1 UDB उस समय, यहूदा अपने भाइयों से अलग होकर अदुल्लाम जो पर्वतीय प्रदेश था वहाँ चला गया और वहाँ एक पुरुष के साथ रहने लगा। जिसका नाम हीरा था। BSB BSB: About that time, Judah left his brothers and settled near a man named Hirah, an Adullamite.
2 UDB वहाँ शूआ नाम के एक कनानी पुरुष की पुत्री को यहूदा ने देखा। उससे विवाह करके उसके साथ सोया। BSB BSB: There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua, and he took her as a wife and slept with her.
3 UDB वह गर्भवती हो गई और उसने एक पुत्र को जन्म दिया। उनके पिता ने उसे एर नाम दिया। BSB BSB: So she conceived and gave birth to a son, and Judah named him Er.
4 UDB बाद में वह फिर गर्भवती हुई और उसने दूसरे पुत्र को जन्म दिया, जिसे उसने ओनान नाम दिया। BSB BSB: Again she conceived and gave birth to a son, and she named him Onan.
5 UDB कई सालों बाद यहूदा और उसका परिवार कजीब में रहने गए। वहाँ उसकी पत्नी ने एक और पुत्र को जन्म दिया जिसका नाम उन्होंने शेला रखा। BSB BSB: Then she gave birth to another son and named him Shelah; it was at Chezib that she gave birth to him.
6 UDB यहूदा के पुत्र एर के बड़े हो जाने पर यहूदा ने उसका विवाह तामार नाम की एक युवती से करवाया। BSB BSB: Now Judah acquired a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.
7 UDB परन्तु एर ने यहोवा की दृष्टि में दुष्टता की इसलिए यहोवा ने उसको मार डाला। BSB BSB: But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; so the LORD put him to death.
8 UDB तब यहूदा ने ओनान से कहा," तेरा बड़ा भाई बिना किसी पुत्र के मर गया। इसलिए उसकी विधवा से शादी कर और उसके साथ सो। हमारे रीति-रिवाज के अनुसार ऐसा ही करना चाहिए।" BSB BSB: Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife. Perform your duty as her brother-in-law and raise up offspring for your brother.”
9 UDB ओनान जानता था कि यदि वह ऐसा करेगा तो इससे पैदा हुई संतान उसकी नहीं मानी जाएंगी। ओनान ने जब भी तामार के साथ शारीरिक सम्बन्ध बनाया उसने भूमि पर अपना वीर्य फेंक दिया। जिससे कि तामार गर्भवती न हो कि उसके बड़े भाई के नाम से वंश चले। BSB BSB: But Onan knew that the offspring would not belong to him; so whenever he would sleep with his brother’s wife, he would spill his seed on the ground so that he would not produce offspring for his brother.
10 UDB यहोवा ने उसके इस कर्म को दुष्टता मानकर उसे भी मार डाला। BSB BSB: What he did was wicked in the sight of the LORD, so He put Onan to death as well.
11 UDB तब यहूदा ने अपनी बहू तामार से कहा, "अपने पिता के पास चली जा लेकिन किसी से विवाह न करना। जब मेरा पुत्र शेला बड़ा हो जाएगा तब मैं तेरा विवाह उससे करा दूँगा। परन्तु सच तो यह था कि यहूदा नहीं चाहता था कि शेला तामार से विवाह करे क्योंकि वह डरता था कि शेला भी मर जाएगा जैसे उसके दो बड़े भाई मर गए थे। तामार यहूदा की बात मानकर अपने पिता के घर चली गई। BSB BSB: Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s house until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He may die too, like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s house.
12 UDB कुछ वर्षों बाद यहूदा की पत्नी, जो शूआ की पुत्री थी, मर गई और उसके शोक का समय पूरा हो गया तब यहूदा ने तिम्ना जाने का विचार किया क्योंकि वहाँ उसके सेवक उसकी भेड़ों का ऊन कतरवा रहे थे। उसका मित्र अदुल्लामवासी हीरा भी उसके साथ था। BSB BSB: After a long time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had finished mourning, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah.
13 UDB किसी ने तामार को समाचार दिया, "तेरा ससुर तिम्ना जा रहा है भेड़ों का ऊन कतरने वालों की सहायता करने के लिए।" BSB BSB: When Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep,”
14 UDB वह जानती थी कि शेला वयस्क हो गया है परन्तु यहूदा ने उसे उसकी पत्नी नहीं बनाया। इसलिए उसने विधवा के वस्त्र उतारकर अपने मुख पर परदा डाला कि कोई उसे पहचान न सके और तिम्ना के मार्ग पर एनैम नगर के फाटक पर बैठ गई। BSB BSB: she removed her widow’s garments, covered her face with a veil to disguise herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah. For she saw that although Shelah had grown up, she had not been given to him as a wife.
15 UDB उसे देखकर यहूदा ने समझा कि वह वेश्या है। वह उसे पहचान नहीं पाया क्योंकि उसका मुँह ढंका हुआ था। वह वहाँ बैठी थी जहाँ वेश्याएं अक्सर बैठती थीं। BSB BSB: When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute because she had covered her face.
16 UDB यहूदा को अनुभव नहीं हुआ कि वह उसकी बहू थी। तो उसने उससे कहा, "मुझे अपने साथ सोने दे।" उसने उत्तर दिया," तू मुझे इसके बदले में क्या देगा?" BSB BSB: Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.” “What will you give me for sleeping with you?” she inquired.
17 UDB उसने उत्तर दिया, "मैं अपनी बकरियों में से एक बच्चा तेरे पास भेज दूँगा।" उसने कहा," तू जब तक वह बकरी का बच्चा भिजवाएगा तब तक मेरे पास कुछ रखवा दे।" BSB BSB: “I will send you a young goat from my flock,” Judah answered. But she replied, “Only if you leave me something as a pledge until you send it.”
18 UDB उसने कहा," तू क्या चाहती है कि मैं तेरे पास क्या रख दूँ?" उसने कहा "अपनी मुहर वाली अंगूठी और जिस पर तेरा नाम खुदा हुआ है जो एक धागे से तेरे गले में बंधी है तथा वह छड़ी जो तेरे हाथ में है।" उसने वह सब उसके पास रख दिया और उसके साथ सोया। परिणाम-स्वरूप वह गर्भवती हो गई। BSB BSB: “What pledge should I give you?” he asked. She answered, “Your seal and your cord, and the staff in your hand.” So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.
19 UDB घर लौटने के बाद उसने परदा हटा लिया और फिर अपनी विधवा के कपड़े पहन लिए। BSB BSB: Then Tamar got up and departed. And she removed her veil and put on her widow’s garments again.
20 UDB यहूदा ने अदुल्लाम के एक अपने मित्र के हाथ बकरी का बच्चा उस स्त्री के पास भिजवाया, जैसा उसने उसे वचन दिया था। लेकिन उसके मित्र को वह स्त्री कहीं नहीं मिली। BSB BSB: Now when Judah sent his friend Hirah the Adullamite with the young goat to collect the items he had left with the woman, he could not find her.
21 UDB इसलिए उसके दोस्त ने वहाँ रहने वाले लोगों से पूछा, "वह वेश्या कहाँ है जो एनैम के मार्ग के किनारे बैठी थी?" उन्होंने उत्तर दिया, "यहाँ कभी कोई वेश्या नहीं थी!" 22 UDB तब वह यहूदा के पास वापस गया और कहा, "मुझे वह नहीं मिली। इसके अतिरिक्त, उस नगर में रहने वाले पुरुषों ने कहा, 'यहाँ कोई वेश्या कभी नहीं थी।'" BSB BSB: So Hirah returned to Judah and said, “I could not find her, and furthermore, the men of that place said, ‘No shrine prostitute has been here.’”
23 UDB यहूदा ने कहा, "उसे वे वस्तुएं रखने दे क्योंकि यदि हम उसकी खोज करेंगे तो लोग हम पर हँसेगे। मैंने तो यह बकरी का बच्चा भेज कर अपना वचन निभाया लेकिन वह तुझे नहीं मिली कि उसे वह बकरी का बच्चा दे सके।" BSB BSB: “Let her keep the items,” Judah replied. “Otherwise we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you could not find her.”
24 UDB लगभग तीन महीने बाद, किसी ने यहूदा से कहा, "तेरी बहू तामार एक वेश्या बन गई है और अब वह गर्भवती है!" यहूदा ने कहा, "उसे नगर के बाहर निकालो और उसे मार डालो!" BSB BSB: About three months later, Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has prostituted herself, and now she is pregnant.” “Bring her out!” Judah replied. “Let her be burned to death!”
25 UDB जब वे उसे नगर से बाहर ला रहे थे तब उसने अंगूठी और छड़ी किसी के हाथ यहूदा के पास भिजवा दी और कहलवाया कि जिस पुरूष से वह गर्भवती है, उसी की ये वस्तुएं हैं।" उसने उस वाहक से यह भी कहा कि उससे कहना, "इस अंगूठी और इसमें पिरोये गए धागे तथा छड़ी को पहचान ले कि वे किसके हैं?" BSB BSB: As she was being brought out, Tamar sent a message to her father-in-law: “I am pregnant by the man to whom these items belong.” And she added, “Please examine them. Whose seal and cord and staff are these?”
26 UDB जब उस व्यक्ति ने ऐसा किया, तो यहूदा ने अंगूठी और छड़ी को पहचाना। वह बोला, वह मुझसे ज्यादा सही है क्योंकि मैंने प्रतिज्ञा की थी कि मैं शेला के साथ उसका विवाह करूँगा और अपने पुत्र शेला से उसका विवाह नहीं किया।" यहूदा फिर कभी उसके साथ नहीं सोया। BSB BSB: Judah recognized the items and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not have relations with her again.
27 UDB जब जन्म देने का समय आया, तो वह आश्चर्यचकित थी कि उसके गर्भ में जुड़वां लड़के थे। BSB BSB: When the time came for Tamar to give birth, there were twins in her womb.
28 UDB जब वह जन्म दे रही थी, उनमें से एक ने अपना हाथ बाहर निकला। दाई ने उसकी कलाई पर एक लाल रंग का धागा बांधा और कहा, "यह पहले पैदा हुआ है।" BSB BSB: And as she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it around his wrist. “This one came out first,” she announced.
29 UDB परन्तु उस संतान ने अपना हाथ वापस अन्दर खींच लिया। तब दूसरा बच्चा पहले पैदा हुआ। दाई ने कहा," तू ही पहले बाहर निकलने में समर्थ हुए।" इसलिए उन्होंने उसका नाम पेरेस रखा। जो सुनने में इब्रानी शब्द के समान लगता है जिसका अर्थ है "खुल पड़ना।" BSB BSB: But when he pulled his hand back and his brother came out, she said, “You have broken out first!” So he was named Perez.
30 UDB तब उसका छोटा भाई, जिसकी कलाई पर लाल रंग का धागा बंधा था, बाहर निकला। उसने उसका नाम जेरह रखा। इस इब्रानी शब्द का अर्थ है "सुबह की लाली।" BSB BSB: Then his brother came out with the scarlet thread around his wrist, and he was named Zerah.
