1. Elkanah and His Wives

   (Psalm 113:1–9)

2. 1JPSNOW THERE was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of the hill-country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.BSBBSB: Now there was a man named Elkanah who was from Ramathaim-zophim in the hill country of Ephraim. He was the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.
3. 2JPSAnd he had two wives: the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah; and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.BSBBSB: He had two wives, one named Hannah and the other Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.
4. 3JPSAnd this man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there priests unto the LORD.BSBBSB: Year after year Elkanah would go up from his city to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of Hosts at Shiloh, where Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to the LORD.
5. 4JPSAnd it came to pass upon a day, when Elkanah sacrificed, that he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions;BSBBSB: And whenever the day came for Elkanah to present his sacrifice, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.
6. 5JPSbut unto Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah, but the LORD had shut up her womb.BSBBSB: But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved her even though the LORD had closed her womb.
7. 6JPSAnd her rival vexed her sore, to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.BSBBSB: Because the LORD had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival would provoke her viciously to taunt her.
8. 7JPSAnd as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she vexed her; therefore she wept, and would not eat.BSBBSB: And this went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival taunted her until she wept and would not eat.
9. 8JPSAnd Elkanah her husband said unto her: 'Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?'BSBBSB: “Hannah, why are you crying?” her husband Elkanah asked. “Why won’t you eat? Why is your heart so grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”

10. Hannah Prays for a Son

11. 9JPSSo Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk — now Eli the priest sat upon his seat by the door-post of the temple of the LORD;BSBBSB: So after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the doorpost of the temple of the LORD.
12. 10JPSand she was in bitterness of soul — and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.BSBBSB: In her bitter distress, Hannah prayed to the LORD and wept with many tears.
13. 11JPSAnd she vowed a vow, and said: 'O LORD of hosts, if Thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of Thy handmaid, and remember me, and not forget Thy handmaid, but wilt give unto Thy handmaid a man-child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.'BSBBSB: And she made a vow, saying, “O LORD of Hosts, if only You will look upon the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, not forgetting Your maidservant but giving her a son, then I will dedicate him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall ever touch his head.”
14. 12JPSAnd it came to pass, as she prayed long before the LORD, that Eli watched her mouth.BSBBSB: As Hannah kept on praying before the LORD, Eli watched her mouth.
15. 13JPSNow Hannah, she spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice could not be heard; therefore, Eli thought she had been drunken.BSBBSB: Hannah was praying in her heart, and though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard. So Eli thought she was drunk
16. 14JPSAnd Eli said unto her: 'How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.'BSBBSB: and said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put away your wine!”
17. 15JPSAnd Hannah answered and said: 'No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I poured out my soul before the LORD.BSBBSB: “No, my lord,” Hannah replied. “I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have not had any wine or strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the LORD.
18. 16JPSCount not thy handmaid for a wicked woman: for out of the abundance of my complaint and my vexation have I spoken hitherto.'BSBBSB: Do not take your servant for a wicked woman, for all this time I have been praying out of the depth of my anguish and grief.”
19. 17JPSThen Eli answered and said: 'Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant thy petition that thou hast asked of Him.'BSBBSB: “Go in peace,” Eli replied, “and may the God of Israel grant the petition you have asked of Him.”
20. 18JPSAnd she said: 'Let thy servant find favour in thy sight.' So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.BSBBSB: “May your maidservant find favor with you,” said Hannah. Then she went on her way, and she began to eat, and her face was no longer downcast.

21. The Birth of Samuel

22. 19JPSAnd they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah; and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.BSBBSB: The next morning they got up early to bow in worship before the LORD, and then they returned home to Ramah. And Elkanah had relations with his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her.
23. 20JPSAnd it came to pass, when the time was come about, that Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she called his name Samuel: 'because I have asked him of the LORD.'BSBBSB: So in the course of time, Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.”
24. 21JPSAnd the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.BSBBSB: Then Elkanah and all his house went up to make the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to fulfill his vow,
25. 22JPSBut Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband: 'Until the child be weaned, when I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever.'BSBBSB: but Hannah did not go. “After the boy is weaned,” she said to her husband, “I will take him to appear before the LORD and to stay there permanently.”
26. 23JPSAnd Elkanah her husband said unto her: 'Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the LORD establish His word.' So the woman tarried and gave her son suck, until she weaned him.BSBBSB: “Do what you think is best,” her husband Elkanah replied, “and stay here until you have weaned him. Only may the LORD confirm His word.” So Hannah stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him.
27. 24JPSAnd when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of meal, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh; and the child was young.BSBBSB: Once she had weaned him, Hannah took the boy with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. Though the boy was still young, she brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh.
28. 25JPSAnd when the bullock was slain, the child was brought to Eli.BSBBSB: And when they had slaughtered the bull, they brought the boy to Eli.
29. 26JPSAnd she said: 'Oh, my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.BSBBSB: “Please, my lord,” said Hannah, “as surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.
30. 27JPSFor this child I prayed; and the LORD hath granted me my petition which I asked of Him;BSBBSB: I prayed for this boy, and since the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him,
31. 28JPStherefore I also have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he is lent to the LORD.' And he worshipped the LORD there.BSBBSB: I now dedicate the boy to the LORD. For as long as he lives, he is dedicated to the LORD.” So they worshiped the LORD there.
