1Che direm dunque? Rimarremo noi nel peccato onde la grazia abbondi?What then shall we say? Shall we continue in sin so that grace may increase?

2Così non sia. Noi che siam morti al peccato, come vivremmo ancora in esso?Certainly not! How can we who died to sin live in it any longer?

3O ignorate voi che quanti siamo stati battezzati in Cristo Gesù, siamo stati battezzati nella sua morte?Or aren’t you aware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?

4Noi siam dunque stati con lui seppelliti mediante il battesimo nella sua morte, affinché, come Cristo è risuscitato dai morti mediante la gloria del Padre, così anche noi camminassimo in novità di vita.We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life.

5Perché, se siamo divenuti una stessa cosa con lui per una morte somigliante alla sua, lo saremo anche per una risurrezione simile alla sua, sapendo questo:For if we have been united with Him like this in His death, we will certainly also be united with Him in His resurrection.

6che il nostro vecchio uomo è stato crocifisso con lui, affinché il corpo del peccato fosse annullato, onde noi non serviamo più al peccato;We know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be rendered powerless, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.

7poiché colui che è morto, è affrancato dal peccato.For anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

8Ora, se siamo morti con Cristo, noi crediamo che altresì vivremo con lui,Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him.

9sapendo che Cristo, essendo risuscitato dai morti, non muore più; la morte non lo signoreggia più.For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, He cannot die again; death no longer has dominion over Him.

10Poiché il suo morire fu un morire al peccato, una volta per sempre; ma il suo vivere è un vivere a Dio.The death He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life He lives, He lives to God.

11Così anche voi fate conto d’esser morti al peccato, ma viventi a Dio, in Cristo Gesù.So you too must count yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12Non regni dunque il peccato nel vostro corpo mortale per ubbidirgli nelle sue concupiscenze;Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires.

13e non prestate le vostre membra come strumenti d’iniquità al peccato; ma presentate voi stessi a Dio come di morti fatti viventi, e le vostre membra come strumenti di giustizia a Dio;Do not present the parts of your body to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and present the parts of your body to Him as instruments of righteousness.

14perché il peccato non vi signoreggerà, poiché non siete sotto la legge, ma sotto la grazia.For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

15Che dunque? Peccheremo noi perché non siamo sotto la legge ma sotto la grazia? Così non sia.What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law, but under grace? Certainly not!

16Non sapete voi che se vi date a uno come servi per ubbidirgli, siete servi di colui a cui ubbidite: o del peccato che mena alla morte o dell’ubbidienza che mena alla giustizia?Do you not know that when you offer yourselves as obedient slaves, you are slaves to the one you obey, whether you are slaves to sin leading to death, or to obedience leading to righteousness?

17Ma sia ringraziato Iddio che eravate bensì servi del peccato, ma avete di cuore ubbidito a quel tenore d’insegnamento che v’è stato trasmesso;But thanks be to God that, though you once were slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were committed.

18ed essendo stati affrancati dal peccato, siete divenuti servi della giustizia.You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

19Io parlo alla maniera degli uomini, per la debolezza della vostra carne; poiché, come già prestaste le vostre membra a servizio della impurità e della iniquità per commettere l’iniquità, così prestate ora le vostre membra a servizio della giustizia per la vostra santificazione.I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to escalating wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness.

20Poiché, quando eravate servi del peccato, eravate liberi riguardo alla giustizia.For when you were slaves to sin, you were free of obligation to righteousness.

21Qual frutto dunque avevate allora delle cose delle quali oggi vi vergognate? poiché la fine loro è la morte.What fruit did you reap at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? The outcome of those things is death.

22Ma ora, essendo stati affrancati dal peccato e fatti servi a Dio, voi avete per frutto la vostra santificazione, e per fine la vita eterna:But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the fruit you reap leads to holiness, and the outcome is eternal life.

23poiché il salario del peccato è la morte; ma il dono di Dio è la vita eterna in Cristo Gesù, nostro Signore.For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
