Murdock New Testament (Peshitta)Berean Standard Bible

1. Immorality Rebuked

   (Leviticus 20:10–21; Proverbs 5:1–23)

2. 1MURIn short, it is reported, there is whoredom among you; and such whoredom as is not even named among the heathen, that a son should even take the wife of his father.BSBBSB: It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is intolerable even among pagans: A man has his father’s wife.
3. 2MURAnd ye are inflated, and have not rather sitten down in grief, that he who hath done this deed might be separated from you.BSBBSB: And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have been stricken with grief and have removed from your fellowship the man who did this?
4. 3MURAnd I, while distant from you in body but present with you in spirit, have already, as if present, judged him who perpetrateth this deed;BSBBSB: Although I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit, and I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did this, just as if I were present.
5. 4MURthat ye all assemble together, in the name of our Lord Jesus Messiah, and I with you in spirit, together with the energy of our Lord Jesus Messiah;BSBBSB: When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus and I am with you in spirit, along with the power of the Lord Jesus,
6. 5MURand that ye deliver him over to Satan, for the destruction of the flesh, that in spirit he may have life, in the day of our Lord Jesus Messiah.BSBBSB: hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the Day of the Lord.
7. 6MURYour glorying is not praiseworthy. Know ye not, that a little leaven leaveneth the whole mass?BSBBSB: Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven works through the whole batch of dough?
8. 7MURPurge out from you the old leaven, that ye may be a new mass, as ye are unleavened. For our passover is the Messiah, who was slain for us.BSBBSB: Get rid of the old leaven, that you may be a new unleavened batch, as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
9. 8MURTherefore let us celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, nor with the leaven of wickedness and bitterness, but with the leaven of purity and sanctity.BSBBSB: Therefore let us keep the feast, not with the old bread, leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and of truth.

10. Expel the Immoral Brother

11. 9MURI wrote to you by letter, not to commingle with whoremongers.BSBBSB: I wrote you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people.
12. 10MURBut I say not, with the whoremongers who are in the world, nor speak I of the avaricious, or of the rapacious, or of the idol-worshippers, otherwise ye would be obliged to go out of the world.BSBBSB: I was not including the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.
13. 11MURBut this is what I wrote to you, that ye commingle not, if any one is called a brother, and is a whoremonger, or avaricious, or an idol-worshipper, or a railer, or a drunkard, or rapacious, with him who is such, not even to eat bread.BSBBSB: But now I am writing you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a verbal abuser, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.
14. 12MURFor what business have I to judge them who are without? But those within the body, judge ye,BSBBSB: What business of mine is it to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?
15. 13MURand those without, God judgeth; and remove ye the wickedness from among you.BSBBSB: God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked man from among you.”
