1गिदोन का पुत्र अबीमेलेक शेकेम शहर में अपनी माँ के भाइयों से बात करने गया। गिदोन को यरूब्बाल भी कहा जाता था। उसने उनसे और अपनी माँ के सब सम्बन्धियों से कहा,Now Abimelech son of Jerubbaal went to his mother’s brothers at Shechem and said to them and to all the clan of his mother,

2“शेकेम के सभी अगुओं से पूछो:‘क्या तुमको ऐसा लगता है कि गिदोन के सब सत्तर पुत्र तुम पर शासन करें तो अच्छा होगा? या क्या तुम पर शासन करने के लिए केवल एक ही व्यक्ति अबीमेलेक का होना उचित होगा?’ और यह मत भूलना कि मैं तुम्हारे परिवार का अंश हूँ!”“Please ask all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember that I am your own flesh and blood.”

3इसलिए अबीमेलेक की माँ के भाइयों ने शेकेम के सब अगुओं को अबीमेलेक की बातें सुनाई। उन्होंने एक- दूसरे से कहा,“हमें अबीमेलेक को हम पर शासन करने देना चाहिए, क्योंकि वह हमारा ही भाई है।”And when his mother’s brothers spoke all these words about him in the presence of all the leaders of Shechem, their hearts were inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.”

4तब शेकेम के अगुओं ने अपने देवता बाल- बरीत के मन्दिर से एक किलोग्राम चाँदी को लिया और अबीमेलेक को दे दिया। उस चाँदी से उसने कुछ परेशानियाँ पैदा करने वालों को उसकी सहायता करने के लिए भुगतान किया, और जहाँ भी वह गया, वे अबीमेलेक के साथ गए।So they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-berith, with which Abimelech hired some worthless and reckless men to follow him.

But Jotham, the youngest son of Jerubbaal, survived, because he hid himself.

6तब शेकेम और बेतमिल्लो के नगरों के अगुवे शेकेम के बड़े बांज वृक्ष के नीचे एकत्र हुए। वहाँ उन्होंने अबीमेलेक को अपना अगुवा नियुक्त किया।Then all the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo gathered beside the oak at the pillar in Shechem and proceeded to make Abimelech their king.

8एक दिन पेड़ों ने उन सभी पर शासन करने के लिए एक राजा नियुक्त करने का निर्णय किया। इसलिए उन्होंने जैतून के पेड़ से कहा,‘तू हमारा राजा हो जा!’One day the trees set out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’

9परन्तु जैतून के पेड़ ने कहा,‘नहीं! मैं तुम्हारा राजा नहीं बनूँगा! पुरुष और देवता मेरे फल से तेल का आनन्द लेते हैं। मैं अन्य पेड़ों पर शासन करने के लिए जैतून का उत्पादन बन्द नहीं करूँगा जिससे उस तेल को बनाया जाता हैं!’But the olive tree replied, ‘Should I stop giving my oil that honors both God and man, to hold sway over the trees?’

10तब पेड़ों ने अंजीर के पेड़ से कहा,‘तू हमारा राजा हो जा!’Then the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and reign over us.’

11परन्तु अंजीर के पेड़ ने उत्तर दिया,‘नहीं! मैं अपने अच्छे मीठे फल का उत्पादन करना बन्द नहीं करना चाहता, इसलिए अन्य पेड़ों पर शासन करना नहीं चाहता!’But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I stop giving my sweetness and my good fruit, to hold sway over the trees?’

12तब पेड़ों ने अँगूर से कहा,‘आ और हमारे राजा बनो!’Then the trees said to the grapevine, ‘Come and reign over us.’

13परन्तु अँगूर ने उत्तर दिया,‘नहीं! मैं तुम्हारा राजा नहीं बनूँगा! मेरे अँगूरों से बनाई गई नई दाखमधु लोगों और देवताओं को बहुत प्रसन्न कर देती है। मैं अँगूरों का उत्पादन करना बन्द नहीं करना चाहता हूँ कि जा कर अन्य पेड़ों पर शासन करूँ!’But the grapevine replied, ‘Should I stop giving my wine that cheers both God and man, to hold sway over the trees?’

14तब सब पेड़ों ने कंटीली झाड़ियों से कहा,‘आ और हमारा राजा बन!’Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and reign over us.’

15कंटीली झाड़ियों ने पेड़ों से कहा,‘यदि तुम सच में मुझे अपना राजा बनना चाहते हैं, तो मेरी छोटी शाखाओं की छाया में आओ। परन्तु यदि तुम ऐसा नहीं करना चाहते हैं, तो मुझे आशा है कि मुझसे आग निकलेगी और लबानोन देश के सब देवदार के पेड़ों को जला देगी!”But the thornbush replied, ‘If you really are anointing me as king over you, come and find refuge in my shade. But if not, may fire come out of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon.’

16यह दृष्टान्त कहने के बाद योताम ने उनसे कहा,“इसलिए अब मैं तुमसे पूछता हूँ, क्या तुम निष्ठावान और गम्भीर थे जब तुमने अबीमेलेक को अपना राजा बनने के लिए नियुक्त किया था? क्या तुमने गिदोन को(जिसे यरूब्बाल भी कहा जाता है) तुम्हारे लिए भलाई करने के लिए सम्मानित करने हेतु योग्य प्रतिफल दिया हैं? नहीं!Now if you have acted faithfully and honestly in making Abimelech king, if you have done well by Jerubbaal and his family, and if you have done to him as he deserves—

17यह मत भूलना कि मेरे पिता ने तुम्हारे लिए युद्ध किया था, और मिद्यानियों की शक्ति से मुक्त कराने के लिए यदि आवश्यक होता तो वह मरने को भी तैयार था।for my father fought for you and risked his life to deliver you from the hand of Midian,

18परन्तु अब तुमने मेरे पिता के परिवार से विद्रोह किया है, और उसके सत्तर पुत्रों को एक विशाल चट्टान पर मार डाला है। और अबीमेलेक को राजा होने के लिए नियुक्त किया है– जो मेरे पिता की रखैल का पुत्र है, न कि उसकी पत्नी का पुत्र शेकेम के लोगों पर शासन करेगा। तुमने ऐसा केवल इसलिए किया है कि वह तुम्हारे सम्बन्धियों में से एक है!but you have risen up against my father’s house this day and killed his seventy sons on a single stone, and you have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the leaders of Shechem because he is your brother—

19इसलिए, यदि आज तुम वास्तव में गिदोन और उसके परिवार के प्रति निष्ठापूर्वक और गम्भीरता से विचार करते हो, तो मुझे आशा है कि वह तुम्हें प्रसन्न करेगा और तुम उसे प्रसन्न करोगे।if you have acted faithfully and honestly toward Jerubbaal and his house this day, then may you rejoice in Abimelech, and he in you.

23तब परमेश्वर ने अबीमेलेक और शेकेम के अगुओं के बीच परेशानी उत्पन्न करने के लिए एक दुष्ट आत्मा भेजी, जिसके कारण शेकेम के अगुओं ने अबीमेलेक से विद्रोह किया।God sent a spirit of animosity between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem and caused them to treat Abimelech deceitfully,

24शेकेम के अगुओं ने गिदोन के सत्तर पुत्रों की हत्या करने में अबीमेलेक की सहायता की थी, जो उसके भाई थे। इसलिए उन्होंने जो किया था उसके लिए अब परमेश्वर ने उन सबको दण्ड देने के लिए दुष्ट आत्मा भेजी।in order that the crime against the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come to justice and their blood be avenged on their brother Abimelech and on the leaders of Shechem, who had helped him murder his brothers.

25शेकेम के अगुओं ने पहाड़ियों पर घातकों को बैठाया। उन लोगों ने हर एक आने जाने वाले को लूट लिया। किसी ने अबीमेलेक को इसके विषय में बताया, इसलिए वह उनके निकट नहीं गया।The leaders of Shechem set up an ambush against Abimelech on the hilltops, and they robbed all who passed by them on the road. So this was reported to Abimelech.

26एबेद का पुत्र, गाल नाम का एक मनुष्य था जो शेकेम में अपने भाइयों के साथ चला गया था। शेकेम के अगुओं ने उस पर भरोसा किया।Meanwhile, Gaal son of Ebed came with his brothers and crossed into Shechem, and the leaders of Shechem put their confidence in him.

27वे अँगूर लेने के लिए अपने दाख के बगीचों में गए। उन्होंने रस बनाने के लिए अँगूरों को रौंदा, और फिर उन्होंने दाखमधु बनाई। तब अपने देवता के भवन में उन्होंने भोज किया, और बहुत भोजन खाया और बहुत दाखमधु पी। तब उन्होंने अबीमेलेक को श्राप दिया।And after they had gone out into the fields, gathered grapes from their vineyards, and trodden them, they held a festival and went into the house of their god; and as they ate and drank, they cursed Abimelech.

Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? You are to serve the men of Hamor, the father of Shechem. Why should we serve Abimelech?

29यदि तुम मुझे अपना अगुवा नियुक्त करो, तो मैं अबीमेलेक से छुटकारा दिलाऊँगा। मैं उससे कहूँगा,‘अपनी सेना तैयार कर! आ और हमसे युद्ध कर!’”If only this people were under my authority, I would remove Abimelech; I would say to him, ‘Muster your army and come out!’”

30गाल ने जो कहा था किसी ने गाल की बातें जबूल को बता दीं जिसे सुन कर वह बहुत क्रोधित हो गया।When Zebul the governor of the city heard the words of Gaal son of Ebed, he burned with anger.

31उसने अबीमेलेक के पास दूत भेजे। उन्होंने उससे कहा,“गाल और उसके भाई यहाँ शेकेम में आए हैं, और वे लोगों को उकसा रहे हैं कि वे तुझ से विद्रोह करें।So he covertly sent messengers to Abimelech to say, “Look, Gaal son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem and are stirring up the city against you.

32तू और तेरे लोग रात के समय उठ कर शहर के बाहर खेतों में छिप जाएँ।Now then, tonight you and the people with you are to come and lie in wait in the fields.

33जैसे ही सुबह सूर्य उगता है, उठो और शहर पर आक्रमण। जब गाल और उसके पुरुष तुझ से युद्ध करने के लिए बाहर आते हैं, तब तू जो, उनके साथ कर सकता हैं।”And in the morning at sunrise, get up and advance against the city. When Gaal and his men come out against you, do to them whatever you are able.”

34तब अबीमेलेक और उसके साथी रात के समय उठ गए। वे चार समूहों में विभाजित हो गए और शेकेम के निकट खेतों में जा कर छिप गए।So Abimelech and all his troops set out by night and lay in wait against Shechem in four companies.

35अगली सुबह, गाल बाहर गया और शहर के प्रवेश द्वार पर खड़ा हो गया। जब वह वहाँ खड़ा था, अबीमेलेक और उसके सैनिक अपने छिपने वाले स्थानों से बाहर आए और शहर की ओर चलना आरम्भ कर दिया।Now Gaal son of Ebed went out and stood at the entrance of the city gate just as Abimelech and his men came out from their hiding places.

36जब गाल ने सैनिकों को देखा, तो उसने जबूल से कहा,“देखो, पर्वत से लोग नीचे आ रहे हैं!” परन्तु जबूल ने कहा,“आप केवल पहाड़ियों पर पेड़ों की छाया देख रहे हैं। वे लोग नहीं हैं; वे केवल लोगों के समान दिखते हैं।”When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the mountains!” But Zebul replied, “The shadows of the mountains look like men to you.”

37परन्तु गाल ने फिर से देखा, और कहा,“देखो! देश के बीचों बीच में लोग नीचे आ रहे हैं! उनमें से एक समूह बांज वृक्ष के रास्ते से नीचे आ रहा है जहाँ लोग मरे हुए लोगों की आत्माओं से बात करने का दावा करते हैं!”Then Gaal spoke up again, “Look, people are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming by way of the Diviners’ Oak.”

38जबूल ने गाल से कहा,“अब क्या तेरा डींग मारना अच्छा है? तूने कहा था,‘अबीमेलेक कौन है कि हमें उसकी सेवा करनी चाहिए?’ क्या ये वे पुरुष नहीं हैं जिनसे तू घृणा करता हैं? अब बाहर जा और उनसे युद्ध कर।“Where is your gloating now?” Zebul replied. “You said, ‘Who is Abimelech that we should serve him?’ Are these not the people you ridiculed? Go out now and fight them!”

39तब गाल अबीमेलेक की सेना से युद्ध करने के लिए शेकेम के लोगों को शहर के बाहर ले गया।So Gaal went out before the leaders of Shechem and fought against Abimelech,

40अबीमेलेक और उसके पुरुषों ने उनका पीछा किया, और इसके पहले कि वे शहर के फाटक में सुरक्षित लौटते उन्होंने गाल के कई लोगों को मार डाला।but Abimelech pursued him, and Gaal fled before him. And many Shechemites fell wounded all the way to the entrance of the gate.

41अबीमेलेक तब शेकेम से लगभग पाँच मील दूर अरूमा में रहा, और जबूल के पुरुषों ने गाल और उसके भाइयों को शेकेम छोड़ने के लिए विवश कर दिया।Abimelech stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his brothers out of Shechem.

42अगले दिन, शेकेम के लोग शहर छोड़ने और खेतों में कार्य करने के लिए तैयार हो गए। किसी ने अबीमेलेक को इसकी सूचना दी,The next day the people of Shechem went out into the fields, and this was reported to Abimelech.

43उसने अपने पुरुषों को तीन समूहों में विभाजित किया, और उन्हें खेतों में छिप जाने के लिए कहा। इसलिए उन्होंने ऐसा किया। और जब उन्होंने शहर से बाहर आने वाले लोगों को देखा, तो वे कूद पड़े और उन पर आक्रमण कर दिया।So he took his men, divided them into three companies, and lay in wait in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he rose up against them and attacked them.

44अबीमेलेक और उसके साथी शहर के फाटक की ओर भागे। अन्य दो समूह खेतों में लोगों के पीछे भागे और उन पर आक्रमण किया।Then Abimelech and the companies with him rushed forward and took their stand at the entrance of the city gate. The other two companies rushed against all who were in the fields and struck them down.

45अबीमेलेक और उसके पुरुषों ने पूरा दिन युद्ध किया। उन्होंने शहर पर अधिकार कर लिया और सब लोगों को मार डाला। उन्होंने सब इमारतों को तोड़ दिया, और खण्डहरों पर नमक डाल दिया कि वहाँ कुछ उपजे।And all that day Abimelech fought against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he demolished the city and sowed it with salt.

46जब शेकेम के बाहर गुम्मट में रहने वाले अगुओं ने सुना कि क्या हुआ है, तो वे भाग गए और किले में छिप गए, वह उनके देवता एलबरीत का मन्दिर भी था।On hearing of this, all the leaders in the tower of Shechem entered the inner chamber of the temple of El-berith.

47परन्तु किसी ने अबीमेलेक से कहा कि सभी अगुवे वहाँ एकत्र हुए हैं।And when Abimelech was told that all the leaders in the tower of Shechem were gathered there,

48अतः वह और उसके साथ रहने वाले सब लोग शेकेम के निकट सल्मोन पर्वत पर चढ़ गए। अबीमेलेक ने कुल्हाड़ी से पेड़ों की कुछ शाखाओं को काट दिया, और उन्हें अपने कंधों पर रखा। तब उसने सब साथियों से कहा, शीघ्रता से वही करो जो मैं करता हूँ।”he and all his men went up to Mount Zalmon. Abimelech took his axe in his hand and cut a branch from the trees, which he lifted to his shoulder, saying to his men, “Hurry and do what you have seen me do.”

49इसलिए उसके सब लोग शाखाओं को काट कर अबीमेलेक के पीछे पर्वत से नीचे ले गए। वे किले में गए और उसकी दीवारों पर शाखाओं को ढेर कर दिया। तब उन्होंने आग लगा दी, और आग ने किले को जला दिया और जितने भी लोग भीतर थे सबको मार डाला। वे सब लोग जो किले के भीतर थे– लगभग हजारों पुरुष और स्त्रियाँ– सब मर गए।So each man also cut his own branch and followed Abimelech. Then they piled the branches against the inner chamber and set it on fire above them, killing everyone in the tower of Shechem, about a thousand men and women.

50तब अबीमेलेक और उसके लोग तेबेस शहर गए। उन्होंने इसे घेर लिया और उस पर अधिकार कर लिया।Then Abimelech went to Thebez, encamped against it, and captured it.

51परन्तु शहर के भीतर एक दृढ़ गुम्मट था। इसलिए शहर के सब पुरुष, स्त्रियाँ और अगुवे गुम्मट में भाग गए। और भीतर से द्वार बन्द कर दिया। फिर वे गुम्मट की छत पर चढ़ गए।But there was a strong tower inside the city, and all the men, women, and leaders of the city fled there. They locked themselves in and went up to the roof of the tower.

52अबीमेलेक और उसके लोग गुम्मट के समीप आए और वह आग लगा कर द्वार को जला देने के लिए अबीमेलेक द्वार के निकट आया।When Abimelech came to attack the tower, he approached its entrance to set it on fire.

53परन्तु जब अबीमेलेक द्वार के निकट आया, तब एक स्त्री ने छत पर से पीसने वाले पत्थर के ऊपरी भाग को उस पर गिरा दिया, जिसने उसकी खोपड़ी की हड्डी को तोड़ दिया।But a woman dropped an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head, crushing his skull.

54अबीमेलेक ने शीघ्र ही से उस युवक को बुलाया जो अबीमेलेक के हथियारों को उठाया करता था, और कहा,“अपनी तलवार खींच और मुझे मार दें! मैं नहीं चाहता कि लोग कहें कि‘एक स्त्री ने अबीमेलेक को मार डाला।’” अतः युवा ने अपनी तलवार अबीमेलेक के शरीर में घोंप दी, और अबीमेलेक की मृत्यु हो गई।He quickly called his armor-bearer, saying, “Draw your sword and kill me, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” So Abimelech’s armor-bearer ran his sword through him, and he died.

55जब इस्राएली सैनिकों ने देखा कि अबीमेलेक मर चुका है, तो वे सब अपने- अपने घर लौट आए।And when the Israelites saw that Abimelech was dead, they all went home.

56इस तरह परमेश्वर ने अबीमेलेक को उसके सब बुरे कार्यों का दण्ड दिया उसने अपने सत्तर भाइयों की हत्या करके अपने पिता के साथ बुराई की थी।In this way God repaid the wickedness that Abimelech had done to his father in murdering his seventy brothers.

57परमेश्वर ने शेकेम के लोगों को भी उनके बुरे कार्यों के लिए दण्ड दिया। इन सब घटनाओं ने यरूब्बाल के पुत्र योताम का अभिशाप सच कर दिया।And God also brought all the wickedness of the men of Shechem back upon their own heads. So the curse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came upon them.
