αὐτῶν.Then Moses became very angry and said to the LORD, “Do not regard their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them or mistreated a single one of them.”

16καὶ εἶπε Μωυσῆς πρὸς Κορέ· ἁγίασον τὴν συναγωγήν σου καὶ γίνεσθε ἕτοιμοι ἔναντι Κυρίου σὺ καὶ Ἀαρὼν καὶ αὐτοὶ αὔριον.And Moses said to Korah, “You and all your followers are to appear before the LORD tomorrow—you and they and Aaron.

17καὶ λάβετε ἕκαστος τὸ πυρεῖον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπιθήσετε ἐπ' αὐτὰ θυμίαμα καὶ προσάξετε ἔναντι Κυρίου ἕκαστος τὸ πυρεῖον αὐτοῦ, πεντήκοντα καὶ διακόσια πυρεῖα, καὶ σὺ καὶ Ἀαρὼν ἕκαστος τὸ πυρεῖον αὐτοῦ.Each man is to take his censer, place incense in it, and present it before the LORD—250 censers. You and Aaron are to present your censers as well.”

18καὶ ἔλαβεν ἕκαστος τὸ πυρεῖον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπέθηκαν ἐπ' αὐτὰ πῦρ καὶ ἐπέβαλον ἐπ' αὐτὰ θυμίαμα. καὶ ἔστησαν παρὰ τὰς θύρας τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου Μωυσῆς καὶ Ἀαρών.So each man took his censer, put fire and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

19καὶ ἐπισυνέστησεν ἐπ' αὐτοὺς Κορὲ τὴν πᾶσαν αὐτοῦ συναγωγὴν παρὰ τὴν θύραν τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου. καὶ ὤφθη ἡ δόξα Κυρίου πάσῃ τῇ συναγωγῇ.When Korah had gathered his whole assembly against them at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, the glory of the LORD appeared to the whole congregation.

20καὶ ἐλάλησε Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν καὶ Ἀαρὼν λέγων·And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,

21ἀποσχίσθητε ἐκ μέσου τῆς συναγωγῆς ταύτης, καὶ ἐξαναλώσω αὐτοὺς εἰσάπαξ.“Separate yourselves from this congregation so that I may consume them in an instant.”

22καὶ ἔπεσαν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν καὶ εἶπαν· Θεός, Θεὸς τῶν πνευμάτων καὶ πάσης σαρκός, εἰ ἄνθρωπος εἷς ἥμαρτεν, ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν συναγωγὴν ὀργὴ Κυρίου;But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and said, “O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, when one man sins, will You be angry with the whole congregation?”

23καὶ ἐλάλησε Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων·Then the LORD said to Moses,

24λάλησον τῇ συναγωγῇ λέγων· ἀναχωρήσατε κύκλῳ ἀπὸ τῆς συναγωγῆς Κορέ.“Tell the congregation to move away from the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.”

25καὶ ἀνέστη Μωυσῆς καὶ ἐπορεύθη πρὸς Δαθὰν καὶ Ἀβειρών, καὶ συνεπορεύθησαν μετ' αὐτοῦ πάντες οἱ πρεσβύτεροι Ἰσραήλ.So Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.

26καὶ ἐλάλησε πρὸς τὴν συναγωγὴν λέγων· ἀποσχίσθητε ἀπὸ τῶν σκηνῶν τῶν ἀνθρώπων τῶν σκληρῶν τούτων, καὶ μὴ ἅπτεσθε ἀπὸ πάντων, ὧν ἐστιν αὐτοῖς, μὴ συναπόλησθε ἐν πάσῃ τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ αὐτῶν.And he warned the congregation, “Move away now from the tents of these wicked men. Do not touch anything that belongs to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins.”

27καὶ ἀπέστησαν ἀπὸ τῆς σκηνῆς Κορὲ κύκλῳ· καὶ Δαθὰν καὶ Ἀβειρὼν ἐξῆλθον καὶ εἱστήκεισαν παρὰ τὰς θύρας τῶν σκηνῶν αὐτῶν καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ τέκνα αὐτῶν καὶ ἡ ἀποσκευὴ αὐτῶν.So they moved away from the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Meanwhile, Dathan and Abiram had come out and stood at the entrances to their tents with their wives and children and infants.

28καὶ εἶπε Μωυσῆς· ἐν τούτῳ γνώσεσθε ὅτι Κύριος ἀπέστειλέ με ποιῆσαι πάντα τὰ ἔργα ταῦτα, ὅτι οὐκ ἀπ' ἐμαυτοῦ·Then Moses said, “This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things, for it was not my own doing:

29εἰ κατὰ θάνατον πάντων ἀνθρώπων ἀποθανοῦνται οὗτοι, εἰ καὶ κατ' ἐπίσκεψιν πάντων ἀνθρώπων ἐπισκοπὴ ἔσται αὐτῶν, οὐχὶ Κύριος ἀπέσταλκέ με·If these men die a natural death, or if they suffer the fate of all men, then the LORD has not sent me.

30ἀλλ' ἢ ἐν φάσματι δείξει Κύριος, καὶ ἀνοίξασα ἡ γῆ τὸ στόμα αὐτῆς καταπίεται αὐτοὺς καὶ τοὺς οἴκους αὐτῶν καὶ τὰς σκηνὰς αὐτῶν καὶ πάντα, ὅσα ἐστὶν αὐτοῖς, καὶ καταβήσονται ζῶντες εἰς ᾅδου, καὶ γνώσεσθε, ὅτι παρώξυναν οἱ ἄνθρωποι οὗτοι τὸν Κύριον.But if the LORD brings about something unprecedented, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them and all that belongs to them so that they go down alive into Sheol, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt.”

31ὡς δὲ ἐπαύσατο λαλῶν πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους, ἐρράγη ἡ γῆ ὑποκάτω αὐτῶν,As soon as Moses had finished saying all this, the ground beneath them split open,

32καὶ ἠνοίχθη ἡ γῆ καὶ κατέπιεν αὐτοὺς καὶ τοὺς οἴκους αὐτῶν καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀνθρώπους τοὺς ὄντας μετὰ Κορὲ καὶ τὰ κτήνη αὐτῶν.and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households—all Korah’s men and all their possessions.

33καὶ κατέβησαν αὐτοὶ καὶ ὅσα ἐστὶν αὐτῶν ζῶντα εἰς ᾅδου, καὶ ἐκάλυψεν αὐτοὺς ἡ γῆ, καὶ ἀπώλοντο ἐκ μέσου τῆς συναγωγῆς.They went down alive into Sheol with all they owned. The earth closed over them, and they vanished from the assembly.

34καὶ πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ οἱ κύκλῳ αὐτῶν ἔφυγον ἀπὸ τῆς φωνῆς αὐτῶν, ὅτι λέγοντες· μή ποτε καταπίῃ ἡμᾶς ἡ γῆ.At their cries, all the people of Israel who were around them fled, saying, “The earth may swallow us too!”

35καὶ πῦρ ἐξῆλθε παρὰ Κυρίου καὶ κατέφαγε τοὺς πεντήκοντα καὶ διακοσίους ἄνδρας τοὺς προσφέροντας τὸ θυμίαμα.And fire came forth from the LORD and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense.

36ΚΑΙ εἶπε Κύριος πρὸς ΜωυσῆνThen the LORD said to Moses,

37καὶ πρὸς Ἐλεάζαρ τὸν υἱὸν Ἀαρὼν τὸν ἱερέα· ἀνέλεσθε τὰ πυρεῖα τὰ χαλκᾶ ἐκ μέσου τῶν κατακεκαυμένων καὶ τὸ πῦρ τὸ ἀλλότριον τοῦτο σπεῖρον ἐκεῖ,“Tell Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to remove the censers from the flames and to scatter the coals far away, because the censers are holy.

38ὅτι ἡγίασαν τὰ πυρεῖα τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν τούτων ἐν ταῖς ψυχαῖς αὐτῶν· καὶ ποίησον αὐτὰ λεπίδας ἐλατὰς περίθεμα τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ, ὅτι προσηνέχθησαν ἔναντι Κυρίου καὶ ἡγιάσθησαν καὶ ἐγένοντο εἰς σημεῖον τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραήλ.As for the censers of those who sinned at the cost of their own lives, hammer them into sheets to overlay the altar, for these were presented before the LORD, and so have become holy. They will serve as a sign to the Israelites.”

39καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἐλεάζαρ υἱὸς Ἀαρὼν τοῦ ἱερέως τὰ πυρεῖα τὰ χαλκᾶ, ὅσα προσήνεγκαν οἱ κατακεκαυμένοι, καὶ προσέθηκαν αὐτὰ περίθεμα τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ,So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers brought by those who had been burned up, and he had them hammered out to overlay the altar,

40μνημόσυνον τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραήλ, ὅπως ἂν μὴ προσέλθῃ μηδεὶς ἀλλογενής, ὃς οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος Ἀαρών, ἐπιθεῖναι θυμίαμα ἔναντι Κυρίου καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὥσπερ Κορὲ καὶ ἡ ἐπισύστασις αὐτοῦ, καθὰ ἐλάλησε Κύριος ἐν χειρὶ Μωυσῆ αὐτῷ.just as the LORD commanded him through Moses. This was to be a reminder to the Israelites that no outsider who is not a descendant of Aaron should approach to offer incense before the LORD, lest he become like Korah and his followers.

41Καὶ ἐγόγγυσαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ τῇ ἐπαύριον ἐπὶ Μωυσῆν καὶ Ἀαρὼν λέγοντες· ὑμεῖς ἀπεκτάγκατε τὸν λαὸν Κυρίου.The next day the whole congregation of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron, saying, “You have killed the LORD’s people!”

42καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἐπισυστρέφεσθαι τὴν συναγωγὴν ἐπὶ Μωυσῆν καὶ Ἀαρὼν καὶ ὥρμησαν ἐπὶ τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ μαρτυρίου, καὶ τήνδε ἐκάλυψεν αὐτὴν ἡ νεφέλη καὶ ὤφθη ἡ δόξα Κυρίου.But when the congregation gathered against them, Moses and Aaron turned toward the Tent of Meeting, and suddenly the cloud covered it and the glory of the LORD appeared.

43καὶ εἰσῆλθε Μωυσῆς καὶ Ἀαρὼν κατὰ πρόσωπον τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου.Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the Tent of Meeting,

44καὶ ἐλάλησε Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν καὶ Ἀαρὼν λέγων·and the LORD said to Moses,

45ἐκχωρήσατε ἐκ μέσου τῆς συναγωγῆς ταύτης, καὶ ἐξαναλώσω αὐτοὺς εἰσάπαξ. καὶ ἔπεσον ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν.“Get away from this congregation so that I may consume them in an instant.” And Moses and Aaron fell facedown.

46καὶ εἶπε Μωυσῆς πρὸς Ἀαρών· λάβε τὸ πυρεῖον καὶ ἐπίθες ἐπ' αὐτὸ πῦρ ἀπὸ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου καὶ ἐπίβαλε ἐπ' αὐτὸ θυμίαμα καὶ ἀπένεγκε τὸ τάχος εἰς τὴν παρεμβολὴν καὶ ἐξίλασαι περὶ αὐτῶν· ἐξῆλθε γὰρ ὀργὴ ἀπὸ προσώπου Κυρίου, ἦρκται θραύειν τὸν λαόν.Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer, place fire from the altar in it, and add incense. Go quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, because wrath has come out from the LORD; the plague has begun.”

47καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἀαρών, καθάπερ ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ Μωυσῆς, καὶ ἔδραμεν εἰς τὴν συναγωγήν· καὶ ἤδη ἐνῆρκτο ἡ θραῦσις ἐν τῷ λαῷ· καὶ ἐπέβαλε τὸ θυμίαμα καὶ ἐξιλάσατο περὶ τοῦ λαοῦSo Aaron took the censer as Moses had ordered and ran into the midst of the assembly. And seeing that the plague had begun among the people, he offered the incense and made atonement for the people.

48καὶ ἔστη ἀναμέσον τῶν τεθνηκότων καὶ τῶν ζώντων, καὶ ἐκόπασεν ἡ θραῦσις.He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague was halted.

49καὶ ἐγένοντο οἱ τεθνηκότες ἐν τῇ θραύσει τεσσαρεσκαίδεκα χιλιάδες καὶ ἑπτακόσιοι, χωρὶς τῶν τεθνηκότων ἕνεκεν Κορέ.But those who died from the plague numbered 14,700, in addition to those who had died on account of Korah.

50καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν Ἀαρών πρὸς Μωυσῆν ἐπὶ τὴν θύραν τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου, καὶ ἐκόπασεν ἡ θραῦσις.Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, since the plague had been halted.
