Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of what was set apart. So the anger of the LORD burned against the Israelites.
2 IEV अब यहोशू ने अपने कुछ पुरुषों को यरीहो से आई शहर में जाने के लिए कहा, जो बेतेल के पूर्व और बेतावेन के पास था। उसने उनसे कहा,“आई को जाओ और उस क्षेत्र की जासूसी करो।” अतः उन पुरुषों ने जा कर शहर की जासूसी की। BSB BSB: Meanwhile, Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-aven to the east of Bethel, and told them, “Go up and spy out the land.” So the men went up and spied out Ai.
3 IEV जब वे यहोशू के पास लौट आए तो उन्होंने कहा,“आई में केवल कुछ ही लोग हैं। इसलिए उन पर आक्रमण करने के लिए केवल दो या तीन हजार को ही भेज। हमारे सभी सैनिकों को भेजने की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं है।” BSB BSB: On returning to Joshua, they reported, “There is no need to send all the people; two or three thousand men are enough to go up and attack Ai. Since the people of Ai are so few, you need not wear out all our people there.”
4 IEV इसलिए लगभग तीन हजार इस्राएली पुरुष आई पर आक्रमण करने गए। परन्तु वे उन्हें पराजित नहीं कर पाए। इसकी अपेक्षा, उन्हें अपनी जान बचाने के लिए भागना पड़ा। BSB BSB: So about three thousand men went up, but they fled before the men of Ai.
5 IEV शत्रु ने लगभग छत्तीस इस्राएली लोगों को मार डाला और शहर के फाटक से पहाड़ी के नीचे तक बचे हुओं का पीछा किया, वरन् उस स्थान तक जहाँ उन लोगों ने एक पहाड़ी से पत्थर काटे थे। जब इस्राएल के लोगों ने यह देखा, तो वे बहुत डर गए और उनका साहस जाता रहा। BSB BSB: And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six of them, chasing them from the gate as far as the quarries and striking them down on the slopes. So the hearts of the people melted and became like water.
6 IEV यहोशू ने अपना दुख प्रकट करने के लिए अपने कपड़े फाड़ लिए। उसने और इस्राएल के अगुओं ने दुख एवं क्रोध के कारण स्वयं को धरती पर मुँह के बल गिराया। वे यहोवा के पवित्र सन्दूक के सामने अंधेरा होने तक पड़े रहे। BSB BSB: Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell facedown before the ark of the LORD until evening, as did the elders of Israel; and they all sprinkled dust on their heads.
7 IEV तब यहोशू ने प्रार्थना की और कहा,“हे यहोवा परमेश्वर, आप हम इस्राएलियों को यरदन नदी के पार सुरक्षित ले आए हैं; तो अब आप एमोरियों को हमें नाश करने की अनुमति क्यों दे रहे हैं? हमें यरदन नदी की दूसरी ओर ही रुक जाने का निर्णय लेना था। BSB BSB: “O, Lord GOD,” Joshua said, “why did You ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to be destroyed? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan!
8 IEV हे परमेश्वर, मेरे पास आप से कहने के लिए और शब्द नहीं हैं। इस्राएल पराजय में भाग खड़ा हुआ है। अपने शत्रुओं को पीठ दिखा कर हम लज्जित हैं क्योंकि हम अपने शत्रुओं के सामने से भाग खड़े हुए हैं। मैं नहीं जानता कि क्या कहूँ। BSB BSB: O Lord, what can I say, now that Israel has turned its back and run from its enemies?
9 IEV कनानी और इस क्षेत्र में रहने वाले अन्य सभी लोग, इसके विषय में सुनेंगे। तब वे हमें चारों ओर से घेर लेंगे और हम सबको मार डालेंगे! तब आप अपने सम्मान की रक्षा के लिए क्या करेंगे?” BSB BSB: When the Canaanites and all who live in the land hear about this, they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great name?”
10 IEV परन्तु यहोवा ने यहोशू से कहा,“खड़ा हो जा! अपने चेहरे को गन्दगी में डाल कर लेटा मत रह! BSB BSB: But the LORD said to Joshua, “Stand up! Why have you fallen on your face?
11 IEV इस्राएल ने पाप किया है। तुम लोगों ने मेरी आज्ञाओं को नहीं माना है। उन्होंने झूठ बोला है, उन्होंने चोरी की है, और चोरी के सामान को उसे रख लिया है और उसे छिपाने के लिए अपनी सम्पत्ति के साथ रखा है। BSB BSB: Israel has sinned; they have transgressed My covenant that I commanded them, and they have taken some of what was devoted to destruction. Indeed, they have stolen and lied, and they have put these things with their own possessions.
12 IEV यही कारण है कि इस्राएली अपने शत्रुओं को हराने में असमर्थ रहे हैं। यही कारण है कि वे भाग खड़े हुए हैं, और अब तुम स्वयं ही नष्ट हो जाओगे। यदि तुम मेरी आज्ञा के अनुसार यरीहो से ली गई सब वस्तुओं को नष्ट नहीं कर देते हैं, तो मैं अब से तुम्हारी सहायता नहीं करूँगा! BSB BSB: This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies. They will turn their backs and run from their enemies, because they themselves have been set apart for destruction. I will no longer be with you unless you remove from among you whatever is devoted to destruction.
13 IEV अब जा और लोगों से कह कि कल उन्हें स्वयं को अलग करना होगा और यहोवा का सम्मान करने के लिए तैयार रहना होगा। यहोवा, इस्राएल का परमेश्वर यह कहते हैं,“तुमने उन वस्तुओं को अपने लिए रख लिया है जिन्हें मैंने नष्ट करने की आज्ञा दी थी। वे वस्तुएँ मुझे दी जानी चाहिए थी। जब तक तुम यरीहो से ली गई वस्तुओं से छुटकारा नहीं पाते हो जिन्हें तुमने अपनी सम्पत्ति के साथ छिपाया हुआ है, तब तक तुम अपने शत्रुओं को कभी पराजित नहीं कर पाओगे।” BSB BSB: Get up and consecrate the people, saying, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Among you, O Israel, there are things devoted to destruction. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.
14 IEV कल सुबह तुम मेरे सामने गोत्र- गोत्र करके उपस्थित होगे। तब मैं जिस गोत्र का नाम चिट्ठी डालने के द्वारा चुना जाएगा वह मेरे सामने अपने परिवारों के साथ एक- एक करके आएगा और जिस परिवार को मैं चिट्ठी के द्वारा चुनता हूँ वह उनके घराने के हर एक सदस्य के साथ निकट आ जाएगा। जिस घराने को मैं चिट्ठी के द्वारा चुनता हूँ, उनमें से हर एक सदस्य, मेरे सामने आएगा। BSB BSB: In the morning you must present yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe that the LORD selects shall come forward clan by clan, and the clan that the LORD selects shall come forward family by family, and the family that the LORD selects shall come forward man by man.

18 IEV तब यहोशू ने उस परिवार के पुरुषों को आज्ञा दी कि वे एक- एक करके उपस्थित हों जिससे कि दोषी व्यक्ति का चयन किया जा सके। तब यहोवा ने संकेत दिया कि आकान ही वह दोषी व्यक्ति था और उसे यहूदा के लोगों से बाहर ले जाया गया। आकान कर्मी का पुत्र था; कर्मी जब्दी का पुत्र था; और जब्दी जेरह का पुत्र था। BSB BSB: And he had the family of Zabdi come forward man by man, and Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was selected.
19 IEV तब यहोशू ने आकान से कहा,“हे पुत्र, इस्राएल के परमेश्वर, यहोवा के प्रति अपना अपराध मान ले। मुझे बता कि तूने क्या किया है, और मुझसे छिपाने का प्रयास मत कर।” BSB BSB: So Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and make a confession to Him. I urge you to tell me what you have done; do not hide it from me.”
21 IEV यरीहो में मिली वस्तुओं के बीच में मैंने बाबेल का एक सुन्दर अंगरखा देखा था। वहीं पर मैंने दो किलोग्राम चाँदी और कुछ सोना भी देखा जो छः सौ ग्राम वजन का था। मैं उन वस्तुओं का लालच करने लगा, इसलिए मैंने उन्हें ले लिया। मैंने उन्हें अपने तम्बू के नीचे भूमि में गाड़ा है। तू उन्हें वहीं पाएगा। चाँदी को उन सबके नीचे गाड़ दिया है।” BSB BSB: When I saw among the spoils a beautiful cloak from Shinar, two hundred shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”
22 IEV तब यहोशू ने उन वस्तुओं को खोजने के लिए कुछ पुरुषों को भेजा। वे आकान के तम्बू में भाग कर गए और वहाँ छिपी हुई सब वस्तुएँ निकाल लीं। BSB BSB: So Joshua sent messengers who ran to the tent, and there it all was, hidden in his tent, with the silver underneath.
23 IEV उन पुरुषों ने वह सब सामान तम्बू से बाहर निकाला और उन्हें यहोशू और इस्राएलियों के पास ले कर आए। तब उन्होंने यहोवा के लिए भेंट के जैसे उन्हें बाहर रखा। BSB BSB: They took the things from inside the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites, and spread them out before the LORD.
24 IEV तब यहोशू और सब लोग आकान को नीचे घाटी में ले गए। वे चाँदी, अंगरखा, सोना, आकान की पत्नी और पुत्रों और पुत्रियों, और उसके पशुओं और गधे, और भेड़, और उसके तम्बू और उसके पास जो कुछ भी था, वह सब ले गए। BSB BSB: Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the cloak, the bar of gold, his sons and daughters, his oxen and donkeys and sheep, his tent, and everything else he owned, and brought them to the Valley of Achor.
25 IEV यहोशू ने कहा,“मुझे नहीं पता कि तूने हमारे लिए इतनी परेशानी क्यों उत्पन्न की, परन्तु अब यहोवा तुम पर परेशानी डालेंगे।” तब सभी लोगों ने आकान पर पत्थर फेंके कि वह मर जाए, और उन्होंने उन सबको आग से जला दिया, और उन्होंने उन सब पर पत्थर फेंके। BSB BSB: “Why have you brought this trouble upon us?” said Joshua. “Today the LORD will bring trouble upon you!” And all Israel stoned him to death. Then they stoned the others and burned their bodies.
