King James VersionBerean Standard Bible

1. Jesus Our Advocate

2. 1KJVMy little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:BSBBSB: My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
3. 2KJVAnd he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.BSBBSB: He Himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
4. 3KJVAnd hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.BSBBSB: By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him: if we keep His commandments.
5. 4KJVHe that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.BSBBSB: If anyone says, “I know Him,” but does not keep His commandments, he is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
6. 5KJVBut whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.BSBBSB: But if anyone keeps His word, the love of God has been truly perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him:
7. 6KJVHe that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.BSBBSB: Whoever claims to abide in Him must walk as Jesus walked.

8. A New Commandment

9. 7KJVBrethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.BSBBSB: Beloved, I am not writing to you a new commandment, but an old one, which you have had from the beginning. This commandment is the message you have heard.
10. 8KJVAgain, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.BSBBSB: Then again, I am also writing to you a new commandment, which is true in Him and also in you. For the darkness is fading and the true light is already shining.
11. 9KJVHe that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.BSBBSB: If anyone claims to be in the light but hates his brother, he is still in the darkness.
12. 10KJVHe that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.BSBBSB: Whoever loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no cause of stumbling in him.
13. 11KJVBut he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.BSBBSB: But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness. He does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
14. 12KJVI write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.BSBBSB: I am writing to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven through His name.
15. 13KJVI write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.BSBBSB: I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father.
16. 14KJVI have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.BSBBSB: I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

17. Do Not Love the World

18. 15KJVLove not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.BSBBSB: Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
19. 16KJVFor all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.BSBBSB: For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not from the Father but from the world.
20. 17KJVAnd the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.BSBBSB: The world is passing away, along with its desires; but whoever does the will of God remains forever.

21. Beware of Antichrists

22. 18KJVLittle children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.BSBBSB: Children, it is the last hour; and just as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. This is how we know it is the last hour.
23. 19KJVThey went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.BSBBSB: They went out from us, but they did not belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. But their departure made it clear that none of them belonged to us.
24. 20KJVBut ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.BSBBSB: You, however, have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
25. 21KJVI have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.BSBBSB: I have not written to you because you lack knowledge of the truth, but because you have it, and because no lie comes from the truth.
26. 22KJVWho is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.BSBBSB: Who is the liar, if it is not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, who denies the Father and the Son.
27. 23KJVWhosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: but he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.BSBBSB: Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father, but whoever confesses the Son has the Father as well.

28. Remain in Christ

29. 24KJVLet that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.BSBBSB: As for you, let what you have heard from the beginning remain in you. If it does, you will also remain in the Son and in the Father.
30. 25KJVAnd this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.BSBBSB: And this is the promise that He Himself made to us: eternal life.
31. 26KJVThese things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.BSBBSB: I have written these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.
32. 27KJVBut the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.BSBBSB: And as for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But just as His true and genuine anointing teaches you about all things, so remain in Him as you have been taught.
33. 28KJVAnd now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.BSBBSB: And now, little children, remain in Christ, so that when He appears, we may be confident and unashamed before Him at His coming.
34. 29KJVIf ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.BSBBSB: If you know that He is righteous, you also know that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of Him.
