1In dem fünfzehnten Jahr des Kaisertums Kaisers Tiberius, da Pontius Pilatus Landpfleger in Judäa war und Herodes ein Vierfürst in Galiläa und sein Bruder Philippus ein Vierfürst in Ituräa und in der Gegend Trachonitis und Lysanias ein Vierfürst zu Abilene,In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, while Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

2da Hannas und Kaiphas Hohepriester waren: da geschah der Befehl Gottes zu Johannes, des Zacharias Sohn, in der Wüste.during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness.

3Und er kam in alle Gegend um den Jordan und predigte die Taufe der Buße zur Vergebung Sünden,He went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,

4wie geschrieben steht in dem Buch der Reden Jesaja's, des Propheten, der da sagt: “Es ist eine Stimme eines Predigers in der Wüste: Bereitet den Weg des HERRN und macht seine Steige richtig!as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.

5Alle Täler sollen voll werden, und alle Berge und Hügel erniedrigt werden; und was krumm ist, soll richtig werden, und was uneben ist, soll schlichter Weg werden.Every valley shall be filled in, and every mountain and hill made low. The crooked ways shall be made straight, and the rough ways smooth.

6Und alles Fleisch wird den Heiland Gottes sehen.”And all humanity will see God’s salvation.’”

7Da sprach er zu dem Volk, das hinausging, daß sich von ihm Taufen ließe: Ihr Otterngezüchte, wer hat denn euch gewiesen, daß ihr dem zukünftigen Zorn entrinnen werdet?Then John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

8Sehet zu, tut rechtschaffene Früchte der Buße und nehmt euch nicht vor, zu sagen: Wir haben Abraham zum Vater. Denn ich sage euch: Gott kann dem Abraham aus diesen Steinen Kinder erwecken.Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

9Es ist schon die Axt den Bäumen an die Wurzel gelegt; welcher Baum nicht gute Frucht bringt, wird abgehauen und in das Feuer geworfen.The axe lies ready at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10Und das Volk fragte ihn und sprach: Was sollen wir denn tun?The crowds asked him, “What then should we do?”

11Er antwortete aber und sprach zu ihnen: Wer zwei Röcke hat, der gebe dem, der keinen hat; und wer Speise hat, der tue auch also.John replied, “Whoever has two tunics should share with him who has none, and whoever has food should do the same.”

12Es kamen auch die Zöllner, daß sie sich taufen ließen, und sprachen zu ihm: Meister, was sollen denn wir tun?Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

13Er sprach zu ihnen: Fordert nicht mehr, denn gesetzt ist.“Collect no more than you are authorized,” he answered.

14Da fragten ihn auch die Kriegsleute und sprachen: Was sollen denn wir tun? Und er sprach zu ihnen: Tut niemand Gewalt noch Unrecht und laßt euch genügen an eurem Solde.Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” “Do not take money by force or false accusation,” he said. “Be content with your wages.”

15Als aber das Volk im Wahn war und dachten in ihren Herzen von Johannes, ob er vielleicht Christus wäre,The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John could be the Christ.

16antwortete Johannes und sprach zu allen: Ich taufe euch mit Wasser; es kommt aber ein Stärkerer nach mir, dem ich nicht genugsam bin, daß ich die Riemen seiner Schuhe auflöse; der wird euch mit dem heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen.John answered all of them: “I baptize you with water, but One more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

17In seiner Hand ist die Wurfschaufel, und er wird seine Tenne fegen und wird den Weizen in seine Scheuer sammeln, und die Spreu wird er mit dem ewigen Feuer verbrennen.His winnowing fork is in His hand to clear His threshing floor and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

18Und viel anderes mehr ermahnte er das Volk und verkündigte ihnen das Heil.With these and many other exhortations, John proclaimed the good news to the people.

19Herodes aber, der Vierfürst, da er von ihm gestraft ward um der Herodias willen, seines Bruders Weib, und um alles Übels willen, das Herodes tat,But when he rebuked Herod the tetrarch regarding his brother’s wife Herodias and all the evils he had done,

20legte er über das alles Johannes gefangen.Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.

21Und es begab sich, da sich alles Volk taufen ließ und Jesus auch getauft war und betete, daß sich der Himmel auftatWhen all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as He was praying, heaven was opened,

22und der heilige Geist fuhr hernieder in leiblicher Gestalt auf ihn wie eine Taube und eine Stimme kam aus dem Himmel, die sprach: Du bist mein lieber Sohn, an dem ich Wohlgefallen habe.and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in a bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”

23Und Jesus war, da er anfing, ungefähr dreißig Jahre alt, und ward gehalten für einen Sohn Josephs, welcher war ein Sohn Eli's,Jesus Himself was about thirty years old when He began His ministry. He was regarded as the son of Joseph, the son of Heli,

24der war ein Sohn Matthats, der war ein Sohn Levis, der war ein Sohn Melchis, der war ein Sohn Jannas, der war ein Sohn Josephs,the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
