1さて、パリサイ人の中にニコデモという人がいた。ユダヤ人の指導者であった。Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews.

2この人が夜、イエスのもとに来て言った。「ラビ、私たちは、あなたが神から来られた教師であることを知っています。神がともにおられなければ、あなたが行っておられるようなしるしを行える者はいないからです。」He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs You are doing if God were not with him.”

3イエスは答えられた。「まことに、まことに、あなたに告げます。人は新しく生まれなければ、神の国を見ることはできません。」Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

4ニコデモは言った。「人は年を取ってから、どうして生まれることができるでしょう。もう一度母の胎内に入って生まれることができるでしょうか。」“How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time to be born?”

5イエスは答えられた。「まことに、まことに、あなたに告げます。人は水と霊から生まれなければ、神の国に入ることはできません。Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.

6肉から生まれるものは肉であり、霊から生まれるものは霊です。Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit.

7『あなたがたは新しく生まれなければならない』と私が言ったことを、不思議に思ってはなりません。Do not be amazed that I said, ‘You must be born again.’

8風は思いのままに吹きます。あなたはその音を聞いても、どこから来てどこへ行くのか知りません。霊から生まれる者も皆、そのようです。」The wind blows where it wishes. You hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

9ニコデモは「どうしてそのようなことがあり得るのですか」と尋ねた。“How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.

10イエスは答えられた。「あなたはイスラエルの教師なのに、これらのことが分からないのですか。“You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and you do not understand these things?

11まことに、まことに、あなたに告げます。われわれは知っていることを語り、見たことをあかししているのに、あなたがたはわれわれのあかしを受け入れません。Truly, truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, and yet you people do not accept our testimony.

12私が地上のことを話してもあなたがたが信じないなら、天上のことを話した時、どうして信じるでしょう。If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?

13天から下って来た者、すなわち天にいる人の子のほかには、だれも天に上ったことはありません。No one has ascended into heaven except the One who descended from heaven—the Son of Man.

14モーセが荒野で蛇を上げたように、人の子も上げられなければなりません。Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,

15それは、この方を信じる者がだれも滅びることなく、永遠の命を持つためです。that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.

16神は世をこれほどまでに愛し、そのひとり子をお与えになりました。それは、この方を信じる者がだれも滅びることなく、永遠の命を持つためです。For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

17神が御子を世に遣わされたのは、世を裁くためではなく、御子を通して世が救われるためです。For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.

18御子を信じる者は裁かれません。信じない者はすでに裁かれています。神のひとり子の名を信じていないからです。Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

19その裁きとは、光が世に来たのに、人々が光よりも闇を愛したということです。彼らの行いが悪かったからです。And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness rather than the Light because their deeds were evil.

20悪を行う者は皆、光を憎み、自分の行いが明るみに出されないように、光のもとへ来ません。Everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

21しかし、真理を行う者は、自分の行いが神にあってなされたことが明らかになるように、光のもとへ来ます。」But whoever practices the truth comes into the Light, so that it may be seen clearly that what he has done has been accomplished in God.”

22この後、イエスは弟子たちとユダヤ地方へ行き、彼らとともにそこに滞在して、バプテスマを授けておられた。After this, Jesus and His disciples went into the Judean countryside, where He spent some time with them and baptized.

23ヨハネもサリムに近いアイノンでバプテスマを授けていた。そこには水が豊かにあったからである。人々は来てバプテスマを受けた。Now John was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because the water was plentiful there, and people kept coming to be baptized.

24ヨハネはまだ投獄されていなかった。(For John had not yet been thrown into prison.)

25ところが、ヨハネの弟子たちとあるユダヤ人たちとの間で、清めについての議論が起こった。Then a dispute arose between John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the issue of ceremonial washing.

26彼らはヨハネのもとに来て言った。「ラビ、見よ、ヨルダン川の向こうであなたと一緒にいて、あなたがあかしされた方が、バプテスマを授けています。皆がその方のところへ行っています。」So John’s disciples came to him and said, “Look, Rabbi, the One who was with you beyond the Jordan, the One you testified about—He is baptizing, and everyone is going to Him.”

27ヨハネは答えた。「人は、天から与えられなければ、何も受けることができない。John replied, “A man can receive only what is given him from heaven.

28『私はキリストではなく、その方より先に遣わされた者である』と私が言ったことについて、あなたがた自身が私の証人である。You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but am sent ahead of Him.’

29花嫁を持つ者が花婿である。花婿の友人はそばに立ってその声を聞き、花婿の声を聞いて大いに喜ぶ。こうして、私の喜びは満ちた。The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom stands and listens for him, and is overjoyed to hear the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.

30あの方はますます栄え、私は衰えなければならない。He must increase; I must decrease.

31上から来る方はすべてのものの上におられる。地から出た者は地に属し、地のことを語る。天から来る方はすべてのものの上におられる。The One who comes from above is above all. The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks as one from the earth. The One who comes from heaven is above all.

32この方は見聞きしたことをあかしされるが、だれもそのあかしを受け入れない。He testifies to what He has seen and heard, yet no one accepts His testimony.

33そのあかしを受け入れた者は、神が真実であることに、自ら証印を押したのである。Whoever accepts His testimony has certified that God is truthful.

34神が遣わされた方は神の言葉を語られる。神は限りなく聖霊をお与えになるからである。For the One whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit.

35父は御子を愛し、すべてのものをその手に委ねられた。The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in His hands.

36御子を信じる者には永遠の命がある。しかし、御子に従わない者は命を見ることがなく、神の怒りがその上にとどまる。」Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. Whoever rejects the Son will not see life. Instead, the wrath of God remains on him.”
